I hear ya...great feeling ain't it? Done the same thing in my Honda S2000 with the headers and vtec kicking in. Listening to this song. Special feeling.
Hughes was a big music buff. He would receive a collection of songs and go through them to see what would work in a certain scene and what wouldn’t; according to what I have heard, it was his favorite part of the filmmaking process.
The song was sung by the flower pot men. They weren't even American. They were from England, but they nailed such an amazing song for this beautiful scene in a totally Chicago movie. I hope they were invited to go down Lakeshore drive and experience the skyline during these years because they completely nailed it. The song was made for LSD
I love this movie. Beat City is just one of the best songs to play whilst driving along. It makes me wanna take a road trip through America. "...Roll into America, Roll your hands in policies, I love it when you smile, I love it when you... Run, run, run, run, run,..."
I lived in Chicago during college. Everything about this sequence captures a young person exploring the city, and for that reason it will always be one of my favorite scenes in a film.
As someone who visited Chicago for the first time this past spring, I have to say, this song sums up the energy and excitement of The Windy City perfectly. I love it there, and can't wait to return! Such an amazing city.
Alex Awesomekid Or as i like to think of it, trounced by its knockoff, “Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.” It would have probably been a fairer fight if Paramount actually got John Hughes on board.
What great memories! I grew up in the suburbs, and sometimes we'd ditch high school and Metra downtown. This music, the imagery, just brings me back. Later in life, working at Pepsi in Gurnee, i filled pop machines at that school! My life was a Hughes film. Invokes such great emotions, and wonderful memories.I loved Chicago back then.
Upon hearing this song played during this segment of the film, I thought the lyrics at first were saying "big city now now" referring to Chicago where the storyline of this film supposedly takes place but later I've come to find out that the name of the song is actually called "Beat City" instead. Has anyone else misheard the lyrics of this song thinking it was saying the same thing that I've thought I've heard them singing as well ? Just curious. But if you ask me, I think it would've been a better idea and name of the song if it was called what I've mistakenly thought I heard them singing at first. But that's just my opinion though.
I only lived in Chicago for 4 years, but man, how the city looked in the 80s is a lot better than today. Still has its charms, but whatever happened to the beauty the city once had 30 years ago?
As a Chicagoan I absolutely love this movie! Fun fact though at 1:30 is the Ohio Street Ramp exiting from the Kennedy Expressway which would make sense being that they were coming from Northbrook (or as they call it in the movie Shermer), however at 1:38 they’re driving south on Lake Shore Drive which actually would make no sense because Ohio Street is south of where that scene is. Obviously they did it though to get footage of the Hancock Center
My favorite movie of all time. I remember watching this as a little kid, before the movie was even 5 years old…and I would just dream of what high school would be like and if it would be anything like this.
This song sounds so much better and different in this scene than it does in the studio version. I’d love the song if it actually sounded like this movie version.
Does it bother any other Chicagoan that when they're driving southbound on LSD, its supposed to be morning, but the angle of the sun indicates late afternoon? Almost evening.
I got bothered because the scenes were filmed all around and cut between them like them driving east toward the loop, and then cut to LSD southbound. Idk not many movies take that level of detail. Not even Baby Driver
Beat City fans here is a link to Flowerpot men’s album to be released 14th April 2023 for the first time, which includes “Beat City” flowerpotmen.lnk.to/1984
When I was 5 I thought the lyrics were "big city now now, beep beep, beep beep." It made sense to me because cars in the big city beep a lot. When I found out what the actual lyrics were about 15 years later I was pretty embarrassed.
Please dont say we’re not gonna take the car home. Please dont say we’re not gonna take the car home. Please dont say we’re not gonna take the car home. Please dont say we’re not gonna take the car home.
Man watching this scene reminds me what a great nation the USA is? Look how advanced the US was and this was 1986. Makes my country look like a toilet. I know know Chicago is worse now, because there is a lot of gang violence and crime, but Chicago here is what a modern city should look like, wide roads, plush green suburbs, nice buildings. I love Ferris Bueller's Day off one the greatest movies of Hollywood history.
The chicago shown here, suburbs included, is more or less the same as now. The gang violence is in just one part of the city, and the same stuff happened there when this movie was made.
I’m a native Chicagoan, and the city is fine just gets a bad rap from Trump and FOX News that think we all live in some war zone. I can assure you we don’t, Chicago doesn’t even rank on the highest murder rate cities. St. Louis, New Orleans, Cleveland, and Baltimore are all far more violent than Chicago is, and all the crime that happens is in like two areas of the city that have been rough since like the late 60’s. The overwhelming majority of Chicago is safe and still very beautiful
