One note about the standard drill bits leaving burrs - if you drill a small pilot hole ahead of time, then the hole with the 13/64 bit will not leave burrs behind. Twice as many presses, but it solves the problem for the more common bit.
@koltoncrane3099
@koltoncrane3099 Год назад
That's actually a great tip all around. I used to just drill once until a coworker said use a small drill first and itll go faster. I'm like no way, but there's some truth to that especially if ya got to drill half inch or bigger holes on thick metal.
@minkusmaz
@minkusmaz Год назад
@@koltoncrane3099 Yes great point, stronger materials and bigger holes make the pilot hole even more important.

What I’ve always done is put the lid on top of the ring, get a decent sized nail and one tap with a hammer for each hole. It goes right through, the only problem is the hole can be almost square shaped. I knew this technique but of course i just bought plastic lids for my mason jars and wanted to try out some of those glad style quart PP5 screw on containers. They were 3 for $2 so no biggie if it’s a loss. I forgot to check for a gasket type seal, but if not I’ll just parafilm it.

Thanks for the great video. I will add one thing on syringe filters. They make them with 4 different filter materials. It is important to get the ones made out of PTFE. They can withstand the temperature of pressure cooking. The other 3 types melt and then the filter cannot breathe.

I agree on using only metal lids. I'm using a hand punch to make the holes, no sharp burrs. A couple of things I'd recommend. Use a wood block under the lid to provide backing. Better yet, make a jig that helps place/locate the lid in position on the drill press. Use a wood block and add a couple of strips of molding on top (glue them down). The two molding strips are placed at right angle so that when the lid is slid in the depth of the hole is quickly located from the edge of the lid. The jig will help speed the hole making process up and yield repeatable hole placement. The jig assembly is clamped down to the drill press table.

Exactly what I have done after a drillbit grabs the metal and starts spinning trying to remove fingers. Definitely use a jig and a piece of wood underneath to drill into .

@@Mossycreekmushroomsofficial hey I just posted something about the self-healing injection ports My post is up top basically you're going to want to look on a Alibaba I gave you the company and their price points anywhere from $0.15 a pop all the way down to a penny a pop but they want a minimum order of 10,000 pieces depending on you're negotiating skills you might be able to actually make a decent deal think about it if they're going to be your main squeeze for these ports and you're ordering like once every every year you might end up just having to bite the bullet and spend 1500 or if you can talk him down to like we'll say 700 for 10,000 pieces you'd be the man it'd be crazy if you fucking talking down to 100 bucks for a 10,000 pieces

Im looking to get into growing mushrooms next month (my uni finals end so I will be free for 6 months), I would really appreciate a video with an overview of all the different stages you go through to end up with mushrooms. The videos I have seen about mycology and lab work are either aimed at actual lab mycologists and waaaay too technical for me to follow, or at absolute beginners and completely prescriptive with the technique without giving any reasoning. Your videos are right in the middle where I can understand what you are doing and your reasoning, thats why I like them so much.

when drilling lids by hand, you can use a brad point for both holes, i find it a lot safer and cleaner running the drill in reverse and at half speed ( play with it and find your prefered speed). I ordered a 1/2 inch "disk cutter" punch from Amazon and was able to get a lot cleaner hole than I could with the drill bit. I got some 9" hole punching pliers for the syringe filter hole. It was designed for punching holes in leather but made a lot cleaner hole than the drill bit also once I got the hang of it.

You sharing all your knowledge is so helpful! So the syringe filter is only for gas exchange? BTW, was a journeyman machinist, and saw a guy have his little finger pulled off his hand, when using gloves for hot chips. Suggestion: Use a non-lid-deforming clamp/block that you can drill right through to make holes in the lids (use scrap wood/plastic/aluminum, etc block to distribute clamp load on lid) clamp multiple lids together, and use a wood/plastic sacrificial block below the lid too, even if you do one at a time. The back-support on the drill breaking through the lid will vastly reduce the lid's hole deformation. If you clamp the block so the drill goes through the same hole, it will also drastically reduce burrs and deformation. The clamp will also mitigate the danger of spinning lids, etc. You should be able to do 50 lids at a time easily. You are the mushroom master for sure, so I'm happy to give you a couple tips, if you're interested. Keep up the great work!

You should never ever wear gloves while that type of equipment. The force of the spindle could grab a hold of the material and rip your fingers off right off. Never wear gloves while using a manual mill, lathe, drill press, CNC, etc. Extremely dangerous.

