Man, that's a good question. It seems weird to say it, but I honestly don't remember. The thing is, when I try to pull up memories of times when it logically makes sense that I would have felt stressed, like right before my first child was born, I can't actually remember feeling stressed. Like, I know I had to have been, but I can't find the feeling again. So I don't know which actions were the result of feeling stressed. However, I do know that it is very hard for me to put things off. If I'm confronted with a problem that needs solving, I have to do it right now. It's super hard for me to leave it because then it will just consume me. I guess kind of like a beeping alarm clock going off in your house, and you can't find it. It will drive you nuts until you can find it and turn it off. So, I guess that's how I deal with stress. Kind of single-minded obsession 😅. Once I've solved it, the negative feelings dissipate rather quickly I think. To be fair, though, I've been a stay-at-home mom for almost six years, so there's not really a lot of stress in my life at the moment, so I have to go off older memories, which is hard for me.

I remember in one of your earlier videos you had said that old and new memories are at the same "freshness" for you. It seems though different emotions get shelved differently. That's how I feel about old memories. Can't remember some of it no matter how hard I may try. It's very strange though that you don't remember being stressed. @@harshitagupta4384 Honestly, I think I may just not remember emotions at all except for just logically knowing what they are and what the expected emotion in a situation should have been. I recently was a part of a study and had to answer a bunch of questions related to past emotions, and I couldn't do any of the things they asked for. It was a bit surprising for me actually.

Hi, again. Have you viewed my comments in your other videos? I mentioned a Cool memory experiment I did 30 years ago in college about visualizing walking through familiar territory and visualizing or 'putting' objects in certain places to remember them - like a grocery list... visualize your front door and 'put' a gallon of milk there that you can see, then you enter your home and in the living room floor, you 'put' 2 loaves of bread, some pancakes on the couch, and into your bedroom, a carton of eggs on your bed, and a jar of peanut butter in your tub. So when you go shopping, you just casually walk that familiar path in your house to fulfill your grocery list. One note - High contrast makes the memory more memorable - don't 'put' a bottle of shampoo in your tub, not enough contrast to remember, 'put' something in the tub that would Never be found there and it will be easier to remember. This technique should work through concepts as well as visualization techniques - 'put' items in those spots or 'visualize' items in those spots. It would be a fun game of visual hide and seek with your kids and your husband, be creative with this technique and see where it takes you. GOOD LUCK, and Happy times!! And as I tell others, Don't HAVE Nice Days, MAKE NICE DAYS!! Take care, Randy.

A few days ago I became aware that not only can I not form a visual mental image of, say, an apple; I am unable to 'think' of an apple without sighting one. The concept 'apples', yes; an individual apple, not at all. I even tried to 'cheat' by holding an apple out of sight behind my back, but to no avail. I experienced the feeling of roundness, coldness, smoothness, but was completely unable to convert these impressions into thoughts of an actual apple. Can people without aphantasia visualise an object without thinking of that object and vice versa? I hesitate to submit what must seem nonsense, but it is probably important that I do.

Anything I've ever seen and can remember, I can visualize. I'm not sure what you mean "visualize an object without thinking of that object". If it's in the mind, it's thought. Consider it like this question "Can you sing a song out loud without making any sound". The sound is integral to the singing. You can't have one without the other. Do you have an inner voice?

DrDistracto I do not have an inner voice. For me, this may be the most devastating of all, as I now have no recollection whatsoever of my deceased husband's voice after hearing it every day for 50 years. At least I have photographs. re the singer and the song: after the event I have some recollection of the singer, but none whatsoever of the sound of the actual song. Personally, I am unable to sing even 'Happy Birthday' partly because I do not know what the next note will be until I hear it. I have played the same music disc in my car for over 6 years without tiring of it; each listening almost as a new experience. I assumed this was somehow connected to my autistic traits (yes, I am also high on the autistic spectrum), but maybe not. For the record, I also have no memory of taste or smell. These sensations cease more or less immediately on the removal of the stimulus, and I cannot anticipate the taste of even common food items or the next mouthful. Cooking and ordering from a menu present real challenges and many surprises. My reply may not do yours justice, but so much of this does not make sense to me. I appreciate your interest.

