China’s Ride-Hailing Industry Collapses! 6.4 Million Drivers Jobless Overnight-Only Begging Left!

In a sluggish economy, fewer people are choosing to take ride-hailing services, yet the number of registered ride-hailing drivers is increasing. According to China’s Ministry of Transport, by December 2020, there were 2.9 million ride-hailing driver licenses issued across the country. By December 2023, this number had reached almost 6.6 million, surpassing 6.5 million for the first time. In 2023 alone, almost 1.5 million new licenses were issued, indicating a 127.3% increase in ride-hailing drivers from 2020 to 2023.
However, the number of users has not grown as quickly. Didi’s annual report shows that as of March 31, 2023, there were 411 million active users in China’s travel market, with 19 million active drivers. In contrast, Didi’s prospectus from March 31, 2021, indicated 377 million active users and 13 million active drivers.
Comparing these figures, Didi’s active users increased by 9% over two years, while active drivers grew by 42.6%, which far outpaces user growth.

The thing is... how did these drivers treat their customers when they where making 10k a month? I've been to China many times... no where in Asia where the drivers more unfriendly than in China. Now they're actually crying because they have no customers and blame it on everyone else. Karma is a bi*ch.

Recently out of curiosity, I tried a 2 week "vacation" in china. Brought only a burner phone and a backpack of basics. The scams began immediately at the airport. I immediately re booked a ticket for the next day to Thailand instead after experiencing scam after scam after scam in china. True I lost a sum of money which i now consider "tuition" for my china lesson. I had originally planned to shop for indigenous musical instruments which I collect. Every chinese friend I know who knew about my china trip warned me very sternly and advised strongly about reconsidering. Even the food in the supposedly 5 star hotel was beyond questionable, the water in the bathroom smelled foul, the pollution caused difficulty breathing and migraines. All in just 24 hours.

Companies don't care; the more drivers there are, the less they have to pay because so many will scramble for the few customers. The companies also still make money on all the car rentals and fees even if the drivers don't get many clients. It's strange how the CCP is so controlling, but it lets some of these businesses grow without limit until they fail, leaving lots of trash behind. Look at the rental scooters and bikes. I wouldn't be surprised if it all came down to the companies bribing the local CCP officials while screwing over the workers. Classic communist/socialist failure.

The company itself doesn't care about the number of licenses it offers. It makes the commission based on demand volume. There is no regulation (ironically) to limit the number so demand is dispersed with an appropriate number of drivers like there is in the US where there is a limit to the number of drivers the city will allow. In this situation there should be 1/3 the current number, then volume would be appropriate per driver and if needed, allow more and require the employees to have limited four or six month contracts so that volume can be dynamically adjusted based on surges/troughs in demand. I remember while in China I took a cab.. maybe twice total. The metro (subway) is enough to get around the metropolitan and most sopping is in walking distance from residential blocks. Though the food will make you sick more than it will keep you healthy but that's another topic.

The Chinese economy is plummeting. There are no jobs, and many workers who have jobs are not getting paid. Citizens have lost a lot of money in the stock market and the home-buying market. There are no orders for ride-hailing cars. So how is it that every clip shows big traffic jams, and long queues with people waiting for transportation?

