China History: Deng Xiaoping on the Taiwan Question January 5, 1979 

On January 5, 1979, with eleven other reporters, I had the opportunity to meet and interview China's leader Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997). In this clip from the interview at the Great Hall of the People, I ask Vice Premier Deng about China's policy toward Taiwan and whether he would renounce the use of force in "reunification." The question - even more relevant in 2021. This video is for educational purposes only and is reconstructed from my audio tapes of the event edited together with limited video.
