My Grandma taught me to swap out the valve body first to find out if the valve body in the rebuilt transmission was the culprit before doing an r and r of the transmission. That sage advise from my Grandma saved me many hours of unneeded labor.

At 2:55 when you popped the shift linkage off, the move reminded me of a 'near miss' experience when I made a mistake that could have cost me my life. I'll share that experience here for people who stop by, even though it has nothing to do with how you did it. 25 years ago I was under an old Chev Suburban changing the transmission fluid, with the car driven up onto roll-on stands. While taking the pan off I accidentally bumped that shift control. I felt the whole vehicle lurch and I suddenly realized that I had shifted it into neutral. Fortunately I had blocked the tires, and I also had the emergency brake on. So the car shifted but it didn't roll down the stands while I was underneath. I carried on the day normally but it was hard to focus, realizing what might have happened.

Dang, nice work on pre safety measures. I refuse to use those drive on ramps. Way to many variables to cause catastrophic failure/injury. A guy I work with, his cousin just had a truck roll off a set and crushed him. Last I heard he was unconsious in ICU on a ventilator.
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 6 лет назад
Yeah, I eventually got rid of those ramps. They would slide forward when I was driving up, and I was always worried about driving off the end of one of them if I didn't line the wheels up accurately. I brought the story up so that others will think about it before making a similar mistake. RU-vid is great, but a big part of auto mechanics are the mistakes that many of us don't like to talk about.

Yeah, I sheared off knuckle skin cranking on shift linkage. Lots of grease got mixed in with skin and blood. The knuckle healed with a lot of grease still inside. Can still see the black stuff in there today.

sometimes I wonder if "all" the remanufacture companies are owned by the big car makers, seeing they'd love to allow garbage to be produced so they can sell new cars when people get fed up ( cough) problem being, some of us figure things out and run maces up their backends over it. :))

The problem, if you look at the big picture, is the concentration of ownership, they're all large corporations today. Faceless, indifferent, impersonal money making machines. You can't blame a corporation the same way you would a person or a small businesses, because they're all just employees, get your check and punch out. We're partially to blame because we as consumers shop there to save a buck.

I have a 2003 Chevrolet suburban 1500 it needs a new transmission I ordered the transmission for truck I told the owner make sure it works before I pay for it well he doesn't care he shipped it to my house and the guy's who bought it just left it outside I did not know it was there so I hadn't shipped to the dealership to put it in they said that when you go in Third gear squirting I say did you check to find out why he said no. I texted the guy who sold me the transmission and he gave me full refund because I have to another transmission you do a great job 👍😎 keep up the great work you do you are very nice guy and smart worker. When I was in tech school, me and another student rebuilt a Chevy th350 transmission. The owner picked it up on Friday, brought it back on Monday, complaining it quit. We noticed the tail housing was cracked, and when we tore it apart, we found the output shaft twisted like a rotini noodle. The guy admitted he and his buddy got drunk and floored it in reverse to about fifty, slammed it into drive, and floored it again....huh, theres your problem, lady...🤔😒🙄
@bairfamilyfarm1336
@bairfamilyfarm1336 6 лет назад
dave1135 I thought it would wreck the clutch packs or torque converter before it would twist a tailshaft. It would make me mad to see someone trash something less than a week after I rebuilt it.
@dave1135
@dave1135 6 лет назад
zappy bear it wrecked the entire transmission, we had to get another trans and go thru it. He said he was going about fifty in reverse, although I think it was probably closer to thirty. He was still rolling at that speed when he shifted from reverse to drive then put the gas pedal to the floor. That was a huge shock to the drive line. This was in 1989, and the car was a early 70's Chevy Nova with a 350 v8.
@dave1135
@dave1135 6 лет назад
zappy bear at the tech school I went to, people could have work done for free, just paid for parts. He goofed, and tried to blame us. But it was obvious what had happened and that it was no fault of ours. He got another trans and a overhaul kit and we did it again. Gave us another trans to gain experience on. We didn't want to use any parts from his original trans due to the amount of damage we found to the internals. It wasn't worth using them and hoping they would not fail
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 6 лет назад
lol, I used to do that in a pontiac T1000 "chevette clone" with it full of high school friends. it did nice one wheel peels and made lots of noise, one day it went "BANG" I thought it spit the driveshaft, universal, tranny parts. when I noticed every gear position was neutral, turned out the spider gears were shrapnel. yanked a used set from junkyard rear end and I was back in business. the tow bill cost more I abused it for another year then totaled it out "chevette vs chevette" :))

That being said, If I spent hours replacing a transmission that only lasted 30mi. and didn't get my time reimbursed, I would be steaming, but still understanding, because you knew the terms before doing the job... So wish I had a lift. I've removed the trans in my suburban 3 times while on custom blocks in my driveway. The fun part is when you go to install the bolts for the torque converter and when you get to the 3rd bolt, the threads are missing from the nut welded to the torque converter. Trying to run a tap through it while laying on your back is not easy.

