Bobby Fischer, about 2 years shy of becoming World Chess Champion, had a dominating performance at the Buenos Aires Tournament of 1970. Fischer's round 8 game against Argentina's Oscar Panno reminded me of one of Fischer's quotes: "Tactics flow from a superior position." Play follows in typical King's Indian Attack fashion with white playing on the kingside, and black playing on the queenside. An open file or two on the queenside often denotes progress for the 2nd player. This game acts as a nice example of how one can still pursue a kingside attack despite an open line on the queenside. Fischer plays simply, logically, and his pieces just seem to fall on wonderful squares. Then, when Fischer's pieces amass in proximity to the black king, Panno gets hit with a bolt from the blue!

I've been playing the KIA for the last few weeks and done well with it. Afaict there are no tricks or traps in the opening to look out for, or at least no one has tried any on me... its a 'long play' type of opening, which I prefer anyway, lol. The white bishop is hemmed in for a little while but I like to open the center at a time of my choosing and use it to attack and play on the queenside.

Thanks. A great game by Bobby Fischer. 1970 was a defining year for him. He won everything in sight. Yet, he was a difficult person, he refused to bow to FIDE's rules, and it took Pal Benko's voluntarily vacating his US spot in the 1970 candidates' tournament for Fischer to get the chance to play in the 1972 world championship. Let's not forget Benko's unselfish gesture. Without it, Fischer would not have become world champion. Benko understood Fischer's unique talent, and he sacrificed his own opportunity in order to support Bobby's superior chance for the world championship. Thank you Pal.

Yes, if you can see them. I considered Be4 (having been told there was a combination there, which of course makes it easier) but I couldn't calculate through to the end and would never dared to play it.

I’ve heard it said that the King’s Indian Attack does not work well vs Black’s Kingside fianchetto, but (judging by this game) clearly the attack does work well if White has a pawn entrenched on e5. Very strange Panno didn’t snap off White’s Knight on e2 when he had the chance. In any case, Fischer’s brilliant Be4!! is the star move of the game, highly instructive & frankly an unforgettable tactical shot. Thank you for sharing this little-known but highly instructive gem of a game.

There is a potential counter-offensive here for Blacks. h6, then g5 followed by Ng6 and then undermine White pawns at e5 and d4. As these white pawns described by Jerry remained unchanged during the whole match. So the strategy here which is CRUCIAL, it is about to crumble these 2 white PAWNS (14:48) (d4&e5) which are pivotal in Fischer's attack. The counter-offensive idea here is to promote Black d5 and e6 to d4 & e5 (by placing both knights to attack e5 square) so once this takes places then the roles have been reversed. But all these (my nonsense haha!!) is in hindsight and Fischer like many times before demonstrated here that is it is all about SUPERIOR positioning and IT IS ALL ABOUT PAWNS to support the other minor pieces. Brilliant Jerry and thank you from Down-under :))

I never understand people saying "Why do they resign? They should accept checkmate." Are you kidding? If you're playing in a tournament and a man or woman reaches across to shake your hand saying they resign, you accept it without any unhappiness. They see it, you see it. End of story. There's no need for this masturbatory checkmate to happen. Sorry if you as the viewer don't get to really see it out, but get over it. The game is over, and high level players know it when they see it. That's honor enough, to know that you've won.

There are 2 main apps to play this game. KGS go and Panda go. I use KGS. If you want we can meet on this one and I can briefly explain it.

Hey Jerry would you be willing to cover Tal vs Hjartarson 1987? I think it's one of the most fascinating games I've seen and there is no good coverage of it! Hey Jerry! I just want to thank you for uploading these videos, especially your beginner to master series videos in order to help new chess players get better. If you had time to follow up on this question i would greatly appreciate it. I am just wondering what you feel the best way for a new player to get better is. I've watched pretty much all your videos in that learner's playlist and i play quite frequently, every day that is. I just started getting into chess heavily and trying to get better probably two weeks ago. Would it be beneficial to just play as much as possible, or do you think certain learning devices such as tactics, online lessons etc would be more beneficial than just playing for a beginner? Your suggestions would be awesome! Thank you.

i feel like i had the most improvement when i started doing tactic puzzles frequently, after some time you recognize some patterns for the tactics, especially on a beginners level it can win u a lot of games no matter how good or bad your positional/strategic play is.

8.33: What a force on the kingside. I would actually, as black, have traded the bishop for the knight a move earlier, but then again, I am one of the few who values knights higher than bishops, Also, I don't have as strong opponents as Oscar Panno ;D

Interesting, I had a similar Be4 move in a blitz game earlier today, but to exploit a pin on the Queen on e7 (which also matches the black Queen's square here). However, I was too enamored with the crazy Nf5 move, trying to "make it work."

I don't particularly understand Black's decision to resign just one move before mate. You may as well play the final move; resigning just one move before mate seems to do nothing but suggest that you took that long to actually realise you were lost. Nonetheless a brilliant game by Fischer. Definitely going to try play the KIA having seen this game (and some of his others).
