DIY air compressor aftercooler gets dryer air for CHEAP over refrigerated cooler! Painting, plasma cutter, baking soda blasting, or giving tools a longer life this setup has been used for years as one of next best things to an air compressor refrigerated dryer. This has helped me in how to dry air better for cheap on my 60 gallon air compressor. This is a husky/dewalt tank and DIY info to make a homemade aftercooler but works on so many models!
I'm setting up my MINI metal machine shop in a very tight space and need to have everything as tiny as possible to still be able to fit a vehicle in the garage over winter.
mini machine shop: dry air aftercooler for 60 gallon air compressor - this is the DeWalt/Husky/etc air compressor. There ARE small differences between them for setup so please keep that in mind. Video primarily was for helping people to find out how to get the fittings on and a clean look to it.
These are parts I ordered that could be hard to find on your own search. Check that the name I put matches the actual part - I've noticed other videos from a couple years ago link to who knows what parts that did not fit for me. Throw a comment below if they don't look matching I'll try to update over time to help you out.
You do NOT want kinks in your line! Bend SLOWLY! Lube your tools for flaring and bending properly!
*Imperial Tool 370FH Triple Head 180 Degree Tube Bender, 3/16”, 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2”
www.amazon.com/Imperial-Tool-...
Check the size line you need before ordering - this line comes in multiple sizes. I used 1/2" OD size to match the DeWalt 60 gallon air compressor shown in this video
*Allstar ALL40185 1/2" Diameter 25' Aluminum Coiled Tubing Fuel Line
www.amazon.com/Allstar-ALL401...
These little packs vary in price - check around for different prices as they flucuate. Also, you will need to put backings on these so they don't slip through the radiator tubes... basically I'm saying they're not wide enough and make a spacer.
*Fan Mount Kit
www.amazon.com/Upgr8-Universa...
*Derale 15300 Tube and Fin Cooler
www.amazon.com/Derale-15300-T...
*1/2" Heavy Duty Particulate Filter Moisture trap water seperator w/Auto Automatic Drain
www.amazon.com/Particulate-Fi...
You will need a flaring tool. These can be purchased locally or online - search "Flairing tool" and you should get some good results to choose from.
Everything in this video was 1/2" OD measurements. You should be able to get these at any local supplier. I am not putting links because I went through others links and don't know if they changed but did NOT get the right parts. Please search these terms. If you need further help, please throw a comment in below and I'll look to help. :)
I used Brass on:
1/2" OD Compression nut
1/2" OD Compression Sleeve
1/2" OD Flair nut
1/2" OD Flair to 1/2" MIP connector
Yellow PTFE Thread Sealing tape
Ace 1-1/8 in. Tubing Cutter Item no. 45222 | 88-1391A

FYI your pipe cutter with the black handle have a deburring tool built in. On the back of the tool is a black "blade" that flips out like a Swiss army knife and is used to debur pipe after a cut.

Used compression fittings on a 175 psi unit and did none of those ferrule indents on the tube. No leaks and no failures to date. Did not have a flaring tool so rolled the dice and came out perfect. It should be noted that over tightening those compression ferrules RUIN them. Be careful, brass is soft and compressing slightly works just fine. Snug + a bump = perfection.

ONLY you could pull off such a thorough, quirky and entertaining video like this and still remain completely educational. Really awesome, I've been seeing a lot of videos about air compressor explosions so it's nice to see it done safely!

Huge concern for me, safety, for sure. No kinks in lines, high PSI parts, clean to not have as much vibration wear, secured, and SLOW testing on compression step ups. Sourced radiator people have been doing this with for a while as well. :)

Good vid! Liked and Sub'd. I like this approach to adapting the the new hardline to the head on the compressor. I have the husky version and the approach I am taking is drilling and tapping the ports on the head to 1/2" NPT, adapted to 5/8" compression fittings. The a combination of soldered and compression fittings. The radiator I got was the same kind but with the hose barbs, which I cut off and soldered 3/8 to 1/2" adapters. I believe the radiator is called 1/2" but that's OD for tubing, which unfortunately makes the radiator the smallest tube in the system. Also got a bigger check valve. I am also toying with the idea of changing the motor pulley to get more cfm since the head is a bit less restricted.

Great video and I will be using this for a reference when I do the same thing. My only critique is the needle nose pliers. There’s a tool on the back of the pipe cutter for exactly that purpose.

