"Cachái" actually comes from the english verb "to catch" like "you catch it?" in the sense of getting something when someone's talking; so the verb "to catch" in spanish would be like "cachar". In Chile they do an aspiration of the final -s or they just drop it. As you said in the video, in chilean dialect (not formally because its considerated wrong) the 2nd person singular its like the 2nd person plural in european spanish (vosotros) but since in Chile they drop the final -s its like "andái" instead of "andáis". Thats why they say "cachái" meaning "you got it?"

Soy brasileño y tuve que trabajar en un proyecto en Chile. Estuve allá varias veces y tuve reuniones semanales por 2 años. Even in Chile, we have a lot of different words with the same meaning, like, the bus, in some places is "micro" but some other places say "liebre", so its hard for people from the North of Chile to understand people from the south, or from the Capital City XD

Hasta los insultos son parecidos. Obvio hay otras cosas que no decimos, pero me sorprendió la similitud. Ahora, si se juntan dos amigos de barrio a hablar, hablan tan rápido y cortado que no entiendo. there is NO connection whatsoever. not at all. chileans speak an archaic spanish and simply drop the final "s" on the vosotros form. no connection to italian. the roots go back to chile's original colonization. italians never emigrated to chile in the numbers they did to argentina, uruguay, brazil or even peru. many arrived but not enough to influence the language beyond an odd loan word.

The last time I was in Mexico an astute listener told me I spoke Spanish like a Chilean teenager from 30 years ago. And she was right because that's where and when I learned to speak the language. In fact, I learned a lot of my Spanish from hours of reading the comic books of Condorito. My favorite Chilean word is siútico, which is a special pejorative referring to those pretentious, ridiculous victims of arribismo. Most of the turns of phrase that once made me cool in Chile were incomprehensible in Mexico. Now I'm trying to broaden my skills. All I really want is to be understood and for people to think I have a cute accent.

Hilarious when you asked if she was speaking differently so you could understand her. I moved to spain 4 years ago, after 12 years in Chile where i grew up and learned spanish as a kid. Ive met people from all over the spanish speaking world here in spain, most of them still use their everyday accent and get by with people understanding them, but chileans HAVE to adapt their accent, cadance, and vocabulary overseas. Its a skill we all learn and it becomes easy to accent switch after a few years. estái, cachái, hacís, tenís, etc. is what’s called VOSEO (verbal) CHILENO. it’s called verbal because in Chile the verb conjugation is quite common in the spoken language, but the use of the pronoun “vos” itself is more limited. It’s actually quite easy since it’s very similar to the conjugation of “vosotros”. Amazing video! This is gonna be super useful for when I go there on my year abroad in Chile next year! From what I heard, it sounds like a lot of the words are similar to those in Italian, for example, 'carabineros' might come from the Italian 'cabinieri' which is a word for a specific type of police. Also, the 'como estai' sounds really like the Italian 'come stai.' Really interesting thank you :).

epic djyoshi Well, Chile took that police influence but the chilean language is not really influenced by the italian. the italian influence on the chilean police (Carabineros) are an exception (and that was good, because they are one or may be the best latin american police). another things are not italian, for example, the army has a strong prussian influence in the marchs, uniforms and doctrine. you can search on youtube the chilean army and it really look like prussian.
Yes the military police of Chile were mainly Carabiniers. Patrolling with carbines atop of their horses. Many governments used this type of soldier to keep the peace in the absence of a regional police force.

Loved this! Pluuuus, another word that we use is “to occupy” for “to use”, so this girl is saying “la otra palabra que OCUPAMOS mucho”... I had a hard time with some other Spanish speakers when I used that word for that purpose haha 😆
yes it threw me off, because we use the word to mean " to be in a certain physical space" which is the actual meaning but they use it more metaphorically and for them is the normal usage.
What I like about Chileans is that while other countries like to claim to have a neutral Spanish accent (spoiler alert: no country has a "neutral" accent), they embrace the fact that their accent is difficult to understand. Cool people.

