Some notes for those of you about to tackle this rebuild; It's super easy, and 3rd Gen Guy goes into incredible detail with this, but having just done this yesterday I have some tips/advice to add with issues I ran into. Also thank you so much 3rd Gen Guy, without your video I would have had to have a mechanic do this. Thanks a ton. 1) LUBRICATE THE O-RINGS! I did not do this, and I blew out the O-rings! The injectors started dumping fuel out into the throttle body, and my car sounded like a truck! Struggled to start, stay on, it was super ugly. Had to let the car spend the night in an O Reilly parking lot and didn't find the issue until the next day. The Haynes manual says to use transmission fluid, but motor oil (what I used), vaseline, and dish soap all work good too. 2) Removal of the injectors. My injectors did not simply pull out, no matter what I used. I used vise grips ontop of where the screws go, holding down the injector pod cover, with some cardboard to protect the smooth gasket face, and using the head of the vice grips as a leverage point, used a screwdriver underneath the center "mushroom" between the two poles of the injector to pry it up out of its seating. Much easier than scarring the injector by clamping down too hard in my case. 3) If you dont have an electrolysis kit, some carb/choke cleaner will run you 6 bucks for 2 bottles and you can pick up a pack of little wire brushes (plastic, brass & steel) at an auto store. Combined with some Q-tips and maybe a little PB Blaster (make sure you wash everything out afterwards with carb cleaner if you use this) and you can polish that aluminum right up. 4) Make sure to take pictures of everything as you're disassembling it step by step Hope this helps anyone trying to head this on. Thanks again for the video.

Thanks for the info. Putting the parts into a cardboard map is a great idea + the pictures . I would also check all metal surfaces for warpage with a metal straight edge . I also check the throttle shaft for excessive play in the bushings . Use flare nut / tubing wrenches and 6 point sockets where possible . Great video . Bill .

Hey! Thanks for the tips! I have a question though... I have a couple o rings left over in my kit. A green one and I think a couple larger black ones, ( but still smaller than the O-rings that go in the injectors)and the foam ring. I also have to larger figure eight o rings that I believe go to the Rochester 300 along with the other plate gasket. I guess my question is... Is this normal to have these leftover on the 220 Rochester rebuild?
@Fenrir1398
@Fenrir1398 4 года назад
@@bonscotty67 Im not certain :( my 3rd gen got totaled last year by a drunk driver so I haven't worked on one in a bit. I would look up some schematics for the Throttle body or the parts list of the kit you bought to see if it describes what they are.
@bonscotty67
@bonscotty67 4 года назад
Thanks for replying. Yeah it's just one small green o ring and a little larger black one, the foam ring. And the figure eight that I know goes to the 300. Anyway I'll have to taking apart again and see if I collapsed the fuel regulator gasket. Pressing it down with that spring was kind of a hassle and probably f'd it up. I've replaced about everything on this truck and it still runs like crap. Oh well. Thanks again. Wish me luck :-)

Thank You 3rd Gen Guy. This video was very helpful. I rebuilt my TBI today. You made it look easy! I had trouble with one of the injectors leaking from the top, and google told me it was an o-ring problem. The orings that came with the rebuild kit were slightly too large and kept coming out as I tightened down the plate on the injectors. I solved this by putting the rubber oring in first followed by the steel oring. No leaks now. Also... after completing this, the injectors seemed super loud inside the cab of my truck, the rapid ticking sound was really loud, I thought I broke something. Consulted google again, turns out it was just one of the steel fuel lines was making contact with my cab, the noise is normal but not supposed to be transmitted into the cab. I pulled the steel fuel line away from the cab and buffered it with plastic corrugated covering stuff. No more noise! Finished. I didn't tune it yet, but I will do that maybe next week. Thank you for showing us how to do that as well, you're awesome.

tt was a pleasure to watch this video as I did a rebuild on the tbi of my 87 s10 blazer last year. The one thing that I did differently was to fabricate a fitting that I could pump carb cleaner thru the injectors while using the 9v battery technique. I was concerned about clogged injectors so I wanted to insure that the spray pattern was excellent. I had to do other things at the same time, o2 sensor, throttle position senson and just recently the idle control valve. The enjine has great power for a 2.8 and is very responsive on acceleration. I wish I had seen your video when I was going to attempt the job. It was a good review for me.

Great step by step video. Mine was with an upgraded lower half and a new spring for greater fuel pressure. Only thing I would change would be pulling the injectors with pliers. This is a bad idea and actually much harder than levering them out. The key is to break the hold on the bottom ring. Pulling straight up is more difficult. Loved it.

Thanks! Great! Had serious problem with a 89 350 tbi that I installed in a 56 chevy pickup. Did not respond and very hard to start. Followed Your instruction, never worked with a fuel injected trottle body before. Got a fuel leak from the fuel pressure regulator, did it right, was a bit more careful with the spring, not a big deal. Magic, it runs so well, and so responsive and starts in a fraction of a second. / Bo Johansson, Sweden.

Great tutorial. I've rebuilt a TBI once before. This was a good refresher for me. One thing I did not learn until now is the idle re-program which you show here. Just did this procedure and the video was a big help. Suggestion: while installing the fuel pressure regulator gasket, I cut 4 pieces of aluminum wire approx .100 thick and 6"long to make posts to keep the spring, cover and gasket straight as I collapsed it. Insert the wire post through spring cap and bottom assembly. The posts kept the housing centered and the gasket in correct position. Remove post one at a time and tighten screws. Great video, thanks for posting!

While you have it apart, take a little extra time to blend and polish the throats and add a spacer to the injector tower. The airflow can be improved by a fair amount, along with throttle response and fuel atomization by doing so. An adjustable fuel pressure regulator doesn't hurt either, makes them much more tuneable. Doesn't hurt to pop the cover off the idle screw for further tuning if you're getting a little aggressive with your timing. Nicely done Sir! This vid is a perfect example of no-nonsense, get it done, it's easier than it looks kind of wrenching.

Jeremy, Because automobiles are ubiquitous, I tended to take Mom’s Chevy ‘91 van as a boat building carrier to Florida. I ride bicycle after measuring Cutty Sark to build Caledonia, built across river Leven, Scotland in 1850. Umpteen journeys to Cedar Key, Fl. are promising. Oak keels, steel bending hand tools, lots of wood, and following Lloyd’s Rules of 1868. Chevrolet is driven no more than 44 mi/hr to conserve fuel and park for months at a time. It’s half length of Denny’s Caledonia which hauled coal from Stockton to London. I really listened to 3rd Gen Guy’s inflections of words he speaks.

great video for a basic rebuild when your putting it back together use some atf on all the o-rings also o-rings on the fuel lines there are a bunch of mods that you can do like order a big block kit use the spacer under the injector to raise it up (more air flow )also the regulator is also adjustable when its apart the disc inside move it up for more and down for less make the notch larger in the cover remove the tab that holds it static cut small notch,s around the disc so a small tool can be used to adjust up or down this things like about 15 psi butt will run on about 9 psi if your a mileage guy keep it down to about 10 or 12 an HP guy crank it up to 15 or more they also love boost I had a 383 alum head with a pro-charger and past Calif emissions

Hey great video. I've used it to rebuild my tbi. I have a 91 buick roadmaster with the 305 tbi. I replaced the iac and now my car is running super rough and rich at idle. Will doing the reset as per your video will work?
