This video shows how to check Transmission Fluid Level of Accord 2013 , 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 through its 'Transmission fluid check bolt' located under the car just above the transmission fluid drain bolt .. because there is no traditional 'Dip-Stick' to check the transmission fluid level in this Accord!

Honda engineers must have created this 'Transmission fluid check bolt' as a 2-for-1 solution to check fluid level after CVT transmission service and drain the excess fluid to make sure there is just the right amount of transmission fluid in the vehicle.... but it is not easy to get to this 'Check Bolt'
PART NEEDED:
10 mm check bolt washer
Part # 90471-PW7-A00, amzn.to/33POgaT
FREE shipping with Amazon Prime
30-day Free Trial, amzn.to/3rvy0aN
TOOLS & SUPPLIES:
$ 35 Home & Auto Tool set, amzn.to/39VPfbG
$ 30 Jack Stands (3-Ton), amzn.to/3KFBpvA
$ 4 Drain Pan, amzn.to/2XqAzwb
$ 0 Rags or kitchen paper towels
STEP BY STEP PROCESS
* Lift car on jack stands
* Place a drain pan under Transmission fluid drain bolt
* Locate the Transmission Fluid Check Bolt
* It is located above the Transmission fluid drain bolt
* Open & Remove 'check bolt' (12mm) by socket wrench
* Add extra HCF-2 CVT Transmission Fluid to vehicle
* Excess fluid will drip out of the check bolt
* When drip stops, close and tighten the check bolt
* Use new check bolt crush-washer # 90471-PW7-A00
ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
Honda automatic transmission on Accord 2013 - 2017 takes Honda HCF2 fluid which is changed during the preset Honda CVT transmission maintenance interval set on the vehicle's maintenance minder. Whether I do the transmission service at home or get it done at a transmission shop near me, the fluid level has to be at the correct level. Just be sure to not get a transmission flush! Checking transmission fluid Honda Accord is not easy because there is no dip-stick at all. But the method shown in the video is correct in checking Honda transmission fluid level.

Great Video! One observation though. Based on the documentations that I've read, after changing the transmission fluid, you should start the vehicle, press and hold the brake pedal while you move the gear lever through all gears (P,R,N,D,S) holding it for about 3 seconds in each gear. Then you switch it back into Park, turn the vehicle off and check the fluid level at the check bolt.

This is an excellent point! Thanks for bringing it up. A drain & fill doesn't remove fluid in the torque converter but the new fluid has strong detergent properties and therefore important to mix it with the existing fluid and check fluid level at warm/operating temperatures. Thanks so much for your detailed comment and feedback! Best wishes

So in theory you don't need to measure how much you drain out. Just fill until it check bolt starts to leak. This seams like a pretty solid concept.
@FlyBeee
@FlyBeee 2 года назад
Yes, in theory if you are planning to use check bolt to measure the fluid over/under status then don't need to measure the fluid. However, If you are hurry and can't access fluid level check bolt then easy to just measure the fluid that came out and refill with the same quantity.

I was able to open the check bolt from above, no need to jack up. You should note that it is best to check the level while the car is level. Mine had no excess fluid at all; which is why I plan on adding a bit more. I put four litres in and there was no excess which leads me to believe it was under-filled (from previous service/dealer). I should have only needed the 4 litres as Honda states only 3.7 litre required for the drain and fill change. I did have to jack it up to drain as the drain bolt was so tight I needed more space to break the nut loose. Perhaps it is why I need a bit more fluid? Regardless it is important to check and make sure the level is correct for the best life out of the CVT. Great video.
@FlyBeee
@FlyBeee 3 года назад
Thanks so much for your feedback and success at opening the check bolt from above. I will try it out from above the next time I change fluid! :) A flat level surface is definitely important to check fluid level. If drain plug was factory tight it must be really tough to open for the first time but should be easy from here on out. It is easily accessible by laying down in front of the car so no need to lift the vehicle after this first time. Saves ton of time! My drain & fills take no more than 10 mins on all Honda vehicles. You mentioned the fluid is not at top level even after using all 4 quarts of new fluid. How much more did you add after 4qts? Most fluids/oil levels are okay within a high-low range but shouldn't be over-filled especially transmission fluid. Please double-check fluid level at operating temps just to be safe. Best wishes, and thanks again for your detailed feedback!

@@FlyBeee Hey I added about a quarter to a third of another bottle of cvt fluid, ran the engine till warm (10-15 min) and then checked it again, this time almost the same amount I put it came out. It must have been right on the very edge of the check line but I wanted to be safe. I let it drain until it was a slow drop then put the check bolt back. I did this a few days after I posted. Been driving a few 1000 km since then and everything is running perfect.