Por eso me apresuro a aclarar, por si hiciera falta, que lo que aparece en este vídeo es el registro muy coloquial e inculto del español de Chile y que por supuesto se muestra aquí por diversión. Cualquier hablante chileno con un mínimo de educación sabrá con quién y en qué momento usar este registro. Cada vez que la ocasión o el interlocutor lo requiere, los chilenos hablamos tan bien y tan mal como cualquier otro hispanohablante. Sin embargo, he notado que en foros como este o en las redes sociales se ha hecho una especie de lugar común que esta forma coloquial de hablar es como todos los chilenos se expresan siempre, lo que evidentemente no es cierto, e incluso parece, por los comentarios de los propios chilenos aquí, que algunos hasta se sienten orgullosos de que los hablantes de otros lugares crean que así es el castellano normal de Chile. Bueno, hay algunos de nosotros que no pensamos que esa injustificada mala fama sea algo para ufanarse y estamos por aquí para poner las cosas en su contexto. Bueno, sin ir más allá es como el latín formal y el vulgar: la gente sin duda hablaba ambos hasta que progresivamente el vulgar fue ganando terreno, con sus particularidades en cada zona geográfica. Incluso con un sesgo de clase, donde las aristocracias y las instituciones eclesiásticas mantenían el uso formal del latín y el resto de la gente no le daba tanta importancia. En lo personal no encuentro razón alguna para catalogar el dialecto chileno como 'incorrecto' ni mucho menos 'inculto', y de hecho lo estimo con poseedor de una riqueza lingüística tremenda. Si no fuera por la injustificada carga peyorativa que le dan algunos grupos sociales, hablaría el dialecto chileno en cualquier espacio social. Por otro lado, si un extranjero le da mala fama o no le gusta cómo hablo, cosa de él: que no me escuche entonces; yo por mi parte no voy a tener problemas con conversar con él y obviamente siempre buscando un terreno lingüístico común para que me pueda entender (como ha hecho toda la humanidad en literalmente toda su historia).

Acá en Chile decimos "al tiro". El "al toque" lo usan algunos y es reciente (no más de 25 años), y es producto de la inmigración peruana. Es "al tiro" lo que hemos dicho toda la vida. Mi teoría del "cómo estái" es que viene del español antiguo "cómo estáis", al cual con el tiempo le quitamos la S.
Exactamente, es así. "Estái" es "estáis" con la S aspirada. A eso se denomina voseo verbal, es decir, el uso de la forma verbal que le correspondería al pronombre "vos" (como también a su plural, "vosotros"), ya que ése era el pronombre de segunda persona singular que usaban la mayoría de los colonos españoles en América.

@@dexorne9753 Hola, hace 30 años nadie decía "al toque" en Chile, pero desde mediados de los 90 empezó a llegar una gran inmigración peruana a Chile. Inevitablemente algunos de sus dichos se traspasaron al uso local, como "al toque". A mí no me gusta decir "al toque", prefiero mil veces el "al tiro", que es lo que hemos usado toda la vida. Tu español está bastante bueno, ojalá lo sigas aprendiendo. Saludos.
Cachai, viene del inglés "to catch". Las terminaciones "ai" de las palabras como dices tú, vienen de España, pero en Chile tendemos a "comernos" las letras S al hablar, especialmente cuando van al final de la palabra entonces, antiguamente la frase sería "Cómo estais?" y con el tiempo quedó en "cómo estai" y así con la mayoría de los verbos que terminan en "as" ej: vas = vai, andas = andai, cantas=cantai, estudias=estudiai etc. La expresión "al tiro" proviene, según una de las teorías, del campo chileno, los trabajadores eran llamados a almorzar por medio de un tiro de escopeta, de tal forma que las personas decían "vamos a almorzar al tiro (de la escopeta)" osea, inmediatamente al escuchar el disparo. Respecto a las policías, sí se le llama policía cuando se menciona a la institución en general, por ejemplo: "La policía se hizo presente en el lugar de los hechos..." aunque además de los Carabineros (aka Pacos) existe otra la PDI que es la Policía De Investigaciones, que como su nombre lo dice, se encarga más a la investigación de crímenes y no al orden público como Carabineros.
@@someoney8066 el acento claro, puede que sea andaluz, pero yo hablo de las palabras. Muchos chilenismos provienen de palabras indígenas. Te doy ejemplos: cura (priest), guacala (disgusting), tata (grandfather), pololo (boyfriend), cachuín (goosip), guagua (baby), y un muchas más, son palabras aymaras/quechua/mapudungun.

