After a two-year gap, China has regained its position as India’s largest trading partner, surpassing the United States. According to the latest GTRI report, from FY19 to FY24, while trade with the US grew, increasing India's trade surplus, India's exports to China slightly decreased, and Chinese exports to India surged by almost 45%.
Does this mean the trade balance heavily favours China, with India facing a trade deficit of over $85 billion?
This trade growth persists despite India's trade and investment restrictions on China since the 2020 Galwan clashes. Indian politicians often discuss reducing reliance on Chinese imports and boosting domestic manufacturing. So, why can't India stop trading with China?
In this episode of Geeta's World, our host, Anna Priyadarshini, and the foreign affairs editor at India Today, TV Today Network, Geeta Mohan, discuss!

Just look at how Chinese companies are treated when they become successful, one would know why Chinese companies are pulling out from India. There is popular saying now spreading across China: "You can invest in India, but don't expect 1 cent to be taken out of India".

Kalapani was encroached from 1962 by |ndia using its military. In 1952, Nepal gave permission to temporarily place |ndian Armies in its Northern boundary foreseeing the dangers from the Chinese side. In the year of 1962, India made a bunker in Kalapani and placed its camp there, as the China-|ndia war broke out. At that time, the there were 18 |ndian camps including Kalapani, inside the Nepalese borders. After the war, when Nepal asked the |ndian side to remove its armies from all Nepalese regions, |ndia removed them from all the places except in Kalapani. And even till now, Kalapani is under the |ndian Military’s control. One step forward of the military encroachment, |ndia took a political step in encroachment as it added Kalapani to its border on the new map published by Survey of |ndia on November 2, 2019.

This is surprising for Indian media. Pragmatic and intelligent conversation. But there are still misinformation driving their thinking. China is a socialist state but its business are driven by capitalistic private citizens, not getting this right misinforms important economic and political decisions. China did not grew overnight, it took decades to reach where they are. It took decades of hiding your strength and biding your time, as it grew uninterrupted. India's problem is its destructive pride and distrust of everyone. And propensity to daydream instead of putting in the hard-work and humility to grew its strengths. And the US is a bad bet, it works with you as long as it needs you but attacks you the next day. US wants subservience, there is nothing altruistic about the US. Russia and China are more reliable partners who will works with you regardless of your politics. But don't expect a free lunch either, just a less intrusive relationship.

As soon as foreign companies investing in India started to show dominance in profits &/or market positions, you then strangle them with predatory and vulgar application of laws and enforcements. These MNCs include Ford, GM, BYD, Vodafone, Harley-Davidson, Carrefour, Henkel, Cairn Energy. And most recently, Telsa has just halted plan to invest in India......that is worth pondering.

Nobody can beat China supply chains. Not only they have biggest supply chains but also largest lucrative market. The high end supply chains will always in China. Only those low end are moving out. Most of the important composite materials are monopoly by China. The refine technologies also in China. They are in the innovation era now. They can build anything by themselves without foreign technologies. Even if foreign companies moving out, China have local companies to replace them. So the supply chains is still in China hand. They can build Chinese space station, high speed train, aircrafts carriers, destroyers, latest nuclear plant, magnificent humongous bridges, excellent highway, stealthy aircrafts, hypersonic missile, many types of rockets, leader in green energy, quantum technologies like chips, computer and satellite, super computers, amazing EV cars, heavy duty trucks , commercial passenger plane, helicopters, semiconductor chips which Huawei already can produce 5nm chips, mobile phone, etc. Many more to come. Like Mr Jacques said next China is still China. Remember that.

It gets to me that every time some Indian people starts talking geopolitics, they have to mention China. China is this and China is that blah blah. It is kind of funny listening to them and comparing themselves with China. Even though China may not be the main issue to be discussed. Even, at this conversation Anna said, when Indian elections come, China is one of the main subjects to discuss. It is obsession or what? I don't think Chinese people behave the same way towards India. is it so? When I was a lot younger, I was told by my father never to compare yourself. Just do well whatever you are getting into. Don't look around. Because when you compare yourself, especially if that some one is less advanced, you will feel like Superman, but when you compare yourself with someone more advanced, you will feel defeated. That is when you start excusing yourself.

