In this special episode of Chop & Brew, we visit long-time homebrewer P. Berry Dove and hang out while he brews his 1,000th batch of homebrew. P. Berry tells about his experiences in a hobby that has spanned more than 40 years including why he prefers partial mash brewing, bottling his beer and keeping the beers fairly boozy. Grab a pint, sit back and enjoy! [Original postdate: October 2, 2014]

Great job Chip. And thanks to the contributors. It's cool to learn there is some musician/bread maker/crazy brewer dude making hundreds of batches of beer somewhere and no one knows about it. Until now. Great idea to show a utility brewer and how he does it. Might have been fun to see his bottling process but you would have had to stay a whole week. :)

One of the best Tee's I've ever seen and can be applied to a lot of things in life. Nice ep! "Born to brew forced to work."

Oh, damn, I like this guy. He brews like I cook, when cooking at home. I do not know what I am going to make until I get started Might change my mind, part way through, depending on what it is. There does seem to be a connection between those two archetypical human activities, bread making and beer brewing. Of course, both use the same basic ingredients, grains, water, and yeast. Used in very different ways. I like this fellow's attitude and I hope he is still at it. We would be pals if we lived in the same area.

Wow! One of the neatest things ever. Reminds me of my dad. I found one of his recipes for an oatmeal stout and brewed it while he was in a nursing home. On the day he died I found out I won a medal for it at a pretty big competition in Dallas.

Yeah, and it's pretty cool that now my 6 year old son helps me brew it. Just another example of how beer brings people together.

Without having looked back at the video - I think it's something like: Batch # / Date / Name / Ingredients / OG / FG / ABV / Bottling Date / Tasting Notes

@ChopAndBrew

thorhale I would love to make it to LA. Maybe during the winter months, of course! I have asked Drew about maybe coming out to do an episode with the Falcons (they just had their big 4-0 as well!), but never really heard back from him about the idea. I'm sure he's slammed with his/Denny's book about to come out.

seem you know the club better than I. It would be a good chance to get introduced! I met them all once some time back when I tagged along on a beer trip they put together heading south. going to be looking in to that book as well. keep me posted brotha!

Last I checked with him (in April 2020) P. Berry was Batch #1215. He hadn't been on his regular brewing schedule for for bit because he'd just moved and was still getting things set up. I'll check in again and see how he's doing.

Per P. Berry 11/25/18 -- sounds like things are going well for Mr. P. Berry = = = = = = Happy Holidays, Chip! Was just wondering how you were doing. Everything is great here in Texas. I retired from AHS two years ago and moved to the country away from all the city hustle and bustle. I'm still brewing on, up to batch 1172, staying with Belgian Pale Ales and Pilsners. Good to here from you, hope you and your family are doing well.