Andaluz sounds nothing like a chilean Spanish, it sounds like Cuban or puertorrican as all the families that colonized these islands were from there and the Canarias.

I agree with that. Although, I think it's a bit more difficult the other way around, learn Portuguese from a Spanish background. I've a couple of friends from Brazil and they were able to understand Spanish even when my Hispanic friends and I were speaking Spanish really fast. However, when my Brazilian friends were speaking Portuguese really fast between them, my friends (the Hispanic ones) and I just understood like 4 or 5 words.

La palabra pololo proviene del mapudungun que en primera instancia era "pelulu" y con el tiempo término en pololo y así con varias palabras del español de Chile , entre otras que provienen de otros pueblos originarios , algunas del inglés y así sustantivamente etc etc etc.

The phrase Chileans speak Chileans in terms of dialectology and true and beautiful. Chile puts a lot of Oceanid, Asian and indigenous terms in their Spanish that turned it into Chilean. Efectivamente la terminación "ai" como estai, mirai, etc venía del "voseo" que se ocupó en Chile desde la colonia, hasta que a mediado del siglo pasado un brillante presidente intentó cambiar al "tuteo", gracias a esto el chileno es un híbrido desordenado en estructura, eso además de la inmensa cantidad de palabras extrañas que se usan.
La forma de conjugar con el -ai, viene del voseo reverencial que se transformó en voseo americano, y que en Argentina por ejemplo es "vos saltás", en Chile es "vos saltáis" pero con el tiempo y aspiración de las eses quedó en voh saltái, y luego hubo un esfuerzo enorme a nivel educacional de eliminar el voseo, y a pesar que se utiliza el vos, es casi vulgar, por ende quedó la forma de conjugación tú saltái, tú te arrepentíai etc etc... es el voseo chileno en la conjugación...
Hola Nate, hay un idioma que se llama el ladino es un castellano antiguó lo hablan en Israel, ya que en el siglo XV los reyes católicos los expulsaron de España llevaban 2 mil años ya eran españoles. En Israel hay gente que habla el ladino o sefardí, seria genial que hablara con alguien de allá. Saludos.
El "Cómo estai" "Donde estai" vienen del español antiguo "cómo estáis" ...son reminiscencias del español antiguo de Andalucía y Castilla. Qué lata que no hayas escogido a una persona que sepa del idioma español chileno.

I am brazilian but I speak english and spanish too ( in fact I'm always studying to improve mu skills). The australian english and the chilean spanish are the most difficult accent to understand. My time in Chile was absoluty amazing but I had a lot of difficulties in comunication. Furthermore, and for my luck, many people speak english ( that was a very good surprise).

yo como chilena claramente estoy acostumbrada el escuchar hablar a la gran mayoria con muchos modismos, acortando las palabras y de forma rápida, pero debo admitir que a veces llega un cierto punto que fastidia, puesto que abusan demasiado con los modismos y los garabatos de por medio.
Durante muuuuchos años en Chile se miraba con mucho respeto a la Argentina, lo que hizo que muchas palabras del lunfardo rioplatense pasaran al habla chilena común, como "mina" por ejemplo
La forma de hablar de los chilenos, es la forma de hablar de los Andaluces en España. Chile no solo es el unico que habla de esa forma, hay muchos países como Puerto rico, Cuba, El Interior de Panamá se parece mucho, la zona costera de Colombia. Tienen muchas palabras y terminaciones que se usan tambien en chile.
This is so funny. The number of ways a Chilean can conjugate “huevon” is just astounding. I’m from Seattle but lived in Stgo Chile for 2 years after college. I had no idea how hard the Spanish was before I moved there. My brain hurt by the end of each day wading thru the swear words to find the meaning in what people said. It’s a beautiful country, I miss the completos and the Piscola!
