Chemically removing the paint and rust off this 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS.
Step1- alkaline hot tank for paint removal and degreasing
Step2- Food Grade acid bath to remove rust
Step3- apply a water based rust inhibitor
This whole process takes about 4weeks.
I had this video longer with me explaining more but I edited a lot of it out because it ended up being very long. Let me know if you guys would like longer more informative videos.

I did that to a 57 Chevrolet one time. Car looked great for a while. There was no way to get good primer and paint coverage back on enclosed areas. Even ones cut open, peeled paint rewelding them. I pray that old 57 hasn't completely rusted away by now. If a shop could paint dip the car after this, that might be the best way. Ya'll Take Care and have a good plan before you take everything off the metal...
@bobber5534

I was kind of thinking the same thing. After all the dips and cleaning, dip it in primer. At least all the voids would be coated with something.
@karlmiller7500
@karlmiller7500 Год назад
I'm no expert, but I have heard that chemical dipping can cause future corrosion from folded seams that are spot welded, because the chemical gets in and stays in, makes sense to me. And yes how do you possibly spray Prime hidden surfaces, it would have to be dipped in something good.
@bobber5534
@bobber5534 Год назад
@@karlmiller7500 yes, what you're saying makes sense about spot welded and folded seams. For a primer to have half a chance to seep into seams, it would have to be water thin.

That is exactly why I will never dip a car. I’ve been doing restorations for over 40 years. I will never disturb the hidden factory coatings and if I do repair on a area that is inaccessible, after a repair, I will inject Fluid Film in that area. My customer clientele keeps their vehicles forever and have never had any repeat rust issues.

I was told by a hot rod builder that the problem with “acid dipped” cars is that the seams between the metal panel’s joints will become exposed leaving chemicals to leach out and rust later. I had a 69 Charger R/T that underwent a chemical dip and rotisserie resto 15 years prior and it had some rust growing in the door sill and cowl.
@JohnDoe-pv2iu

My 57 Chevy was a big pain. I eventually overthinned some black rustoleum paint and used a pump up sprayer to try to 'flush' a paint/mineral spirits 'coating' into everything. If I had known to do this immediately after I got the car back, I probably wouldn't have had as much trouble. Like I posted above, make a complete painting 'Game Plan' for EVERY part of the steel before you have it dipped and then start coating everything with paint and primer immediately! Ya'll Take Care and be safe, John

I have heard this is the better and cheaper option that keeps most of the car intact, and protected. Cost would run $2,500-5,000 range. Someone on RU-vid runs a shop and talks about this. It is affordable for those wanting to restore. They do all of the removed parts also just in a separate bath. Process takes 2-7 weeks depending on the work being done and how many baths the car needs. That’s what I have learned recently, I could be off slightly on some numbers but I hope that helps
@FordRangerClassics
@FordRangerClassics Год назад
@@letscheckitout1985 I think you VASTLY underestimate how much it costs to build a vehicle and how cheap this is. Obviously it's not for the "next paycheck or my kids have to sleep at their friend's house because we'll be homeless" type, but it's worth it of you have an old car worth saving. Way cheaper than a whole new vehicle (if that's your thing)

the acid baths could be creating a iron phosphate on the metals surface. We had a 5 stage wash line prior to powder paint and the alkaline bath cleaned the parts and the acid bath created an iron phosphate coating to protect against flash rust prior to applying the powder paint.

I enjoyed your video. I have learned that the steel the manufacturer bought to make their cars is really important. For Example, Fiat corp bought Alfa Romeo and used cheap Russian steel to make both brands. Total rust buckets.Then GM had the Idea for Saturn to use thin sheet steel and build lower body rail by laminating 4 or 5 sheets together then forming the rockers! Salt water would eat these up. I actually could use a long nose plier to roll back rusted metal outer layers just as you would open a sardine can. My '80s MB had pretty good metal.