Good tips on this mod, especially liked the DIY "groover" tube cutter! I do have a question about your connections to the Derale cooler, correct me if I'm wrong but aren't those AN or JIC fittings on the cooler? Some weird 37 deg on the flange(45 deg being most common). You seem to have used regular 1/2" flare nuts, aren't those 45 deg? Did I miss something there? Will they need a JIC flare nut and a 37 deg flare on the tube for the cooler end connections? Just trying to figure out what fittings I need to get. Thanks Again GM

What RPM does your pump run at, I’ve got one used and the size of the pulley on the pump and pulley on the motor indicates 2012.5 rpm, that is way too fast, a compressor pump should be around 700-1300 rpm max. Your thoughts?
@JVR_Funwithdesign
@JVR_Funwithdesign 2 года назад
Great explanation. However I'm going to point out a major flaw in your methods and it can lead to some serious issues. 1) the cooler you linked to comes with -8AN (equivalent to a ½" tube size) flare fittings. AN fittings are a 37° flare unlike your typical 45 2) most flare tools that people are going to find in hardware stores make 45
@IzziedeD
@IzziedeD 2 года назад
37° tool is also 10x price
@IzziedeD
@IzziedeD 2 года назад

@m3chanist
@m3chanist 10 месяцев назад
@@IzziedeD it's also an 8° better fit. Only the very edge of the lip will be sealing. A bit of vibration and it will be pissing air.
@IzziedeD
@IzziedeD 10 месяцев назад
@@m3chanist yep, i think a lot of people don't realize there are two styles. i don't have 45° tools or fittings because i don't do any home hvac work. Also, even with a 37° flare, the 45° tub nuts won't support the flare well against the AN8 on the radiator, although it would be better than a 45° flare. I have seen a 37° flare tool on amazon for $20 that looks similar to his, but he'd have to have the AN fittings to support it. I switched from compression to AN everywhere on my compressor (i have the husky version). I took a different approach to the head. Rather than remaking the o-ring groove, i tapped the head 1/2 NPT and threaded 10AN fitting. Now it's 5/8" tubing all around, except the radiator itself. With the price of brass 45° fittings these days, it's not a huge price jump to use all AN on this setup.

I did a mod to mine and it cooled the air great. I do get a air pressure release from the unloader valve for a few seconds I didn't hear before. I assume its holding more pressure in the cooler from the head to the tank and it releasing it. Anyone have that after doing these mods?

This seems like a lot of work and effort when you state that a person "should try to run" another 20 to 45 feet of copper pipe to cool down the air further. Also, what causes installing the manifold directly off the anti-vibration hose to be what you called a "no-no"? Is the "no-no" the hose, or is it that the manifold is too close to the compressor tank? If it is the proximity of the manifold to the compressor - why is this a "no-no"? Or, is it something else? Thanks for sharing your solution to the never ending moisture problem!

Thanks for posting. Instead of making the groove, could you instead take the compression fittings out of the pump and tank, then replace with 1/2 npt to 1/2 flare? That way the whole system is using flared line? Or are those fitting supper hard to remove and that’s why you opted for the groove style compression fitting?
@megoingfast

Very shallow threaded area. Not enough room with the fittings I tried.

I've been needing an air dryer for a long time but I'm cheap so am going to try a air conditioner radiator out of an old wreaked car, they have larger surface area, they are free if you have a few wreaks in the padok and their made to take higher pressure than any standard compressor will put out

Curious if 4kpsi hydraulic hose could be used instead of having to bend and flare all those lines and connects
@megoingfast
@megoingfast 2 года назад
Depends on temperature rating and lifespan. The air can be over 300° F coming out of the compressor. Some types of lines wear over time as they inflate and deflate. It's not a steady pressure. Each time the tank reinflates the lines pressurize and depressurize.

@megoingfast

How is the Derale transmission/oil cooler doing for you as far as keeping water out of the tank.
@megoingfast
@megoingfast 3 года назад
After 10 runs in a row I will see a little water in the tank on a humid day, but the amount of water pouring out of the water trap before the tank is FAR greater. I only 1 time have gotten water from the water trap after the tank. Usually about 3 tblspn water from the tank. I use an extended drain hose and suspect that no water is resting in the tank bottom in operation, only in the hose, but cannot confirm.

Hey the only thing I see is that in my opinion it would work better to route the line into the bottom of the radiator and out of the top for the condensation to settle at the bottom. Just an opinion. Thanks for the video.also where did you get your CNC plasma table?

No, with rads you want the hot inlet to always be on the top.
@PaulThomas-qo9vy
@PaulThomas-qo9vy Год назад
No, Hot air & steam/moisture in at the top. The logic is that gravity & air flow help push out the condensed moisture droplets to the exit at the bottom. The droplets would not travel opposite of airflow & uphill. Will you be installing a cooler on your air compressor? I will soon adapt a new auto air conditioner condenser for my air compressor. Ok, good luck toward drier, cleaner compressed air. I also recommend a UTube channel called THE Compressor Guru with Bud Stiner. Tell him Paul from S. Central Tx sent you! Cheers!
