This particular job is on a 2011 Equinox. Timing marks on chain are easy to see. If you can't see the mark on crank cog try moving the thin washer that may be blocking it. Other than that it's a straight forward timing cover removal and simple chain routing.
I will be posting a video of me doing the front chain with the motor out of the car. Only to show chain routing better. It can be hard to show them on the camera with the motor still in the car.

I know this is old and not sure if you do strictly these 2.4's but I figured it's worth asking. I replaced the chain and tensioners, cam sprockets/phasers are tightened up and other videos say to turn the crank 720 degrees to make sure there's no interference and to verify timing stayed good, yet my crank sprocket is skipping teeth. After two revolutions at the crank everything is off by two teeth. I went and replaced the crank sprocket thinking that was the issue, yet it's still doing it. Seems the intake cam sprocket holds some tension when activating some valves, causing the tensioner to get pushed back. Then snaps forward causing slack to get thrown down to the crank. If you see this comment, any idea wtf I'm doing wrong or what could cause this?
@CarMechaNick
@CarMechaNick 2 года назад
When you crank it the marks won't line up but count the links they should be the same amount of links. Did you pop the tensioner?
@SirSmokesAlott
@SirSmokesAlott 2 года назад
@@CarMechaNick yes I did. And the crank sprocket is 23 teeth, and the cams are 46. From other things I read the same links should like back up with the markings. After two revolutions. Not only that I can visually see it skipped at the bottom when I manually turn the crank. I believe the cams are still timed together, and possibly even the crank but I can't count the links between intake and crank due to not being able to see behind the head/block. Looking at the crank marking though it does look to still be in the 5 o'clock position after 2 rotations. But I'm just worried about the chain skipping. I've also read that oil pressure assists the spring in the tensioner, so maybe starting it up once assembled with stop the chain skipping.
@SirSmokesAlott
@SirSmokesAlott 2 года назад
@@CarMechaNick I didn't count the total chain links of the whole chain, so maybe you're correct about them not lining back up. I'm just going off things I read or seen in videos. Lol. I'm almost positive it's skipping down low, but maybe I'm just seeing slack then no slack as well as noise from the water pump and assuming it's skipping, it sure looks like it is though. I'll try to verify if it's actually skipping by marking a few links when the slack shows up. Thanks for the response btw.
