Being humbled and admitting a shortcoming is a sign of a true professional. I'm watch RU-vid to learn and be entertained, and this channel does both. I don't understand all the points of diagnostics but I do understand how it feels to be humbled. It's a rare treat to be able to call upon another for help and Ivan is just the guy to have as a friend. I could make this comment very long but I will end by saying Merry Christmas and may the new year bring you health, happiness and another 20,000 subs!

i had the same exact thing happen to me years ago working on a yukon. no spark, no fuel pump relay kicking on. went straight to the crank sensor. hooked up the scope and nice square wave. hours went by and the only reason i found out it was the sensor was the ohm value was way off from spec. but man i bet it was because it never went to 0 volts like you presented on this video. i never would have thought to check that. great job for both you and ivan. i know you would have figured it out on your own, but ivan is smart fellow. very humble too. both you and ivan are great teachers. keep up the great work.

Don't beat yourself up over that one. If it's any consolation, my reaction to the first waveform was "Well, that crank sensor is in great shape!" I guess I need to break my habit of just looking at the shape of the waveform. Definitely learned something from this one.

Merry Christmas to you and your family Eric. Thanks for the hours of viewing enjoyment I have gotten from your superb videos. Thanks also for taking it to a higher level - many of the lessons we learn repairing cars are transferable to life in general. You need your friends and you need to go slow if you want to go fast - how true. I hope you have a peaceful holiday and I am looking forward to watching the continuing adventures at SMA in the new year.

Thanks for doing this video, it lead me directly to a bad crank sensor on a 1500 with a 4.8 I'm fixing for a friend, It helped to see the crank sensor sits high and pulls low, the one I was working on was low at all times, swapped and started right away. Literally 1 hour to get it started after sitting untouched for 3 years by the last moron.

I've been doing IT work for 22 yrs, Every day I learn something new. I'm glad, I'd be bored otherwise. I've been cranking on my cars all my life, some items and can't do because I don't have a lift. Or even a garage. So I have to have my mechanic do some. And I have a group of guys do my oil as it's just easier. But I love learning from your videos. Awesome job. You deserve a BEER 🍺!!!

Make sure the sensor you get is the same color as the one on the engine. LS engines have two different colored crank sensors that dictate the number of notches the reluctor has. Either 28 or 52 (I might be wrong on the numbers). If you get the wrong sensor, you will have problems. If the original sensor was black, make sure the replacement sensor is black. If it is gray, replace it with a gray sensor.

With the complexity of modern computer controlled vehicles it is nearly impossible to always catch every facet of diagnostic information. The human mind isn't programmed to operate that way. On the fly (diagnosing various schemes) numerous issues can present. Each scheme, when designed gave the designer time to figure each one, one at a time. A diagnostic mechanic isn't able to have the same depth of knowledge, fresh in mind for each design. Now if you worked on a particular model and got to know it, you could do much better, of course. But even a dealer mechanic doesn't have that luxury. So snags are somewhat expected and having a 'body' of knowledge (other mechanics) is extremely helpful. I once had a mechanic tell me that diagnosing machinery is more difficult than a physician diagnosing a patient because cars can't tell you where it hurts and people can.

Good job Eric. Don't feel bad about missing the values on the crank, I was drinking my morning coffee while watching and my first reaction was what? He has Cam and Crank so why isn't this beast starting? Then when you mentioned your values and you brought up Ivan's video I then myself had the face palm moment. None of us are perfect Eric that's why having good contacts like Ivan pay off. There have been a few times myself I had to call in reinforcements for a second opinion. But like you said that's how we all learn and make ourselves better.

THanks for that video. Very informative. I saw a guy once with a Olds 3.8 that was a no start. It had crank and fuel but no ignition. The exhaust was loaded with fuel from all the cranking and when he triggered the crank sensor like you did it made a spark and the exhaust system exploded. Scared everyone in the shop and blew the muffler to bits.

+motoYam82 doesn't the sensor ground need to be checked before you can call this a bad sensor?  I'm pretty sure it should be less than 100mv for a sensor ground. It's a 3 wire pull up right?  Anyway, thanks for the video Eric, I love this channel.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 8 лет назад
Technically, yes. However, on a low-current sensing circuit, if there was a bad ground, the signal would be stuck high at 12V. So in this case just looking at the signal waveform was enough evidence to condemn the CKP sensor :)
@kins191
@kins191 8 лет назад
+motoYam82 gotcha, I just though a small resistance in the wire could have been preventing the voltage to drop all the way to 0. Thanks!

Great lesson there I recently had to change a crank sensor on my motor, but didn’t use your wizardry to diagnose just a general code reader, anyhow went to undo the bolt and ting it snapped in the block.... spent the rest of the day fixing the garage door that had a spanner embedded in it. Took me a whole day and a half to strip front of car drill the pig out and get it going again having snapped about 10 fixings and bolts on the way, and that was after spending 80 quid degassing the air con then getting a refill - so when I saw you go for that crank sensor bolt I cringed. Sometimes I love trying to do stuff myself, other times I wish I could just leave alone.

It’d be interesting to see if there was any resistance difference between the old and new sensor. Keep up the good work Eric.
