Choosing the right money-making schedule in small engine repair depends on where you fall within the five levels of involvement, ranging from basic repairs to running a full-time shop. At the foundational level, you might start with basic repairs for family and friends. This stage involves learning the ropes and gaining confidence without the pressure of generating significant income. It’s an excellent way to test your interest and skills, working at your own pace and on your schedule.
The next level is DIY repairs, where you fix your own equipment and perhaps a few for neighbors. This is more time-intensive and offers opportunities to save money on repairs while honing your skills. As you gain expertise, you might move to the third level-starting a lawn care business. Here, the repair skills become crucial as maintaining your equipment efficiently impacts your business's profitability.
At the fourth level, you start offering repair services on nights and weekends to build a customer base. This phase requires more commitment, as you balance your primary job with growing a side business. Finally, the fifth level involves running a full-time small engine repair shop. At this stage, you need a structured schedule to manage daily operations, serve a steady stream of customers, and ensure a sustainable income. Choosing the right schedule-daily, weekly, or monthly-depends on your current involvement level and your long-term business goals, allowing you to scale your efforts effectively as you progress.

Its a touchy subject, our local dealer that sells and services many big brands are slow work wise, they had to almost close down their second location as far as service and transfer those mechanics to the other location. The same shop tuned in some of their techs for doing work on the side. This dealer was also not happy with a nearby independant shop as they felt he was taking some of their business. So in that regard you have to be careful doing "side" work for cash without a real business. You just need to piss off the wrong people to get someone showing up at your door. Personally, I sell some parts to one guy that probably shouldn't be working on other peoples stuff. My own brother in law who is a mechanic called me this week asking advice on buying a carburetor. I was honest with him, but in the back of my mind I'm thinking why not just send the guy to me? Its a delicate situation if its a business you can get into with no formal education, schooling and just RU-vid certified. Depends on your province or state. Either way, its not a hobby if you are making money.

In this economy What use to be the way we did business has changed. Its time to tighten the belt a bit and that might also be layoffs of employees till it gets better. What I am seeing is less disposable income from the middle class and them having to choose to do their own service instead of us because they cannot afford too.

@@northernnewyorkparts Yes, and while not my bread and butter, more battery trimmers and such will mean less work. I did get a customer drop off a battery push mower yesterday, and I fixed one last year, but overall the reliability is high, and the usual carb cleanings will be less with more people going electric. The middle class is getting less comfortable or slipping down t close to the lower class. Seems more like you are very comfortable money wise or you are feeling pinch, the in between is dissapearing.
