This video got me thinking about Teochew identity, which I haven't thought about since I was a kid - younger than 10 years old. I'm 32 now, for some context. My great-grandma, who was from Chao Zhou province, baby-sat me for years and we spoke Teochew to each other. But when she died, so did my ability to speak it. And I was too young to have developed any sense of cultural identity. So now, after a quarter century of zero Teochew awareness, hearing Olivia, Ie and the Prince speak it triggered these weird, partial-flashbacks. Like what they were saying sounded familiar but the meaning was just beyond my grasp. Still though, it was an unexpected wake-up call and reminded me after all these years that hey, this is a part of who I am. Not what I was expecting when I clicked on the video. Thanks for that :)

It feels really nice hearing teochew youtubers speak teochew because not a lot of people speak it nowadays. I remember struggling with my identity because I couldn't relate to people who spoke Canto or Mandarin, but couldn't really identify myself as a Vietnamese person, even though my family speaks it fluently. Thank you for uploading this!

Funny how I'm fully Teochew (Chinese) yet my parents can speak vietnamese fluently, as they're from Vietnam. As the video mentioned. I can only understand conversations in Vietnamese. I wish I knew more. So many of my friends think i'm Viet though. LOL.

Amanda Ly Yea, I felt the same way. My parents watched a lot of chinese film when I was a kid and I somehow learned a little bit of Cantonese and Mandarin but I could never really have a full conversation with anyone. I can't even speak an ounce of vietnamese even though my parents are born there. Its sad theres not many of us because the language does die because of that.

KaidenT133 I got a question for you Kaiden, isn't Chao Zhou part of the eastern side of Guangdong , which is super far from Vietnam,Thailand and the other small Asian countries. So are ChaoZhou people Cantonese or they Vietnamese and etc. Or Vietnamese, Thailand,Laos and etc are Cantonese related?

bob burger my family came from vietnam and how to speak both vietnamese and teochew language. The story is that my grandma who was born and raised in southern china (i think hongkong) and migrated to vietnam. Eventually she met my grandfather, a Vietnamese man, and got married, having 8 children and lived south. Then eventually the war in Vietnam was nearing the city or town they lived in so the family got on a boat to america to escape the chaos. And today, our family lives in the U.S.A living good lives.

I'm a Teochew speaker from Connecticut and I love that fact that you guys are bringing light to this subgrouping of Chinese! I visited Shantou (where the language originated from) and it was incredible to see/hear where the language came from. I have met Teochew speakers in Bangkok and Paris...we're all out there! Don't be afraid to speak Teochew!

I'm Thai and live in Thailand but my grandmother is a half-Chiu Chow so that makes me 12.5% chiu chow. I've never learned to speak Chiu Chow because my great grandpa passed away when my grandma was like 3 months old, although my grandma taught me how to count 1-8 in Chiu Chow and I thought chinese people spoke Chiu Chow when I was younger but turned out there are a lot of dialog in Chinese. Anyway just wanted to say I can relate to this video more than the Thai food one that you did lol because I grew up eating these food similar to the one you have in the video because there are a lot of Chiu Chow people in Thailand. The way he calls kidney in Chiu Chow makes me so excited because we use that in Thai too XD

ammi tious its kind of pity that the new generation of Thai -Teochew descendents can't speak Teo chew or any other chinese dialects.however,most of the culture and teochew food still being kept. which has been developed as Thai-Chinese style. I came from Teochew and live in BKK for 9 yrs.Thailand is my 2nd hometown

I'm from Hong Kong but my grandfather is from Chiu Chow on my father's side so I am of Chiu Chow descendant :) We escaped to HK during the cultural revolution, most of HK also comes from the surrounding regions because of Mao's Communist Rule during the 40s and 50s

Wow! it's really great to finally see u guys doing vids about Teochew culture. It is a subculture of Minnan which settles in Fujian Province, yet it has a great influence on many of the Chinese culture. The reason why u don't get to see many Teochew ppl in north America is because, we don't usually go that far away from home, so many just went south to Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Holy crap...I grew up thinking this was Vietnamese food. I always get these at Chinese/Vietnamese restaurants. i love Mi chau Chao kho (pretty sure I spelled it wrong). I know we have hieu tieu (which looks like what you're eating) but I know that has Cambodian influences.

I'm chiu chow, but unfortunately, I lost the language. My grandparents live in VN and when I was little, I used to live with them and was fluent. Ever since I moved back to the US, no one in my family speaks it, it was only Vietnamese. :\

bob burger Well from my understanding we are min-chinese, so han natural southerners. History says the old ass ancestors migrated from the central lands to the south... I think due to war and conflict there was a massive diaspora akin to the Jewish? I guess there was the opium wars, qing upheaval, revolution, sino-jap, ww2 everyone moved elsewhere - vietnam, cambodia, thailand, indonesia, malaysia, singapore? Then the teo chew people assimilated into the communities or carved their own part and then became a part with cultural mingling/marriages. Then there's the view I think from being merchants they set up shop elsewhere and the communities grew over time pls correct me if i missed out on other things people Very strong cultural identity that differs from Cantonese/Hakka/Viet

I'm Viet-Chiu Chow (like many people are) and it's so lonely here lol no one really knows about Chiu Chow, so I just state simply that I'm half Chinese and let them assume whatever. I think there's like 5 people who speaks this language at my uni that has a roll of 40,000 students :/

You are correct. Most chiuchow food in the USA is filtered through Vietnam...The most legit and original Teochew food can not be found in USA

Chiu Chow is a very interesting culture! You can hear both the Cantonese and Vietnamese influence on pronunciation and there are certain tidbits of Vietnamese I could pick up! Another great video!

The dishes looked great. It would be cool if you guys did a poutine video. I would recommend "The Kroft" in Anaheim Packing District as they have great poutine and sandwiches.

Representing my peep!! My parents are from Cambodia, but my grandparents are from China. So that makes me Chiu-Chow Cambodian! Gaginang!! =D I also noticed you guys ate at the Kim Kee Noodle Cafe in the 626 area on Valley Blvd. I go there all there all the time!! I love that place!
