I got my hands on a couple of old Cisco routers from my good friend Michael Chenot. Join me as I take a look at the hardware of both models and upgrade the IOS version on one of them.

Thank you for this video. I am learning as an IT technician in Germany and I would like to start getting into cisco. What about licences on these old devices? Are they included if I buy one i.e off of ebay or do I still need to buy them seperatly even if the device is EOL or EOS and I just want to play around with it like you did.

Enjoyed watching this video, just beginning to learn some Cisco networking, planning to setup a VLAN using a Cisco Catalyst 1000 switch which is probably much easier with its web-based interface for setup, but I am curious about the CLI. Maybe someday I will switch to a Cisco router if I find that it is more secure than commercial routers. Subscribed

Thank you. question you state USBFlash is indicated inserted but I see you do not have USBFlash drive actually inserted in the back of that 1921 router. Is USBFLash a term used for 'bootflash or flash" memory?

Screen is what you can use in Linux to connect to the console port. You will need sudo privilages.

You should always read release notes for your upgrades. Cisco made people learn that the hard way with nexus 3000 upgrade that bricked the device unless you followed a specific upgrade path. Of course this was hidden deep in the notes.
@jfbeam
@jfbeam 27 дней назад
Actually, it wasn't buried at all. People are just stupid and blind. It's in the release notes, upgrade guide, even the g.. d... user guide. Anything newer than 3mil year old IOS is more complicated than simply placing the dot-bin in flash and point the boot load at it. I can't count the number of times people have screwed up their device not knowing how to _install_ new software. People like that are too dumb to walk through the 87 step process to restore it. (send it back, or buy me a plane ticket) And it's not just Cisco hardware like this.

I bought myself a Cisco ISR 1921SEC-K9 for a very ridiculous price (less than $ 40), because it is password protected and the new owners could not understand what to do with it and why it is not TP-Link))) What is a console - they have no idea. They say that a working router was sold to them, but it turns out to be static at the entrance. And they needed a DHCP client. ))) Chased the brand without understanding what to do with it in case of setting. And the WEB interface was turned off. I am very pleased with the functionality, considering that this is a model with the maximum number of licenses.

11:26 Though, they are both technically flash memory, on most Cisco devices, flash card/flash memory/flash storage is where the IOS image is stored. On the other hard, the running-config is stored in NVRAM. The significance here is that, you can swap out the flash card (IOS image) but the NVRAM (startup-config) stays on the router.
@jfbeam
@jfbeam 27 дней назад
NVRAM is sometimes "flash emulated". Normally it's part of the RTC memory.

Can you make a vid on the type of softwares or apps you use common day to day. Like for example random stuff like video editor software, OBS, spotify, discord, idk whatever. Do you use any ingegrated development environments? I used to be pretty tech oriented but im pretty out of date with computer stuff.and im looking for new things to download and use for fun or for real life stuff.

A router allows you to interact with more than 1 IP adress for Internet Communication. Other Internet End devices from a Internetprovider does not allows you to setup on this Device more tha 1 end IP adress. With a Router from Cisco in Sample, you can using 4 WAN Devices with 4 IP adresses with 4 different Local area networks. You are more flexible than a Fritzbox or a Cablemodem (SAGEM as sample). I know that, but the word Router is definition in the IT and a Cable Modem is a definition. Most devices (Fritzbox as sample too) are allowing only static routes. you can transfer 100 different networks to one ip. With cisco Routers you can seperate the network completely from the other. No user will be able to switch from on to another Network. You habe several different protokolls that you can use to secure the network in Layerrsecurity.

If it has USB, it isn't that old. Also, having 19 inch racks are an old AT&T standard.
@jfbeam

Even Cisco x7xx's had USB... couldn't use them, but it physically has them. So did the million year old Pix!

ya have made youreself 2x door stops
@jfbeam
@jfbeam 27 дней назад
They were pretty much door stops to begin with. That's why the original owners retired them from service. The 1900 could still be used for labs, vpn access, etc. but it's throughput is rather low for modern (gigabit) networks. I still use a 2851, which limits me to about 20% of my available bandwidth, but it still fast enough for just me.

cisco is kinda falling behind cause people are switching from cisco to ubiquiti and pfsense stuff like that and i have worked with cisco products and it was a pain in the butt compared to ubiquiti and pfsense in some country's they still use cisco like india and Switzerland and many more and some isp still use cisco but most are moving on to a diffrent brand. 7 years ago i saw cisco a lot in but it has changed sadly 😪
@NerdOnTheStreet
@NerdOnTheStreet 3 года назад
Cisco has some strong competitors, but there are still plenty of large enterprises using them. Saying they're "falling behind" is kind of like saying Microsoft is falling behind in operating systems: there may be better alternatives (depending on the application and the level of support required), but they're an established leader in the field and are not going anywhere.

I laughed when he picked up the 1821 and then said "anyway this is what the back of the device looks like" hahaha. Such an amateur.

Just depends which way your rack is pointing 😉. I said as much in the video. Also, the day job I had involved programming the devices. We had other people to walk to them and move cables around for us (which I also mentioned in the video).

Serial/Console is NOT ANALOG!!
@NerdOnTheStreet
@NerdOnTheStreet 5 лет назад
Fair enough-- it's digital. Still antiquated as crap, but it doesn't fit the definition of "analog." It uses 1's and 0's, and there are no "in between" values for console signals. (As shown in the video, though, they are prone to errors that you don't see on better types of cables.)
