I'm experimenting with muriatic acid for removing gemstones from matrix - focusing on Herkimer diamonds this time. I will post a follow-up video in a few weeks.
This video was inspired by a discussion with one of our viewers, Lizzy Moore. Thanks for getting me started on this little science project.
I've used muriatic acid to clean tiny bits of matrix before, but never anything of this magnitude.
Please be exceptionally cautious if you try this - acid is very dangerous. Wear gloves, eye protection, a face shield, apron etc.
Also, dispose of your acid responsibly. Don't pour it down the drain. Find a disposal / recycler BEFORE you begin. My town accepts it during a semiannual hazardous waste collection day at our transfer station.
I hope you enjoy. Please comment, like and subscribe

Thanks so much for the shout out! Loving the video and the crystals came out so clean. I like the way the remaining crystals look in the matrix too. I believe you can use baking soda to neutralize the acid when your finished so it can be safely disposed of. I do like the idea of using the acid strips also, then you know for certain. Keeping an eye out for your next video. Oh yes, loved the garnet and emerald also. 😊

No problem, just giving credit where it's due. You are correct: baking soda will neutralize the left-over acid; add it slowly in case the reaction is strong at first. As soon as the rock samples "look interesting" I'll be certain top make a follow-up. Hopefully in 2 weeks

Just before I watched this I finally succeeded in cleaning crystal that I couldn't get clean with anything else iront out /bleach/vinegar. Muriatic was drastically effective. Very pleased . I used the non green label. I was. So frustrated I baught the one that says it's less safe lol. It worked . And it only took 2 hours . The failed methods I wasted weeks on...

I'm glad to hear it! It's cleaned a few tough ones for me as well. It doesn't work on all types of rock, but it's a good thing to try when all else fails

Wow awesome video! My son found some tourmaline embedded in a big quartz rock. Would this method help us extract the tourmaline or do you suggest a better way?

Unfortunately I don't think it would work. The Herkimer diamonds are water clear quartz, and it won't dissolve with the muriatic acid

Can you help tell me what kind of stone i have? Its hard to explain but it has around 10 rectangle see through green stones and what looks to be gold to me but who knows and clear crystals as well like some kind of quartz and some dark orange and in 2 spots its magnetic. Ive taken pictures and tried searching on google but many different options pop up that dont look like it. Its also not fully cleaned because i dont know how lol

In your video you said you were removing calcite from the crystals. Is that the white doll coding that I saw in clumps? I’ve collected a lot of crystal from southern Missouri and I’ve soaked them in warm oxalic acid for a couple hours Which removed most of the iron stain. However it is left a dull white coating in places and I can’t find anything to get rid of it. I’ve not tried muriatic acid yet - wonder if that’s the trick Any ideas?

What types of crystal? quartz? Is it found in hard rock or soil? If it's from soil the cloudiness might be erosion / weathering? And FYI: since this video was made I believe it's not calcite but perhaps dolomite crystals I was dissolving with the acid If you want to email a few photos at OakKnobFarmNH@gmail.com I'll let you know what I think!

i havent ever had a high velocity buffing tool like jewlers have , but i do have a belt sander . i bought a high grit belt and wore it down until it was a high velocity spinning piece of denim . that buffs stones like nobodies buisiness . taped the trigger down since no deadman switch and just flipped it upside down . the rocks get hot but , wow for results .

Colored Chalcedony or Agate is actually more valuable than white, and more sought after. Why do you want to remove the coloration?

How do you clean topaz stones after excuvating from the mountain. We just did some searching on mountain common in Utah for red barrels stones and topaz but we only found topaz this time and Hoping to find way to clean them on our own
@OakKnobFarm
@OakKnobFarm 4 года назад
It's really going to depend on what type of stone you're trying to remove from the topaz. I don't think acid will etch the topaz itself (never tried, however, so sample on a small shard) It will be much slower, but you can experiment with long soaks in vinegar, too. That's a much weaker acid.

How do you dispose of the acid safely? I just want to be careful since i do own 3 animals as well before i start to clean off some of my rocks.
@OakKnobFarm
@OakKnobFarm 4 года назад
I neutralize it fully by dumping it an a bucket of old nails, and waiting until the pH rises to near neutral, then dilute and dump in the drain.

Hello. I was wondering if it's safe to pour this stuff in a plastic bowl to clean my crystals. I've never used acid to clean my crystals. Where do you dump the acid after you used it?
@OakKnobFarm
@OakKnobFarm 3 года назад
Yes, plastic is acid safe. After my acid is used I throw a junk scrap of iron in it ( a few old nails, or lids from soup cans) and let any remaining acid etch the steel and basically burn it self out (it basically becomes non-acidic). Then I save in a sealed plastic jug and dispose of it at my transfer station on hazardous waste collection day.

I've never tried it on limestone, but I think it should work. You can try vinegar at first (it will be far slower) to test

Can u use muriatic acid to remove perlite from obsidian
@OakKnobFarm
@OakKnobFarm 3 года назад
I've never had perlite to remove before - but since obsidian is basically a glass I don't think it will get harmed. I personally would give it a try on a small piece. Or you could start with vinegar (much slower) and see if anything starts dissolving

it is dilute hydrochloric acid. You buy it in the masonry section of the hardware store. it's used to rinse mortar off of brick, etc in construction, usually.

I have honestly never had that happen before! there must be something about your host rock / matrix that is causing it, assuming it's not from the container melting or something.
