This light comes on because of a leak in the evaporative emission system, usual suspects are the gas cap, and purge valve. If you see this message the first thing you should do is check the gas cap and be sure it's fastened completely. Purchasing a new cap is also an option just to be able to eliminate this as a possibility. At this point even if your check engine light isn't on you will have a code pending. It takes a few drive cycles (periods of driving followed by about 8 hours of inactivity) for the computer to register this code and illuminate the check engine light. If the cap is replaced and a check engine light doesn't come on you should be fine. If the light does come on then the best thing to do is take it to your mechanic and have them run a complete diagnostic before you start throwing more money at it. Most likely it will be the purge valve, which is easily replaced by anyone with the ability to read diagrams and use hand tools, after this point however you could be looking at some major repairs, try to think if you've hit something such as a curb and bottomed the car out, an exhaust leak or damage to the catalytic converter may cause this. Hopefully that answers any questions, and if you really want to play it safe, go to a trusted mechanic that will run the codes and do a proper diagnosis, in the end it will save you the headache of checking all of these items yourself and wasting time and money.
what if you dont get a Trouble code, and you changed the purge valve and charcoal canister and vent valve. he is just erasing the code here, my scanner can do that. it keeps coming back and going away but the car passed inspection because it dont give me no trouble code. I wonder what it can be. I bought a New gas cap from the dealership too.
Catalytic converters will not cause this problem. This is an Evap problem. Most likely, the purge valve could be gas cap, but unlikely, if not the purge valve or gas cap, it's definitely your charcoal canister under the car above the gas tank.
Thank you for this video, which removed the fuel cap code, at least for now. On an older car like my ‘07 Accord, errant codes like this are always popping up but don’t always mean an emergency.
I have that problem every once in a long while, I read the car manual and says to take off cap and put it back on, and that it would take 2 to 3 driving cycles to turn off
That’s actually how it clears itself, last time I simply took my OBD II and cleared it after I got a new cap. Last cap was a good 9 years old, got it from Napa. Just had this messeage pop up again after maybe 2-3 years so probably due for another cap, I’ll probably just wait to see if it clears because I know I always close my cap tight.
You didn’t need to disconnect the battery. All your initial steps were correct (remove cap, screw back on to click, turn car back on). Once you’ve done that, you just need to drive about a quarter mile and it will reset.
It didn't for me. Code came on in the middle of driving. Pulled over into a gas station, checked the cap...off/on/clicked a few times, then drove onto destination. Shut car off there, hoping code would clear upon restart, but it didn't. Made several stops b4 returning home. Code still on. My mechanic is coming to check on it. 🤷🏻♀️

the check engine light will automatically go of when the battery is disconnected, the bigger question is did the light come back on once you put miles on the car??
I replaced my gas cap and purge valve. 2 months later it came back. I feel like it has to be the purge valve again because it shouldnt have been fine for 3 months after replacing if it wasn't a part of the solution
Yeah the TPMS is tire pressure monitoring system and like the previous Edson said check your tire pressure and confirm it’s set to the manufacturers recommended pressure. My 2012 says the pressure needs to be 32psi (you can find it on a sticker in the door jam of your car). If your tires are all at 32 psi and they are still on you have a bad gauge in one of the tires.
TPMS light usually means 1 or more of those sensors need replaced. They dont last forever. You have the option to ignore and manually check your tires periodically like the "old days" or have a tire guy figure out which sensor needs replaced and replace. Not overly expensive if you avoid a dealer.
this does not fix it. I changed my carbon canister, purge valve, vent valve, gas cap and still it wont go away. dont know what it can be. can anyone tell me what it is. i dont get a trouble code on the scanner. it just bothers me to see it, after spending so much money to get rid of it. bout the gas cap at the dealership.
itsSaucyJohn just popped up on me and disconnected the battery for a minute and it worked only thing is you have to enter your stereo code once you plug it back in the stereo cod for my 2011 accord coupe was :32354 hope it helps