Fran, autism often causes anxiety. Do you experience that, and if so, how does it manifest in you? At first blush, it feels like your afantasia is not something that you are comfortable with, Is that true? The words you wrote make it feel more like a prison. I apologize if I have misunderstood.

I think you should definitely do more videos, they’re fascinating! I haven’t read through all of the comments on your videos, so some of these may be a repeat, but if you need some questions...😂 Something like a movie you’ve seen several times, if you know a line or scene from that movie, can you do (even if a poor one) impression? I guess what I’m asking is can you remember audio/verbal/visual memories in your head if you really want to, or is the knowledge in there but not the audio/visual memory? What about seeing a graph while studying for a math or sociology test or something...when recalling the info, cam you call up the graph as well? When you ‘think of’ someone (mom, husband, kids), what is actually in your head? I thought you said something about not really remembering what people (even yourself) look like, and you’re probably not picturing various memories or moments; how would you describe it? Can you remember art? If you ‘recall’ the Mona Lisa, can/do you SEE that in your head? If not, could you still describe it? Sketch it (no judgements on skills, lol)? So much of what I enjoy about art is being able to pull it up in my mind’s eye to see it again - music, too. I pull up songs and listen to them playing in my mind like on the radio; sometimes I sing along out loud, or sing along in my mind, but I still always hear the original as the ‘main track’. Can you pull up music in your head, and is audio different from visual (processing and retrieval) in that regard? Sorry so many weird questions, I have tons! Love your channel, it’s keeping me sane during the quarantine. ❤️

If I watch a movie enough, I can recall lines very easily, but I don't hear them, so I don't think I would be very good at an impression. I might get the pacing or emphasis right, but the actual quality of the voice - probably not. I recognize accents, but I have a hard time replicating them I think. When I try, my husband always laughs and is like, "Was that Italian or Australian?" 🤣 When I think of people, all I have is the concept of them in my head. So if you asked me about my dad, I could tell you his hair and eye color, how much he was balding, etc. But it's all descriptive data that doesn't change much. If you asked me what he was wearing the last time I saw him, I'd have no idea. It was the winter, so I'd logically guess a coat, but I don't know the color or if it was zipped or how think it was 🤷‍♀️. I do know the Mona Lisa, and I would automatically recognize it if I saw it. But I can't tell you if she's facing slightly left, right, or forward. I have no idea what color her dress is. I can't remember if there's a veil on her head. Background color? No idea. Yellow maybe? 😄 And for music, I seem to have absolutely no control over it. I just get earworms. Very irritating! Generally it's the theme songs of children's shows or recently Queen for some reason. I can't manipulate it at all.

I'm stuck in quarantine where I can't leave this room for two weeks. Really glad I discovered your channel as these topics have been on my mind recently and its given me something to think about while I'm here. You're a great speaker and very interesting to listen to. I'd love to hear any of the things you mentioned though i'm particularly interested in what reading is like for you! On another note, I've been researching and experiementing with my own mind recently. I don't really feel like I can picure things in my mind, though I do feel like I can think about things in a visual way, which is difficult to explain and confuses me as to wheather or not I can actually visualise things. Anyway, I was reading this article about an objective test for aphantasia. The idea is that when looking through blue and red 3D glasses at two overlapping words, one in red and one in blue, such that one eye can see the red word and the other eye sees the blue word, the brain picks one word to be dominant over the other, which is the one you will see. People who can think about things visually can supposedly think about the word or colour they wish to see before taking a look, and the one they thought about becomes dominant. I don't have 3D glasses but the following optical illusion came to mind: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2RSsoTJA6cA.html This silhouette of a spinning dancer can be seen to be spinning in either direction depending on how your brian interprets the video. I found that I can think about the dancer spinning in a particular direction, then when I watch the video I see her spinning in the direction I was thinking of! I'm curious to see what other people will find with this and if people with aphantasia could still think about the dancer spinning in a particular direction to the same effect?