I have completely sworn off Advance Auto as a source of parts. 98% of the time, you're better off grabbing the part from the junkyard - and that really sucks! Too bad there isn't a NAPA closer to you - although they're not immune either, they have a better average ... From Advance, I've had misboxed brake calipers, misboxed U-joints, water pumps, front end components - you name it, they've screwed it up at least once, sometimes more! Last set of calipers, they forgot to run threads for the banjo bolts!! SUPER frustrating, especially when you're expecting an easy job and schedule things accordingly. GRRR!!! 21st Century life! I feel your pain, man! Before I found your channel, I seriously thought it was just me!

Those midknight gloves are great for the fire/ems world. Durable for what we use them for but I agree with you in regards to auto repair they aren't great at all. I've grabbed a few extra pairs from the station when I have to do brakes or any vehicle repair at home and they last about 10 minutes before I'm changing them.

I bet that he did this R&R faster than just the removal of the first one. No rusty bolts to fight and recent memory of the procedure.

Bud I worked my ass off at Advance for over a year while going back to school to be an A&P, already holding an ASE, and years experience in the field of auto repair. I knew EXACTLY what I was talking about or kept my mouth shut, especially when it came to questions about gm trash. I'd just tell em that I refused to work on em so I'm the wrong person to ask.

On one street in my town we have a NAPA, Autozone, Advance Auto, O'Reilly's, Consumer Auto Parts, and maybe a couple more. The only two that are any good are NAPA and C.A.P.. The other ones sell garbage. They're fine if you want fuzzy dice to hang from your mirror or chrome valve stem caps shaped like Elvis, but for actual parts it's NAPA and C.A.P.

Eric, I'm jealous. I never get a pickup transmission job that doesn't come with some ridiculous cobblefuct "custom" dual exhaust and some evidence that somebody challenged the notion that you can't and shouldn't booger weld the pipe to the frame or the driveshaft or the leaf spring. I once saw a rear cat flange with broken studs reconnected to the next pipe with C clamps. I get so deep into working around and or fixing these things, I forget I'm there to change a transmission.

Now I know why they call them drop lights--they always drop when you least expect it.On those cooler line fittings, I figure the o-ring type is the new design and the other one is the old design. The old design uses a tapered pipe thread to seal to the case. GM probably stopped using the pipe thread fittings because the case cracks if they're overtightened and it's sometimes tricky to keep the pipe threads from leaking.

Remember back when GM used TH-350 or 400? I'm not sure about the Power-Glide or the later overdrive transmissions, but, the 350 n 400s bell housing didn't go completely around the flex plate. You could remove a dust shield and get easy access to the torque converter bolts. They also had steel trans cooler lines with good Ol fashioned flare nuts and none of the electronic crap (until the 1980s, and even then, not near as much) that is in todays vehicles. Aaahhh, the good Ol days!

Boy, you were pretty calm about that whole deal. Me, I'd have been really pissed. But I guess it's not quite so bad having the use of a lift. 98% of the trans. swaps I did, being a shade tree guy, were from jack stands in the bushes. I certainly wouldn't have been happy at all! Thanks for the video, and hats off to your patients. Gotta add, I could never use those rubber gloves, made my hands just sweat like hell, it was almost like a couldn't breath, messed up for sure..and some more, what is it with rebuild shops? I've experienced the same shit! Supposedly rebuilt and craps out in a day. What a racket!

Reminds me of my buddy's reman'd 5.4 SOHC he got through O'Reilly Auto. First one had an oil pump fail, second one blew a head gasket at 5k miles. The guy is in his 50's and drove his truck easy. Buying reman engines and transmissions through these national parts stores is a bad deal it seems.

The only saving grace is that everything is already fought and ready to be spun off. Don't they test these things. I rebuilt a TH350 years ago in my driveway. The 1972 Chevy van that it was in always had reverse slippage since new one replaced under warrantee and 2 others in its 240000 miles of reverse babying. when the fourth went, We (myself and my dad rebuilt it reverse worked perfect) never had another issue in the 45000 miles just shy of 300000 miles we continued to own it. 12/11 17 edit: oh I should mention, The engine Never had the heads off had its original bearings (checked them when We did the Crank seal and oil pan seal still perfectly usable with little wear), crank. Cam was done under warrantee at 25000 miles as these originally had soft cams from the factory , Rear main timing chain and intake manifold gasket set later in its life. 3000 mile oil changes may have burned 1/2 qt in between oil changes. Have to love the cast iron beast engines of yesterday. Dad bought new with 12 miles on the clock in Massachusetts.