You make a great point about how cheap lids are. I've been wondering why it seems like such a major sticking point for people, especially beginners. Obviously a newbie will want to start as cheap and simple as possible. But i think it's deeper than that. Lids are such a common item, and we're deeply familiar with how important it is for them to be unmodified. Then to go buy something, just to drill holes in it and make it 'useless' for it's "Typical" purpose, it's just a weird sort of thing to mentally overcome, particularly for people who really hate to waste things. even though it's not wasteful at all if it serves it's purpose to your needs. Combine that with how important a good lid is for growing. Add in all the different opinions and claims. And then throw in how many or few lids you might need to make, and remake, all while your mushrooms are depending on a good lid, it's a weird thing for people! it's a funny thing to watch and experience. The lids really are so stupidly cheap. But for a newbie, having to go out and buy/make 20+ lids that might not even work for you, just to find out you need a different material and more lids to try again, ending up with a pile of garbage lids that can't be used, etcetc, I can see how it would be so daunting! even if in reality they're so so cheap and stupidly helpful in the hobby! and although drilling all those holes can seem like a big project (and it IS), it's also stupidly simple and the time you spend making the lids makes your life so much easier down the road. i'm only just now getting some oysters fruiting, so i'm still fairly new to the hobby, yet i'm struggling with the weird mental side of it all! growing myc really shines a spotlight on your mental state. gives a great way to observe negative patterns or beliefs you might have. i already knew the magic ones were incredible teachers, i guess i just didn't realize that ALL mushrooms were that way! so given all that, i can see why lids become such a weird sticking point for people. a lot of people struggle with the everyday value of things. it's hard for us to truly appreciate it all! you get the cheap-skates who have to let go of the value of pennies (like accepting how stupidly cheap lids are lol!), and you get the loose-pockets who end up respecting the power of a dollar more (realizing how much you can grow for so little, and being able to see how much MORE you could have gotten if you were more money conscious). etc. love it. thanks for all the videos!

Speaking of money and purchasing power if money was backed or redeemable with gold and silver then ya we’d have good purchasing power. Inflation is not low. For some people though it is nice to DIY or have DIY projects not just to save money, but to grow and learn yourself. Honestly I think a lot of channels are making way more money by educating people because then people feel like oh that guy is knowledgeable I’ll buy from them. Even if people make their own lids they’re far more likely to buy LC from mossy creek. North spore does similar things. I watched a girl inoculate logs and was talking how north spore taught her and she bought stuff from them. It’s sort of like freemium. Companies offer free stuff and then people can upgrade or pay money. It’s a great marketing and selling tool.

do you have a particular jar that you would suggest? I can find all sorts of info on the lids, but i've never dealt with mason jars or canning, I have no idea what jar can match with the premade lids. I cant make my own because i dont have to tools, and dont really want to invest in the tools for just one job, so matching the lids to the jar is my main concern.

This is an old video, but I felt I should still mention this. Do not wear gloves while operating the drill press or any other rotating/pulling type function in the metal shop. You are Better off using a clamp or something. We are taught in sheet metal fabrication that major injuries happen when shop equipment snags and sucks in gloved hands, we are taught not to wear gloves when using stuff like this or rollers for example. They may save some regular nicks and cuts, but could one day cause a major injury. use a clamp or vise grips to hold the lids. I really appreciate your content, I have learned a ton from you, thought I would pass on a bit of my knowledge lol.

I digress… ) ...They have measurements on the side so I saved them to use for glasses instead of buying glasses and for measuring when baking or whatever... now I can use them for my mushrooms too! FYI you need Air exchange for freezing because when it expands it will explode the jar if you don’t. Just an improvement to suggest possibly.. is that you could use silicone sealant for your hole at the top and then just stick your needle through it and it will close when you pull it out…?

Just so you know maybe you could use a different affiliate link for the drill press, that’s the only link I can’t get to work.. maybe it’s no longer available.. no biggie just didn’t know if you could substitute so people can still use an affiliate link for you to purchase their drill press. Also could you please share your Amazon syringe filter link or brand.. I can not find a pink kind anywhere on Amazon! I absolutely love your videos, knowledge, and passion to share!

U need air exchange for freezing cause the water expands and if it can't push air out, it could possibly explode the jar and send glass shrapnel all over

I've broke quite a few mason jars freezing bone broth before I invested in proper containers. They dont explode but crack badly. Sad thing is I toss them in woods to thaw then pick up glass but one time a critter found them first and blood was sprinkled all over

Though I get the quality of the injector points over rtv, I'm not understanding the point of the filter disks. One could just drill a hole and cover with micropore tape. Is it simply the issue that the micropore tape could get wet when tilting the jar? That could be the issue with micropore.

There was some testing done a few years ago regarding proper GE when using seryinge filters, ptfe. 22 um like the biomed ones, and they were saying that it restricts GE and micropore/tyvek/ polyfill would be better. Any ideas on that? Did you notice slower colonization times using the filters?

If one of your LC jars can make 40-50 10mL syringes. How long will the self healing injector port(SHIP) last, will it need to be replaced at say 30 uses being poked that many times, or are they good for the entire use of the LC jar and when you make another batch of LC replace it then? Because each time you poke the SHIP you are taking a small chunk of it out.
@benjaminerickson645
@benjaminerickson645 2 года назад
We just make a whole new lid each time we make up a jar of LC. You can reuse the lid a few times, but the injector port should be replaced each time.
