This is the live version of Inside Out, recorded in Berlin in 1990. This version mainly shows the American drummer Chester Thompson playing on this amazing performance. Enjoy!
@@danielperreault2612 exactly Chester said it was really complicated music with Zappa and they would rehearse for hours. You had to be at the top of your game.
Mr. Chester Thompson is a sensational, dynamic, supremely talented, mesmerizing, lazer focused man on his craft, and is one of the best drummers I've ever heard. Bar none!! Respect always Mr. Thompson!!
I love how Chester always has that "I sure hope I don't get fired from this gig!" look on his face. A true professional through and through. A really nice guy too.
I have such a man crush on Chester Thompson. I have since the early 1980s as a fan of Genesis and Phil Collins. What a consummate drummer. I saw this tour in Sacramento at Arco Arena in September of 1990.
The year is 2021, this concert was recorded in 1990...The music world and live performances today are light years from what they were, i watch this particular performance again after years with pure wonderment. Kids that have any love for music should see this, real musicians playing instruments to the best of their ability. From 4:13 while you watch Chester destroy the drums and lock you into a trance spare an ear for Daryl (Genesis 'Live' Guitarist) absolutely smash the solo accompanied by the heaven suppported bass playing and keyboards and not forgetting Phil and the backup vocals sounding identical to the studio recording of this track. Its actually ridiculous how fantastic this show was and more so how good this track was performed 100% live.
Chester is rock solid. He's like a metronome. He drives the band from his deliberate, rhythmic, no frills drumming style. Being a fabulous drummer is about doing the basics extremely well and augmenting them with little flashes of creative brilliance. Chester is rock solid. Fabulous drummer.
Inside Out remains one of my all time favourite tracks. Chester is an awesome drummer, had the pleasure of seeing him play double drums with Phil on many occasions over the years.
Today's drummers could learn a lesson from Chester here. No drumming gymnastics. No endless stick flips. No nonsense. Just solid, unyielding groove. perfect timing and fills where they should be placed. Playing for the song
yep absolutely mate, I've seen Chester play many times and he rarely makes a mistake, complete reliable professional consistency, which is why he played with PC and Genesis for 30 years.
KEITH MOON (WITH THE BEST DRUMMING GYNNASTICS) OF THE WHO WOULD ABSOLUTELY SMOKE CHESTER THOMPSON......BUT I WILL NEVER GET SEEING GENESIS IN 1982 WITH CHESTER THOMPSON!!!!!!!!!!!!! TRULY AMAZING AND UNFORGETABLE!!!!!!!
His heart, soul and consistency towards the music is so incredible and awesome. That’s why he is and always be my drum hero. God bless you Chester Thompson.
Chester is a consummate gentleman. I met in at a clinic many years ago in Ft. Worth. He was so quiet and humble. Upon hearing so much early Zappa with Chester, then into Genesis, it seemed he fit this band so well that its almost unnoticed live. That fill at 4:00-:04 is so clean pocket and cool, it can only be felt. I love this kind of drumming! A true American treasure.
Jesus, the discipline . Amazing . He is not underrated , he is simply the best drummer ever. My God. Young up and coming drummers, watch and learn. 👍👌😎 Chester.
Much respect to Mr Thompson on drums. I'm a drummer myself, but haven't picked up the sticks in a few years(67yo now). He's always been good, none of the fancy stuff, just plain good..
A few years ago, I won tickets to see Genesis for their Turn It On Again tour in Denver. Chester Thompson & Phil Collins BOTH are the real deal. It's AMAZING to see these guys live.
Chester is a machine with soul. Such a great groove and sound. And just kills it everytime. Get him with Leland Skylar and what a team. Then add in the dueling Daryl and Chester in the breakdown at the end.... it does not get any better. Could listen to this band play for years. Matter of fact .. I have. So glad I was a live at the time when I got to see them all play for years. All masters of their tools. Breaking down his fills and rolls is so good. I actually like the audio track of this from NY - last show of this tour - a little better. but both are awesome. Thanks for posting.
Have always admired Chester’s drumming... Love seeing it like this, too - up close... And seeing him flip his snare stick @ 00:45 was really a really cool move!
yes same for me . ;-) and at 04:10 when he adjusts his sound with the left hand , and at 05:00 with the litlle shot on the hi-hat. GREAT .. i was lucky enough to see him in Paris in 86 (if my memories are good , it was the day before Genesis live) during a clinic ( a drum demontration , kind of lesson) . I was in front row ;-)
@@justjoshin2825 The name of that place is "Waldbühne" in Berlin, Germany. According to their website it offers space for up to 22.290 people... but you are right, it feels like way more people.
Chester can drum circles around so many musicians that make the "best drummer" lists, yet no one thinks to put him on (most) of them. All I can think is that they just aren't paying attention.
I have been a Genesis fan since '72, but never really related to Collins' stuff until I heard this (on a very special occasion - the birth of our first child....) - wotta song!!
Had the pleasure of going to the wembley arena london concert of this tour I was 14/15 years old with my elder sister and parents, awesome show I'll never forget it
This is very cool the way Chester Thompson is isolated. I play drums for a Phil Collin's Tribute Band (I do the Chester Thompson parts) and it helps to not only HEAR what he does on each song, but also to SEE what he does. Thanks for posting this.
As noted, Chester has been such a great touring drummer over the years. Love how he flips the stick at :42 for the rim taps. Seems like he and Darryl Stuermer (guitar maestro) have been playing live with PC forever... Phenomenal song/performance.
Yep: great observation! That's absolute dedication to perfection. He flips the stick between snare back beats so he gets the butt end, which sounds way better for the rim clicks (and fine fine for single snare back beats), but you need the tip end for all the cymbal work and those gorgeous ghost notes on the snare which Chester masters so beautifully. It's also darn difficult to get the first rim click right without causing a noise when you place the stick on the snare drum head. Sounds like basic stuff, but - like any musical instrument - it's way harder than it looks.