I tried, but she only spins to the right for me! 😂 Have you checked out the videos by Aphantasiameow? He wants to run studies with the glasses like you mentioned. I've thought about doing it, but I'm not completely sure yet. Honestly, I'm a bit nervous about learning to visualize, and then getting stuck visualizing terrible things all the time. Sounds like a horror movie, doesn't it? 😄 How about this one? If I ask you to close your eyes and think of the color blue, do you see a color? Is it light blue or dark blue? Or do you just see black?
@j8acob1
@j8acob1 4 года назад
@@quietmindinside4808 Thats interesting! I did find if I watch her spinning for too long I temporarily lose the ability to see her spinning in the other direction, even when I think about it first. I havent heard of him, will check out his channel! Personally I love the idea of having a vivid imagination, though it does sound scary getting stuck seeing horrible things, I imagine it probably works the same way your mind does already. Like I get stuck thinking about horrible things sometimes but most of the time I think about what I want to think about or I can usually distract myself if I need to. I expect if I learnt to visualise more vividly it would be the same. Plus I imagine it's a gradual process so you could dip your toes in the water before diving in! When I close my eyes and think of the colour blue, a light sky blue comes to mind. I don't feel like I can actually see this colour, I just see black, or if I can it's increadibly subtle and faint, but I can think about what shade the colour is and I can mentally traverse different shades and colours in this way without feeling like I can actually "see" the colour, if that makes any sense 😂 This is why it's difficult for me to tell if I can visualise things or not.

I thought of a couple visualization-adjacent questions for you. When the clouds are poofey and have lots of different shapes, do you ever stare at them, to see what recognizable shapes you can find, in them? Have you seen the extreme close-up photos of familiar objects, called Eyeball Benders (Google image search has many examples)? Recognizing what the objects are, depends on your attention to details, and if seeing a bit of an object triggers your mind to recognize or visualize the whole. I think these are two fun exercises that help unconscious visualization to become a conscious skill. Watching you and your husband play with these, might make a fun video.
@quietmindinside4808
@quietmindinside4808 4 года назад
I've gotten the cloud question a few times, and it makes me wonder if there's more to it than I understand. I can look at clouds and recognize that the outline looks like something, like a rabbit or a map of the UK or something, but I just recognize it. Are you guys transforming it or something, too? Like superimposing the imagined image on top or playing with the edges to make it more accurate? I don't know. I just look at them and say, "That looks like a dragon." And that's it. Should there be more? I've done some of those extreme close ups before. I think I'm probably average in being able to tell what they are. But I never imagine the full item after I figure it out! How amazing. I didn't know that was what you were supposed to do. I just recognize it's a part of something and move on. Hmm, maybe I can find a good one and see how my ability compares to my husband's. Really interesting.
@jpopelish
@jpopelish 4 года назад
@@quietmindinside4808 I didn't mean to imply that either of those recreations necessarily involved visualizations, but that they are just good opportunities to have your visual processing engine operating close to consciousness. With clouds, the part I like best, after recognizing some shape, is to just keep watching, as the cloud changes and my visual processor continues work on it. Suddenly, something that was so recognizable, hops to something else, completely different. The cloud is transforming, slowly, and steadily, but the perception makes very sudden jumps. It is all about uncertainty and possibilities, since you are not actually recognizing a real thing. Do you ever see faces in noisy patterns? I see faces, everywhere. I have discovered dozens in the 8 little repeating rectangles of green marble images, in my bathroom vinyl flooring. If there was a way to upload a photo, I could show you cat-frog. My husband make fun of me all the time because when I sing, it sounds nothing like what I want to sing. Not sure if it's just me or not, but when I sing, I'm not hearing the song in my head. If I have a song stuck in my head, and I try to sing it, the one in my head turns off. Usually, that's how I get rid of earworms - I'll start singing, or even just talk to myself about something. I can't hear something in my head the same time that I'm speaking. Not sure if that's unusual or not.