India needs to cooperate with China to turn itself into a global manufacturing power, with seamless integration with global supply chain. It has long been China's stance that "Put the border disputes aside, let us cooperate on everything else. " An emerging power like India cannot let its development be kidnapped by border disputes. Be rational, realistic and pragmatic. Don't let ultra-nationalism make you hysterical. Look at Japan and S. Korea. These two East Asia neighbors can sit down for negotiations and cooperations, despite of their long time disputes over the sovereignty of the Liancourt Rocks in the sea between them. That is political wisdom and diplomatic maturity on full display. Other countries such as China and India can definitely learn from S. Korea and Japan to manage their difference on borders, LAC, or whatever, and develop their relationship for the benefit of the economy and people. The US, with its dirty "divide and conquer" tricks, doesn't want to see BRICS countries developing fast together. They'd rather see the two neighboring Asian giants, two of the biggest members of the Global South, fighting, hurting and weakening each other, in order to maintain America's hegemony in Indo-Pacific for as long as possible.

I find India anti-China bias so silly - not that it’s unwarranted but it’s not the best strategical attitude to have right now at such a critical time for Indian history. China has territory dispute with many SEA countries and yet trade continue to flourish and benefit these nations. Vietnam is always at odds with China but they, as well as SEA, pit China against US and reap the advantages. For India to paint China as a rival/competitor because of border issues is doing India a disservice. The only thing it benefits are those wanting to win elections by directing anger toward an “outsider”. Of course border issues is not an irrelevant issues, but unnaturally drum it up does not benefit the Indian people from an objective POV. India stand at a great inflection point in time where it would benefit tremendously by being friendly with both China and the US, which it can easily do because it has always has a non-alignment attitude. US love people to take side but China don’t care. If Indian government really care about the future of the nation and its people down the road, they would stop riling the public with anti-China sentiment. Instead it should tell its public to be neutral (neither China or US are friend or foe) and think objectively what Indian can do with China and the US that benefit Indian the most. It’s really a shame that the Indian media had created an anti-China bias amongst its populace to make a few bucks or help those in power to win “democratic” elections. And not focusing on the benefits of its motherland for the long term.

In 1980 both India and China had almost same sized economies, but after that China accelerated. India was a democratic country but followed a Socialistic economy, while China though a Communist country, adopted a Market economy. With a cheap labour and a huge market, China became attractive as an investment destination for Western Countries for manufacturing. Also Hong Kong and Taiwan played a huge part in attracting investments and technology. Also China took advantage of economies of scale, by building huge capacities of whatever it produced. By the time India opened its economy in 1990, China was already ahead of India as a low cost manufacturing hub for the world. India on the other hand was focusing more as a services hub especially IT related services. Unfortunately services sector could not provide employment to majority of the population.

@@fatdoi003 The western multinationals went to China at the time because of their weak labour laws, weak environmental laws, mass pool of cheap labour they could pay dollar a day wages to And yes weak IP laws that went along with it In exchange the western multinationals traded knowledge and investment This was nothing new, the west goes to 3rd world or developing nation takes advantages of this country until the locals complain about wages, pollution, or environmental damages. Western multinationals pick up and run for it. I would argue yes they expected the Chinese to buy 1 billion toothbrushes and 2 billion socks But they didn’t expect them to enrich themselves My evidence is even before the west pushed for Chinese WTO inclusion the Top of the food chain 1%ters and their TooBigTooFail Investment Banks worked out the worst deal ever for themselves Where these TooBigTooFail Investments Banks got a 33% interest in a “Joint Venture Chinese Investment Banking Subsidiary.” Where the Chinese Bank got a 67% Difference is the Chinese didn’t complain they put up with those dollar a day wages making 22 times less than what an average American worker made. Yet saved 30% of those wages over 30 plus years. Indirectly loaning those saving to those Americans so they could spend their savings and borrow to spend some more. While the Chinese invested or made a business with their savings Where the Chinese lowered their standards of living while the Americans were able to raise their standards of living with those cheaper goods If anything the Chinese were dragging their feet on the TRIPS agreement under the WTO….specifically regarding developing countries These days while the Chinese lead the world in 37 of 44 critical technologies of the future The train or thought is to strengthen Chinese IP or decouple

The whole Indian society has a slave mentality. India has a structural problem and needs to reform its bureaucratic processes, land bills, farm bills, and law and order liberalization. Once these basic issues are addressed, then we can talk about cooperation with other countries. Political parties are winning elections with corrupt and criminal electorates. If politics is more profitable than innovation, then the country is destined to die.

India is a superpower in a hurry as its time hasn't come yet. Instead of beefing up, it is too obsessed with historical baggage and emotional, too. Every one can stop trading with China. But the question is at what cost? Trade boosts GDP. China still trades with the US, eventhough China has reduced the US from #1 trading partner to #4, due to a very hostile US. China does not reduce trade with the US. But China does it through increasing trade with ASEAN, EU and Japan & Korea. And now China is focusing on the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and the Central Asia. This way, China can continue to dominate the world on real GDP (PPP price adjusted) since 2017.