That is sad. In the US just flipping burgers 40 hours a week will earn you over $2000 a month after taxes, at least around me (Michigan in the US). It is a small city of 10,500 but there is good schools, no crime, lots of parks, a nice beech, very clean... You can get a decent 2 bedroom apartment in town for $800 a month too. You split that with someone and add utilities and cell phone and you are looking at $600 a month tops. That leaves you $1400 for a car (if you want one), food, entertainment... My son has been doing this for 5 years now and has saved up almost $30,000. It is in a bank account earning 5% interest. He does not have a car though, but he loves collecting trains and Lego sets. He is turning 23 in a month and has an 800 credit score.
@Eldritchpi
@Eldritchpi 12 дней назад
Your bubble sounds nice. In Washington state, you need to make $26.62 an hour to afford the 13-1600 a month 600ish sq ft 1 bd rm apt and have renters insurance on top of that. So essentially, you get to make 4.2k a month just to live paycheck to paycheck, and there are very few jobs that even come close to 20 an hour. Enjoy it while it lasts. I forgot to add that the last time I went to the store it was 46$ for a loaf of bread, lunch meat, a pack of cheese, jar of mayo and a bottle of mustard.
@toddabbott781
@toddabbott781 12 дней назад
@@Eldritchpi Usually as soon as you get far enough from the large cities things are not as bag. I find it funny (or sad) when people point out you can not afford to live in the cities on minimum wage. Nobody makes minimum wage and if you can not make good money in the city you should not be living in the city. The best answer for so many people's problems is... MOVE. I lived in the ghetto for 10 years. I was good with money and saved up and MOVED. I was not going to raise my kids there.
@mythosdreams5814
@mythosdreams5814 11 дней назад
Um $20 an hour your Gross pay for 40 hours is $800 BEFORE taxes. after taxes it's like $600 a week you bring home.
@Eldritchpi
@Eldritchpi 11 дней назад
@mythosdreams5814 you should try a class in reading comprehension. 26.62 is 4.2k monthly, which is the MINIMUM you need to make as an individual to live alone. I then stated that the majority of jobs don't even pay 20$ an hour. So let me dumb this down further for both of you. You can not make enough to live alone on the West Coast, which is why everyone either has roommates or is in a relationship where both people have to work full time to afford the bare minimum. It is even worse in the city where everything is about 30% higher, I live at the city limits in a rural area.
@toddabbott781
@toddabbott781 10 дней назад
@@Eldritchpi Then MOVE! It is not like this in the whole country. You are taking a worst case scenario and acting like this is the normal. Stay away from the big cities and you should be fine. Most of the statistics for the average cost of rentals is MUCH higher because this include high end apartments and house rentals. Do a search for a 2 bedroom apartment outside the city and tell me what that is. In Michigan the average for the state is $998. The average entry level job in Michigan is $15.35 an hour. That is $2,456 a month. 2 incomes come to $4,912. This means a couple flipping burgers sharing a 2 bedroom apartment based on averages for Michigan puts the rent at just over 20%. This is more than survivable. I think today's young adults do not understand the concept of entry level homes. They also do not understand what work or being responsible with your money. If you can not land a high paying job in an area then you should not be living in that area... MOVE. If the cost of living is too high then the employers will struggle to find workers and they will need to pay more.

Even in NYC driving a cab has been a boom or bust industry. China has had a supercycle boom market since the 80s so their crash seems to be way worse now that the bubble has popped. Way way too many drivers tho. It's surprising how many people spent all that money on a taxi car that they probably won't make enough to pay off.

The same thing happens with any gig-based economy. At least, you can do well if you’re well off before the over abundance of gig workers. I used to be a food delivery worker. I wasn’t making much money, like $60-$70 for 4-5 hours a day. I do be humble and it’s okay, but some days you can’t make any money. When, you have too many people doing DoorDash, GrubHub, and UberEats, it can be hard to make any money. It can be especially difficult in an area like NYC or San Francisco. I laugh every time when a gig company says you can make big money. It’s not the abundance of orders, but the operation costs pertaining to your car. China has it so different. I would say they have it on a different level. I blame the government.

They outsource production to China. It's a Chinese company operating in the US. For the record, I love the Chinese people and I love their culture. I pray with urgency for the CCP and for some kind of government change for the citizens of China to be able to thrive. You mean there is somebody out there who would get into a self-driving taxi in China? Give them a medal (posthumously, obviously) for sheer insane levels of lack of self regard and bravery. I wouldn't get in a taxi with a driver in China, let alone one without. I suppose elctric scooters have the advantage that you don't need to open a door when leaping for safety when you see flames licking round your feet when the battery erupts! The maths in this video is weird. 300 yaun a day is not enough to livge on, but 10,000 a month is OK? 10,000 a month is 330 a day, so why is 30 yuan the difference bewteen comort and starvation?

When entrepreneurship is learned in books and now in practice, you end up with a nation of sheep who all fight for a piece of the same dwindling opportunities and are incapable of creating their own. China is culturally unable to evolve into something more what it's leaders assign it to be. The country needs an Emperor to give it a goal. Democracy is not for all, at least, it's not for this China. No matter what the few who are open to the outside world may aspire to. Yet everything happening in China now is good news for Taiwan, even if a war is started as a distraction by the CCP. The spirit of the Taiwanese people would poison China if reunited, and the CCP knows it.

in terms of purchase power, 30 yuan can buy you a big mac meal in China, and their average monthly rent for 1 bed is 2000-3000 yuan. so you do the math. So it's about $150 in purchase power. It's actually decent money for them, they make more than Uber driver here