@Pete3499
@Pete3499 3 года назад
@@FlyBeee I have not, there was no problems with my CVT and the Honda manual did not specifically mention doing it more than once at a time. I have read and seen some people do three with the idea in mind it would flush most of the old fluid out and leave you with mostly new fluid. I don't think it is necessary, so I will not bother with another drain and fill until its recommend. I think I have driven 10,000 km since the change and so far it's running perfect as it should.
@FlyBeee
@FlyBeee 3 года назад
@@Pete3499 The CVT transmission holds little over 8 quarts of fluid, and honda recommends to replace transmission fluid when Maintenance Minder says to do it. Keyword here is 'replace' fluid. One drain and fill replaces less than 4 quarts. Additional drain and fills help to replace the remaining dirty fluid. This model of Accord has a known issue with CVT transmission and Honda issued a TSB about it in mid 2016. Transmissions are expensive to rebuild or replace but fluids are much cheaper in comparison. Whether you do additional drain and fills or not is your decision. Mine is only one perspective and I hope the info I have shared adds to your knowledge base. Best wishes!

Can't I just check the level by substituting the fill cap on top with a makeshift dipstick. Honda getting rid of the dipstick was a stupid idea. Nobody has time for all this crap just to check. Next thing is that they will get rid of oil dipstick as well.
@FlyBeee
@FlyBeee Год назад
Yea, Honda made it more difficult to check fluid level - it was so easy on older models. I have not tried this idea to use makeshift dipstick so not sure if this will work. Other option is to measure how much fluid drained out and then refill with the same quantity, but definitely measure the fluid fluid level of original fluid to be sure you are not over/under filling.

@@FlyBeee ok but what if the transmission was left leaking for a week??? I cracked my oil pan and it was still leaking transmission fluid even at the week mark. What the EXACT capacity for the CVT trans. I’m not talking about the 4 quarts that it comes out and you refill. I’m talking about the EXACT capacity that it takes to refill it back up form zero. Cause I know it ain’t no 4 quartz. I’m having slippage and gear issues when I wasn’t before even after putting 4 quarts of actual OEM genuine Honda oil. Is this because it needs more oil ????

it prefer when fluid is cold, because when we open the drain bolt a decent amount of fluid gets on the hand. If (engine and) fluid is hot it wont be comfortable. Whether you change fluid when it is cold or hot, check the fluid level when the car is at operating temperature.

With the car lifted up and warmed up I opened the check bolt and a little bit drained out . Is that okay that the car is lifted to see if the check bolt is dripping ?
@FlyBeee
@FlyBeee 2 года назад
Fluid levels are considered 'good' while in a range and the reason the dip-stick on fluids has 'high' and 'low' marker and as long as fluid is in that range you are okay. Honda recommends to check level when car is horizontal. One option is to lift both the front and back of vehicle, or, if front of car was lifted to open the check bolt then lower the car to complete the drain. If using jack stands then lift the car on the lowest level of jack stand and close the check bolt when all four tires are on the ground. There is enough ground clearance under vehicle that you can lay in front of vehicle and reach in to open/close and tighten the check bolt - which is what I do this with my Accord.

When I opened the check bolt to check fluid level, it was flowing out slowly for 1.5-2 minutes before slowing to a slow drip lol. Does that mean I initially overfilled the fluid, but then it reached the correct level after the 1.5-2 minutes? The car drives great after the fluid change and no weird shifting or noises from transmission.

@FlyBeee 4 месяца назад
If you opened the check bolt when the car was on horizontal (not lifted from the front) then yes, the fluid level would be correct when no more fluid came out of check bolt.

Hey how often you changed transmission oil on your accord and how much miles you have on it? I have a 2013 too has about 104k miles never changed transmission oil before. Idk whether it is a good idea to change now or leave it as it is.

@@vimo1133 My Accord has 95,450 miles on it at the moment. I changed my transmission fluid at 95,020 miles. Like with your Accord, my Accord's tranny fluid was never changed before 95K miles. From now onwards, I will be changing the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles (i.e. next change due at 125,020 miles). For your Accord at 104K miles, I would personally recommend you change the transmission fluid. Your fluid should still be doing its job well, but is likely starting to get a little tired. After that, I would recommend changing it again every 30K miles (so 134K, 164K, etc. in your case). Also, VERY IMPORTANT, be sure to use Honda Genuine HCF-2 Transmission Fluid, since this is the required fluid for the Accord's CVT!!! Hope this helps and good luck taking care of your Accord!

Did you place the car on 4 jack stands for it to be level?
@FlyBeee
@FlyBeee 2 года назад
Yes for making the video. In actual usage the Honda engineers did a good job to put transmission drain bolt and check bolt where they can be easily accessed when someone lays in front of the car and reaches in. It also saves much time. what i am trying to say is you don't need to put car on jack stands to check the transmission level - it can be done without. I hope it helps.

Check the fluid level when engine is still warm. If you changed the fluid when car is on jack stands, after you drain & fill the fluid start the car and shift it gears, turn it off and then check fluid level. If fluid is changed when car is on ground, after drain and fill take the car for a short ride, come back and check fluid level. I hope this helps. Best wishes!

@FlyBeee
@FlyBeee 2 года назад
I was surprised this Accord does not have a dip-stick to check transmission fluid level - all my other older Hondas had one. My only guess (not confirmed by Honda) is that Honda engineers made this and other changes to reduce vehicle weight to get better fuel economy. This Accord does provide 30- 32 mpg on average so that's a positive, but it is a hassle to check transmission fluid level. If you are doing fluid changes at home look for Jack stands. Walmart and Amazon has 3-Ton jack stands are on sale right now for $30 (typically $50-$80)
