Early Chopin Variations, some of those works that are often overlooked (except Op. 2), but they filled with lyricism and sometimes joy. One of them opened new way of composing (like Sourvenir de Paganini), another in a manner not typical for Chopin not saturated musically.
Variations Brilliante Op. 12 - Ashkenazy`s performance is jaw-dropping with delicate lyricis and such power, when it needs. The theme is taken from rondo "Je vends des scapularies" from opera Lucovic.

Variations sur un air national allemand - According to Oskar Kolberg, Chopin wrote this variations as young, at the request to A Madame Sowinska, in a few quarters of an hour. The exact date of writting is unknown, but presumably it`s 1824. Compared to variations Op.2 on "La ci darem la mano", in which Chopin deployed a whole treasure trove of those tools and techniques that at that time had, this variations has more faded musically filling, much more manerred and simple.

15:45 - Souvenir de Paganini - The progenitor of future Berceuse, a delicate melody with different decorations: thirds, triplets, sixths, fast passages and unchanging accompaniment, we've already seen this somewhere, haven't we? Zilbertstein wth her fleeting touch makes this piece full of joy and lightness.
This piece was written in 1829 under the impression that Paganini's concerts in Warsaw made on Chopin. It`s variations on theme "Carnival of Venice" which Paganini used in his Op. 10 "Le Carnaval de Vinise".
20:06 - Variation No.6 From "Hexameron" - Hexameron is a rare case (if not the only one) when such giants as Liszt, Chopin, Thalberg, etc. cooperated. Chopin variations uses at least half as many notes as others, but remains as lyrical semi-masterpiece of miniature writting.