I just hope you'll keep your channel going! :) Here are some things I've been 'word thinking'* about: At your peak of fitness in your life, so far, how athletic/physically coordinated were/are you? What are your experiences with playing musical instruments? If you play, can you make up a tune "off the top of your head"? If legally offered in a safe environment (let's say Johns Hopkins) in order to advance afantasia research, would you be willing to take a hallucinogen? Have you ever had tinnitus and if so, what was your experience? Have you ever read 'Stranger in a Strange Land' by Rober Heinlein? How good are you at remembering names and faces? There are many more questions I'd like to ask, but I would prefer that you screen some of them off-line. Would you be willing to set up a Gmail account just for questions? Just a thought. *Thinking in words, just to differentiate.

I'm not very athletic at all. I could manage gym class in school, but definitely middle of the pack 😄. I actually played the saxophone in school and majored in music in college. I was never good at improv, though. History and theory were my strong suits. For hallucinagins, honestly, probably not. I have a real fear of being out of control of myself, so hallucinagins seem really terrifying to me. What if I'm stuck seeing horrible things, and I can't escape them? If there was a way to turn them off, I would try, but that's just not possible. Tinnitus, nope. And I haven't read that book yet. I'll add it to my list! The reason I asked about athletics was because at higher and higher levels, players are actually trained to envision their moves on the court, on the field or even in the Octogon. They do this physical move or that physical process... and then train their mind to see them doing EXACTLY that in the future, over and over again. And it works to greatly improve both repeatabile abilities and mental assuredness. You said that you were never good at improv. I presume you meant muscially? What about non-improv, would you need sheet music to play, or could you play from rote? If the latter, how much did you have to practice a tune before you could play it with no sheet music? Also, if the latter, there is another completely separate part of the brain that deals with 'habits' that is responsible for this ability. The book, The Power of Habit, deals with some of this. It's been shown (and talked about in part of this book) that people with massive short term memory loss are still able to learn and perform new habits even though their mind cannot learn anything new. I would have to wonder if rote music playing would be able to occur because this other part of the brain acted to make it a habit, but one that isn't even visible to the conscious mind. Since tinnitus could be caused by physical or brain issues, I thought it was a shot. Stranger in a Strange Land is a wonderful book. In part of it, we learn that the lead character is able to give an absolute 100% attention to anything. And when he kisses women, they are overcome, having never been the recipient of anyone's total focus and caring. It just sort of made me think about what some parts of your life are like, since if feels like you can only concentrate on whatever you are actively doing.

@@Netopia40I've heard of all the sports visualizing before, but I figured it just meant "think about", like how I do. Not an actual movie of oneself doing it in one's head. It always seemed like a waste of time to me. Now I know what I was missing 🤣. For improv, yeah, I meant with music. I have no problem reading music, just making stuff up on the fly was hard. I loved playing in jazz bands, but I always played second chair to avoid it. As for memorizing music, I have no problem doing it, but I don't know if it takes me longer to do or not. I played in the matching band in high school, so I had to have quite a few different pieces memorized at a time. It didn't seem like I struggled more than anyone else to do it. I definitely don't think about what I'm playing or hear it in my head, though. It's definitely more like muscle memory. I just do it. Perhaps this is different. I'll definitely check the book out. I've found your videos very helpful. I also have aphantasia in multiple senses. I have a question. When you're listening to someone, do thoughts ever come into your head? When this happens to me, the thoughts are almost always related to what I'm hearing and I sometimes have difficulty not saying what has just come into my head (e.g., a question about the information I'm hearing). Does this ever happen to you? If so, how do you handle this? If you don't verbalize what you've thought, do you later remember it? Do people get annoyed if you interrupt them with a question that has come into your head when they're talking? I find that I have no trouble being interrupted by a relevant question although there are times when I may ask a person to wait until I'm finished with what I'm saying, but it makes me angry when I'm interrupted by an irrelevant question which feels like the other person hasn't been listening. People seem to have different reactions to being interrupted. Some seem to welcome dialogue where others seem to want to be allowed to speak at length without interruption

