You are in a difficult space right now. I have been to China many times, travelled to different parts and made friends. (I'm Australian) There is much to like. However when the China government behaves badly, and when many of the citizens follow that lead as permission or incentive to behave badly, they will. For the rest, such as yourself, it doesn't seem to matter how hard you may try, in many Western cultures, you will be ridiculed or penalised along with the worst elements. Which is sad and unfair. I get the impression you are living outside China. You probably have embraced what you think are the best parts of the new land. This is good. But it will also mean you are forever stuck in the middle culturally. You could not go back if you wanted to, because you have seen the world. You are not the person you were once. Yet sometimes you struggle for acceptance by some in the west too stupid to understand your situation. Your best way forward is to decide for yourself what its right, how you want to live and go for it. If others don't like it... it's their problem. Good luck!

Two stories remotely related to Chinese produce (in that both were meant to be consumed, and originated in China, even if I bought them in the Chinatown in New York. 1. I once bought a couple of packets of seeds for a kind of flowering vine called Hyacinth Bean in a Chinatown supermarket, to grow in my garden. When I opened them, most contained regular beans (the seeds looked totally different) and the one that did have a few had them mixed with regular ones in the same packet! (which meant the sellers not only trusted no one would notice the wrong seed in the packets, but wouldn't ask questions as to why a packet for one thing contained two totally different seeds!) 2. A bit scarier (in that the first would not cause anyone any actual harm). I bought a bag of senna seed (used as a laxative and, originally, thought someone had dropped an orange bead in there by accident. That is, until I opened the back and out rolled a rosary pea (a seed that is so poisonous that one would be WAY more than enough to kill someone if consumed. The seeds are safe intact, but since one would use the senna by dumping the seeds into boiling water (which would cause the seed to swell and leach its poison). and then drinking the liquid, if someone had missed the pea and drank the tea, death would probably be quite more or less certain. I am pretty used to the stuff that comes in from places like China mixed in with the produce, but something that would make it instantly deadly is more than a bit worrisome.)

Top suppliers of halal meat in circulation are Russia, Brazil, Argentina, US and Canada who then ship to Muslim communities all over the world. Most Westerners don't question where their meat comes from but Muslims are required to investigate and would not buy any meat from China. Meat coming out of any any country, especially China will not be considered halal unless it is slaughtered by a Muslim and the process meets halal standards.

As an American political junky, I've been following British politics religiously as a form of escapism (US politics=too depressing). But yeah, food and product safety standards can, and/or have, taken a hit. Firstly, the UK have limited infrastructure in place to inspect imports coming into the country. In the EU, shipping containers/products that comes from outside the single market, are inspected in whatever EU member country it first comes into, regardless of it's final destination. Thus, many British citizens believe, given almost all non-European imports arrive via Spain or France, that the products have been inspected and meet EU standards. Unfortunately, however, that's not true. Freight, whose final destination is the UK, outside the single market, are not inspected at all; but most citizens believe that EU inspections still occur.

Where I lived there were alot of asian supermarkets in the area and I wanted to try alot of different "instant" type of foods (don't ask me why lol) and I asked the lady at the counter (she was a Chinese immigrant) if they had any authentic Chinese instant noodle stuff and she told me, without missing a beat "You don't want those, stay with the Korean or Japanese or try the Thai ones. Chinese ones are bad." And it threw me for a loop for a second cause like...I didn't know what to do with that. I bought some instant Udon noodles bowls in the end. But after binge watching your videos and learning all this stuff about how things are done in China...that lady was really looking out for me!

Merchants colouring their food products to look fresh is not just a "China phenomenom " some less than reputable markets in the USA and Canada "date switch " by changing sell by or best by dates on products that are either nearing their true sell by / best by date or have actually gone past . I remember a person telling me that a very large chain store, that He used work at would put beef blood into the old hamburger and send it back through the grinder ,or they would grind liver up with old meat to make it look fresh .He also mentioned seeing maggots crawling around in some places on the floor where meat was being cut up . In other markets in the USA food that is not fresh is made into " daily specials " as prepared meals that can actually fetch a hefty price . It's unfortunately not uncommon for produce in the US to be waxed or coloured to look ripe or fresh and attractive . You've merely exposed this trick that happened to be going on in China ,whilst it's going on in other Nations too.

