China officially unveiled a superheavy rocket development roadmap during China Space Day 2023, including a Starship-like launch vehicle. In this episode, we do a deep dive into what this rocket looks like, how it compares to SpaceX's Starship, and how this new Chinese rocket plays a role in the country's overall space program.

I love these videos. It is sometimes hard to tell, which Chinese new rocket concept are actively under development, and which are just ideas. As far as learning from SpaceX, there is nothing wrong with following a successful trend. China would still have to develop their own engines and rocket architecture but if the basic concepts work for SpaceX, then at least the direction of development is clearer.
@twlamSG
@twlamSG Год назад
Some time the Chinese are too pragmatic, why reinvent the wheel? They can improve on what works and save a large part of the invention process. Of course many people will say they copied it, but you cannot copy engines if you developed it yourself. But the west will continue to accuse and look down on them but the Chinese won't be bothered. Very soon, they will be leading many of the innovation.

Starship is the equivalent of trains for mankind's space travel. It allows us to move a massive amount of cargo into LEO. With starships, building large projects in LEO, such as a space factory or a solar station in LEO, will become possible. But it looks like the US will be the first country to utilize "space trains" since I believe SpaceX's Starship should be fully matured before 2033s. And the US could definitely monopolize the "space train" business.

@fdjw88
@fdjw88 Год назад
@@edwinvargas7969 China won't have a similar timeline because even the design for China's heavy-lift rocket is not finalized. China will most likely focus on finishing its manned moon mission first, which is scheduled around the 2030s. And China's moon mission will be using single-use rockets. This means China won't have reusable spacecraft like the Starship until late 2030 at the earliest, a more realistic timeline would be somewhere around the 2040s.

First World nations ? 🤔 Aaaah wait you mean us western nations with all our huge national debts and half of our inhabitants living under the poverty line. Meanwhile in a second World nation like you China have no national debts but they only make huge profits. Wealth that the entire nation profits from (Socialisme) and not only a few like over here in the west. This is far less expensive than it would be for the US. The US would need to make more debts on their already negative saldo from $ 34 trillion, but for China this is just "small change", and money that they do have. Unlike the US China can keep up it's own pants, while our American friens are living on borrowed money from Europe, the Arab nations, Japan and China.

I find it hard to believe the YF-130 will be mothballed and China would cede reusable superheavy launch capability to the US for 20 years. I'm not so much concerned with deep space exploration as I am with putting up *mass* into LEO. I expect there to be intermediate variants of the Long March 9 before the final form discussed here, perhaps with a single-chamber variant of the YF-130. An ORSC kerolox engine is not as reusable as a FFSC methalox engine, but it's still more than adequate.

Excellent coverage. Love the style and format your present content. Very interesting and easy to follow. The Long March 9 first stage booster is the interesting component, particularly motor development. All the other stage options for the LM9 concept will evolve as the global space race and China's strategy, plans evolve. The Long March 10 is destined to support China's lunar, and crewed lunar missions. Having a reusable booster is key to economically increasing mass lift capability to LEO. The ability to lift significant mass to LEO is key for anything basic robotic missions beyond LEO. In mid-2023 what is significant is the number of new rocket designs experiencing delays. ESA's Ariane 6 is delayed, as is ULA Vulcan, and a number of other smaller rockets. Japan's H3 rocket experienced an upper stage failure on its maiden launch, as did Zhuque-2 (MethLOX). Only mentioning, as this demonstrates how hard it is to get new launch vehicles to the operational stage. Note, no MethLOX fuelled booster has yet to launch a payload to LEO. The next 5 years are going to be very exciting in terms of new launch vehicles, from many providers within China and from around the globe.

The biggest problem is that for a nation like China, like the US to get to the Moon and achieve their missions they need a big, powerful rocket that is not just capable of transporting basic equipment but also big, heavy payloads. For example if you want to built a space station there you can't gete away with a rocket that is incapable of transporting such a heavy payloaad there. The problem for FH and the future LM10 is that they are powerful enough to do that in LEO but not to the moon. Starship on the other hand is capable of doing that as it has a massive payload capacity. Staarship HLS will be capable of transporting between 100 and 200 tons to the Moon. Effectively this means that such sustem will be capable of transporting ISS'ss weight in between 3 and 5 launches. Or in the case of the Chinese space station within just one mission. Now ofc we have other factors here as will there be enough space to fit a whole space station but you get the point. It would be easily done.

At present, only China and the United States have a clear mission to land on the moon, and they also have the demand for heavy-duty rockets. The United States is clearly ahead, which is understandable. You must know that when the United States and the Soviet Union were competing to land on the moon, we were still building our own initial aerospace business. Even 30 years ago, if you went back to that time and asked a Chinese that China could compete with the United States to land on the moon in the future, everyone would laugh at you as a lunatic. But now China's Chang'e Project and the Artemis Project in the United States are often compared, even though the specific goals of the two projects are not the same. The similarity of appearance does not mean copying and pasting. For example, do they use the same engine in the core, or do they use the same engine in the methane engine? The appearance of ordinary cars is similar, and they all use gasoline. Is that the same? It can only be said that if we pursue the same concept, then convergent evolution is also of course, let alone the United States, which is undoubtedly a pioneer in this field. Although China has made rapid progress in recent years, it is clearly still a latecomer. In addition, Chinese officials are often lazy to use ready-made materials when making PPT, which is also often complained about by Chinese space enthusiasts. So I wouldn't be surprised if the future design of CZ-9 changes again. It has not been finalized yet
@christianmoore7932

@rbrtck

The Falcon 9 launches most of the world's mass into orbit with tremendous reliability--more mass per year than every other rocket combined, including all of China's. Doesn't that give SpaceX any credibility? The Starship is still being developed, so it cannot be compared until its development is complete. It is also flying before it has been fully developed, which is highly unusual, so there might be multiple failures before they get it right, but this kind of development process actually speeds up development. By flying early and allowing themselves to learn by failing, SpaceX might actually have a chance of making or getting close to their goal of finishing by the end of 2025. Without gathering actual flight data, the process would take years longer.

@@jantjarks7946 NASA being an US government agency had worked like this since its inception, The US government owns the hardware via NASA including Saturn V(Apollo) and now the SLS rockets.