@@brianblueskies I do apologize, but I haven't gotten to it yet. I'm really sorry about that. I actually started out with another suggestion, "Practicing Mindfulness", and I got a bit frustrated with it. Honestly, it was probably not the best place to start. I have set up a separate Goodreads account to track the suggestions I get here. I'm not sure if it would be easier to discuss the books there or not. (I've only really used that site for book challenges before.) I promise I will get to it ASAP, though. So sorry to keep you waiting.

How 'Connected' do you feel? A video I saw about a guy talking to a doctor about Aphantasia he mentioned his mom died, and with no visual memories of her, he easily disconnected from her and went about his life, whereas his brothers were distraught for a long time with their emotional connection to their visual memories. As for me, I cannot become Fully connected to anything. I live in an apartment complex with about 24 other people and in 6 years, 17 people I know have died - either intentionally or due to severe health issues. When I hear about their deaths, I TRY to bring back times or pictures of them and - Nothing - I feel sad for a few seconds, but I know that they are in a better place without pain or suffering, and then go about the rest of my day. I feel empathy and try to imagine the suffering that they might be going through or have gone through, but cannot make the actual 'connection' to them. So my question is how 'Connected or Disconnected' are you? I love my mom, but cannot 'see' her or 'hear' her voice, until I actually call her or see her and it's like, 'Oh, that's what you look like.' Thanks, Randy A.

Ah, Alex's video! Yes, that was so well done, and his experience definitely resonates with me. I can definitely feel sadness in the moment, but moving on is incredibly easy. That "out of sight, out of mind" thing is really true for me. I did actually have a close friend pass away back in college, and I remember how sad I was at the time, but it's just a fact that I know. When I think of it now, I can't bring that feeling back. I'm not sure if that makes me feel less connected to others or not. I think in the moment, I'm pretty much like everyone else, but it's the memories that I feel more disconnected from I suppose. Have you read the new study about the scary stories? They found that people with Aphantasia don't feel the same feelings of fear when reading scary stories as they do when watching scary movies; whereas, people who can visualize feel the same whether its a story or video. The theory being that it's harder to feel emotions if one doesn't have images to go with it. I think this would relate to how quickly we move on from sad situations, too. Here's a bit about the study, if you're interested! www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/03/210310122434.htm

I'm interested in how you deal with reading fiction. I've always found it incredibly boring to read fiction books and I think my aphantasia might be responsible...
@quietmindinside4808
@quietmindinside4808 4 года назад
Yeah, that seems pretty common. I've only seen one other person with aphantasia mention that they like fiction, so it might be unusual. I definitely need books with more action and dialogue than description. I really get lost when authors go on and on about how things look.

@@quietmindinside4808 Truthfully, as a highly visual thinker... Me too. I get so bored and skim it. I do not care about the countryside from the train window unless it's really about something else. And if it's a metaphor or an insight into the character's mood, I still want a sentence or two and move on.

@@jayy7754 That's interesting. I was having a discussion about descriptive text and visualization, and it seemed to me that highly detailed descriptions would be overkill for someone with extremely vivid visualization abilities. I assumed people with the ability to create very detailed imagery would prefer to fill in pictures with their own ideas. It seems like the extra descriptions would be more useful for those that have a harder time creating visuals on their own. Not sure how accurate that is, though.

