I call the air poppers garbage. They don't work very well, and a more traditional method (other than microwave/prepackaged) tastes better and isn't much more unhealthy.

I've always called it a popcorn hair dryer. I still have the one my parents used when I was five, it's forty years old still works perfectly. In the last 10 years I've owned my house I've replaced the microwave the dishwasher and the fridge. I wish my "real" appliances lasted anywhere near as long as my popcorn maker. Other than the fact it has a little removable cup on top for melting butter that always comes off. Without it it will shoot straight out of the top like a popcorn fountian.

Growing up, my mom always had an air popper. It was great -- popcorn whenever we watched showed on TV. An air popper WILL throw some unpopped kernels in the bowl sometimes, but not too many. You can then decide if you want salt and butter or not. I've got so many good memories surrounding popcorn from an air popper.... Glad you guys enjoyed it.

one thing that i prefer about other "gadget" reviews is that they mention that some of these gadgets could be used for persons with difficulty doing certain task. I find its useful to mention that. As far as the salad cutter, yeah its not gonna be great for someone who has full motor control and had good knife skills. But for someone older it might help. the other two were cool. Ive got one of the air poppers at home (different brand) and its great if i want to mix in flavors as i dont have to worry about anything already coating the popcorn. If i didnt already have a scale at home, the scale/measuring thing, id totally get one.

Added to their autism, they have very severe learning disabilities and most have other challenges such as cerebral palsy, Sturge-Weber Syndrome and other conditions which make their motor skills and grip suffer. I try to get them involved in a weekly cooking session and something like that salad bowl in different sizes would greatly help them for chopping just about anything if it were the right size.

In order to be worth the space, a single-use kitchen appliance or tool has to make its assigned task much, much easier than it otherwise would be, and an air popper definitely qualifies--it's one of the very few single-use kitchen appliances I own. No mess, no greasy dishes, no worrying about improper cooking, you don't even have to pay attention to it. Just give it the right size of bowl to feed and you can basically forget it until it's done. I didn't actually know you could make popcorn in a pan until I was an adult, and my immediate reaction was "Why would you ever do that?"

The Air Popcorn makers are really useful if you get a decent one. My family had one for about 20-something years(some of those years were before my time) and finally had to get rid of it in the late 2000s. The thing lasted for over 30 years and made thousands of bowls of popcorn that you don't need to watch to make sure it is done properly...10/10 would recommend even if you rarely eat popcorn.

My grandmother had an electric popcorn maker when I was growing up in the late 80s. When I got married 14 years ago, I got one as a wedding present and all of my kids still use it. I gather from watching this video that these were much more prevalent in the US than the UK. We just bought an electric kettle last year though. We thought it might be another appliance that would just take up room on our counter, but we quickly realized how useful it is. We now use it several times a day. I also just recently started using a kitchen scale in order to make recipes from British cookbooks. That plastic salad thingy though, completely useless. I feel like the salad cutter would be really good for young kids learning to cook. Keeps them safe and teaches them out knives and cutting ect.

I'm a 90s child so there was a brief moment in my childhood where they were a 'thing' here (like lava lamps and other 'thing's), specifically this one: amzn.to/2E4E1Ve.

My family has had one for about ten years too- it works great! Plus you can put butter in the little cup on the top and heat it up

I have one, but I don't use it. I can't get the salt to stick to popcorn without oil and without salt, it's really not worth it.

They've been around forever, I remember my Grandmother had one in the late 70's early 80's, my parents had one when I was in middle school and it only died around 10 years ago.

Four-eye moriarity is right, the ability to mix things while replacing lost water/alcohol on a scale is both a rare need but incredibly useful and being able to chain add ingredients just by watching the meter is great.

I had an older version of that popcorn maker as a kid. I always had fun looking into top and watching the popcorn come up. It was a sad day when it finally broke. It was even sadder when my dad tried to cook popcorn in a pan for the first time in years and started movie night with a visit from the fire department.

I make microwave popcorn in a paper bag. Although I still get unpopped kernels, I can pour a little good olive oil over the corn, salt, and eat out of the bag. Best thing - nothing to wash. My kitchen is too small for single-use gadgets. How about some kitchen organizing help?

I actually got one if those hot air popcorn makers for my birthday earlier this year, and it's genuinly fantastic. It's by Phillips and just a bit smaller I think. But it's just so easy to make popcorn now, just put the corn in it and turn it on. And afterwards you only have to wipe it a bit since you don't use any oil! Hands down one of the best kitchen devices I got in the last few years. Absolutely recommend it, even if you don't make popcorn often!

I have a popcorn popper like this but older... Like from the late 80s/early 90s. It's a "Hamilton Beach PopcornNow Plus Gourmet/regular air popper" it has the advantage of having a small cup that suits on the top for measuring the kernels and for melting butter while the corn pops.

The popcorn maker is so useful! If you are someone like me who is allergic to the oil that most manufacturers use to make microwave or movie popcorn. Air popping is the only way I can enjoy popcorn. Thanks boys for adding to Christmas shopping list.

Air poppers don't fall into the kitchen gadget category IMO. They've been around forever, tons of companies make them and they're pretty common... atleast in the US. To me, kitchen gadgets are gimmicky, questionably useful and not established items made by many companies.
@drakenfolk
@drakenfolk 5 лет назад
you said it. "At least in the US". They are more of a gadget in the UK i think, or in germany where I am from. They fall exactly in the category you mentioned in the last sentence. :) I don't know one person who owns such a thing. They are not well established in europe I guess.

I have literally never heard of that thing before and I do not know anyone at all who owns any device to make popcorn in other than a microwave or, as a matter of fact, would aspire to do own one. It seems to depend on where you live wether some things are well established or a novelty gadget. 😅