After 3 weeks in Japan recently its hard not to make comparisons with China. Pedestrian crossings? Cars stopped for me. Queues? People wait patiently and don't try to sneak in halfway. Toilets? Apart from being universally clean, Japanese toilets have toilet paper - for free, without it being stolen by grab-hags. Trains and public places where people are encouraged to be quiet - not yell into phones or yell at each other. Today's Japan is everything that China wants, but will never have, because Japanese people respect other Japanese people - and foreigners. 3 weeks in Japan? a pleasure. 3 weeks in China? @@jkayrichardson3366 I have travelled in China quite a lot, from one end to the other and have experienced the difference firsthand. China holds up its big infrastructure projects to compare itself with Japan, but it can't. Japan prides itself on getting things right. China holds up flawed examples as showcases, then conceals or disguises anything that looks like a problem, then pretends that its perfect. This attitude spearheaded by the communist government now permeates every aspect of Chinese society from top to bottom. When they are caught out irrefutably for cheating, the instant response in Chinese culture (and government) is to attack the credibility of whoever revealed their neglect, failure or corruption, rather than actually dealing with the problem. You will probably see this effect in subsequent comments by the Wumao, who cannot refute what I say here, but will attack me without knowing me, which will only serve to prove my point.

That family go several times to fill their plates and they put some of the food inside some plastic bags they bring from home to hide the food to take home and put inside their purses. They eat a lot and they take lots of food with them to their home. I was shock, at the time i was feeling pity think they dont have money to buy food. I was assuming the garlic is the famous "hardneck garlic". When I got home, I started cooking and noticed my fingers full of purple colors. LIttle I know, the garlic was grown in China and they sprayed with purple dye. So, be careful folks - stay away from white Chinese Garlic, they soaked them in chlorine that is why it's so white.

It's my understanding that they will sometimes dye fish here in the U.S. as well, and for the same reason, to make them look healthier or fresher. Salmon is the one example that comes to mind in particular, as farm raised salmon are often fed soy based food, which makes the meat look less red, unlike with wild caught salmon. Apparently, the proteins from the bugs and other things they eat make for a healthier and tastier fish.

Yes there are systems in place, but catching them isn't always easy. Here in the US., many food in the supermarket such as salmon, fruits, and breads are also color-added. I don't even have to mention those M&Ms, Skittles, and blue color food and drinks. Restaurants too secretly add colors to certain dishes to make them look more appealing. I used to work at restaurants and have seen it with my own eyes, even in a steak house with containers of red, orange, green, yellow food colorings in the corner. I just didn't have the gut to ask the chef what he would use those for. China has way more population than the US hence harder to control. But things have gotten a lot better in China in the recent 10-15 years since everyone has a camera phone to record and secretly post online. People knows where to go and trust. The things u see here on this channel are rare.

@@peterseth3296 - Yes, but OUR dyes and preservatives have been extensively tested and approved based on specific formulations. And we have third-party verifications to keep them in compliance. The reason we're fat isn't our food, it's lack of activity and exercise. Covid only made that worse with everything being delivered or streamed to your home. As to schools and military bases, of COURSE they're going to use frozen foods. You can't store and rotate enough fresh meats for hundreds of people each day otherwise. But what makes you think freezing food is somehow bad for you? It doesn't change the chemical composition of the food. And as long as you don't let it get freezer burned you're fine. But schools and the military by FAR use more canned goods than frozen. Vegetables, fruits, sauces, gravies, all canned. And sometimes the eggs are still powdered. I think you're just one of those people who wants everyone else to do things THEIR way because you feel it's the ONLY RIGHT WAY. But there's no such thing as perfection, so we'll have to make due with the next best thing.

I lived in Japan when Tiananmen square happened. US media avoided showing the actual horror that was filmed. Japanese did not hold back, so the newspaper front pages were full color gore. When I got back to the states a few months later I was baffled that no one really knew about it. Shortly after that GHWBush admin gave them something called 'most favored nation status'. Bush was wanting to open up china and chinas market to US corporate interests, so I assumed why the media semi-blackout. You got to hear that they had a protest crack down of sorts, and some guy stood in front of a tank for some reason. When America started getting flooded with chinese goods I always checked the origin of what I was buying. US made first, anywhere but China next. Then if the only option was chinese made I would ask myself "is this a real 'need', or just a 'want'?" If I really didnt NEED it then I didnt buy it. Eventually I had to give that up since everything on the planet is made in china. :(