"@Fran MacGillivray" & Courtney (any hints on tagging someone?) Would it be ok for our purposes to use the abbreviations AF & F instead of spelling the words out? I'm going to do it on this post and you guys tell me what you think. More thoughts: As I was meditating today, some of the pre-mediation talk was about ruminating, which I don't believe either of you is capable of; more like either of you is cursed with. Ruminating, thinking the same thoughts over and over, be they angry, sad, hurt... rumination is almost always negative. Understand (I think understand is a better word than picture this, or imagine)... understand that this is like rewatching a movie that makes you feel absolutely horrible, over and over. But unlike a movie, instead of getting boring and losing interest, with rumination not only does the interest often block out large swaths of focus, but it's a movie that has it's own hormones. Steadily gaining steam and morphing the memory into something way, way worse than the actual event might have been. We also can experience the reverse. We may be anxious about things we think may happen in the future. Anything from a fear of losing a job, to fear of speaking in public, fear of being an imposter, fear that anything bad may happen. Or when things actually happen for real like combat or abuse. I realized that (I think) neither of you will ever be subjected to that. It's the flip side of an open mind, some times it's open and awake to things we can't control, eg chemical imbalance or runaway anxiety or worry. This is what meditation is all about... to train the mind to be much more like yours. Seeking that silence. Learning to simply 'be' 100% right there in that moment, not thinking about the future or the past, no thinking about smells or sounds or sensations, but just letting them become like white-noise... just unfocused sensation. It is impossible for us to ever achieve. We hope, in time and with daily practice, to get to a place where we can focus on one thing and simply notice thoughts without engaging them... letting them go peacefully like leaves floating down a river. Most of that was to give you context. Because yin/yan, good ruminations do exist too, and I am guessing that you don't experience these either. Most small (Western) children get more and more excited before Christmas and their birthdays. The know what gift they would like and they've made sure that their parents know what they want... and they dream. Every day that passes, more fantasies in the mind of how much fun this toy would be or how romantic having Barbie AND Ken is going to be. Picturing and dreaming about popping a wheelie on that new dirt bike, or imagining all the stuff they are going to create if they get that new art set. Am I correct that neither of you has ever experienced those things? If not, what are events like for you? When you got married, did you have any big hopes for what your wedding would look like? How did you feel leading up to your weddings? Hard for me to picture you being anxious, though I know that Courtney has spoken about her manifested anxiety resulted in her head not feeling right. And what about anxiety for short term stuff. Normally if a typical person suddenly gets a phone call from their boss and is told something like "I need to see you in my office, that's all you need to know", their mind will immediately start focussing on things like "what did I do", "what could I have done", if you have done something in the past you may be thinking how to respond if that's what it's about... the mind can go into mini overdrive until it knows what's actually happening. I'm guessing this is something else you don't have to suffer. That's enough for this dissertation. Thanks again for letting us take this journey alongside you two.

I can still get nervous about things, like what you mention with the boss calling. But I'm not consciously running through scenarios in my head. I might discuss my fears with someone, but inside my own body, I'll just have that nervous feeling in my stomach and feel anxious, but that's it. Rumination like you mention, I can't do either. It may be happening in the background, but I'm certainly not conscious of it. I can think about things after they happen, but I don't dwell on them like that. And it's just a knowing of the overall experience anyway, I can't replay what happened like a movie in my head, so I'm sure it feels less powerful than what happens in a visualizing mind. As for my wedding, I was completely and totally relaxed 😄. My husband and I didn't have a wedding, though. Just went and filled out some paper work 🤣. I've never understood the desire to have a wedding, just not my style. I don't particularly like being the center of attention, and it always seems like weddings are for the guests more than the bride and groom. I just wanted a nice day with my husband 🤷‍♀️.

@@Netopia40 When I was a kid, I got excited about getting presents, but I didn't like about them that way. There would be things I really wanted, but I wouldn't imagine playing with them in my head or anything. I just liked them when I saw them. I might be disappointed if I didn't get what I wanted, like my parents got the wrong Barbie or something, but I got over it. I don't think I hold a lot of attachment for things in general. Maybe because I can't picture them? I never had a favorite anything growing up. All my toys were just things I played with sometimes.
