Given how it all turned out, it was quite sad to see him talk about Hollywood as being his "fantasy,” and even sadder that he knew that it wouldn’t work out even then. He and John Woo (and many other gifted Chinese filmmakers) deserved so much better than what the American film industry gave them.

Yun Fat is filled with extreme talent. Him and Tony Leung are the two most gifted actors in Hong Kong. The likes of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung can't compare to their level of acting without disrespect.

Sammo is a wonderful actor, when given chance. Jackie is a good actor, again when given chance. Chow, Ti Lung, both Tony Leung (Chiu Wai & Kar Fai), Francis Ng (seriously underrated), Simon Yam (again in the right film) are HKs best ever.

ABT is one of my favorite movies. The sequel was a great action movie and the soundtrack is solid, even if it shouldn't be compared to the original. City on fire was great too
@onionsan7688
@onionsan7688 6 лет назад
Absolutely. Two of my most watched films in my whole Asian collection "this fackin fried rice stinnks!" "i wanna talk to your greasy manager!" lol. I like the soundtracks too. There is one track in particular from the second film as they gear up for the final showdown, it sounds a bit synth, i found it years ago somewhere on youtube, but lost it, anyone know the name? City on fire, i've only seen it once years ago, but i remember being surprised how much Tarintino ripped it off with Reservoir Dogs. This is going to sound odd, but did Chows gf in the film have hairy armpits? If it was this film, i found that really jarring lol.
@AsianTheDomination

I just looked for the tracklist. Is this it? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kuu7nFjjK1E.html According to one of the comments its hard to find because it was originally made for a french movie.Still looking for that track that plays in the nightclub in the first movie though, where kit confronts ho and takes him outside. In answer to your second question I think you're right, but what always stood out to me is how often someone was smoking. Almost every shot.
@onionsan7688
@onionsan7688 6 лет назад
That's not the track, but thanks anyway. I actually found the track, it's called Operation Commenced. If anyone is interested ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QscsA8jg9bE.html I really cant remember much about City on Fire, but i think smoking in China is kinda cultural, and viewed as a trendy thing.

A Better Tomorrow 1 had some very iconic moments same as A Better Tomorrow 2. But I wouldn't say its underrated it just suffers from sequelitis that really started too show when they resurrected Chow Yun Fat's Character as his own identical twin brother. I genuinely like a Better Tomorrow 2 but its cracks start too show it as a unnecessary sequel that was made to ride on the popularity of the first movie.

it also had the mistake of stacking too many tragedies back to back. I was just so de-sensitized by the time the deaths that actually mattered happened. "My family got wiped out. I'll just restart here and...oh they got wiped out too. Okay, one more time...aaaaand everyone's dead." The plotlines felt so disjointed until halfway through the movie when the main cast finally assembles.

Among ABT trilogy, the first is still the best movie. 2nd is kinda strange, the drama it is supposed to support the movie plot never worked. The 3rd movie is very good, specially if you understand the context ot the fall of Saigon. The movie doesn't explain much of this context. However, The Killer and Hard Boiled will always be my favorite movies from this fantastic duo. (I know ABT 3 is not John Woo's)

I think he flat out dislikes both films in general. He hated replaying the same role, probably because of how weak of an excuse it was that Mark conveniently has an identical twin brother that is never referenced at all in the first film. It lessens the heroic impact of the first film imo, that's probably why. Then he goes on about how successful ABT was and how they immediately wanted to jump back on the coat tails to make much more money, what's understandable. So maybe he views it as more of a cash grab than anything. Lastly he just states at the end "actually i don't like part two or part three" in pretty clear context lol.

@@onionsan7688 It doesn't really matter what he thinks or thought of it. I watched A Better Tomorrow before the original and I love both of them equally. The third one was bad because of Woo and Hark not getting along during part 2. So Woo used the original script which became Bullet in the Head and Hark made ABT 3. Hark is a good director but he missed the mark completely. It didn't feel like he put much effort into it. There are quite a few actors who don't like the movies they have been in because they usually refer to the experience they had making it. And often this leads them to be very biased. I wonder if he actually has watched the films.

ABT2 actually has BETTER ACTING and a MORE CREDIBLE STORY arc. ABT1's story is really rather low on credibility -- while the motivations of the major protagonists and antagonists are clear, the reason they took the specific actions they took are very much impractical, illogical, unexplained or unexplainable. There is quite a bit of "over acting" especially by Leslie Cheung. All in all the individual scenes looked much better than when you watch the whole thing from beginning to end.`

Chow Yun Fat sucked in Hollywood because he is UNABLE to convey the depth of character and drama in his English movies. He wasn't able to do that because his ENGLISH SUCKED. Regardless, even a low budget Hollywood production pays 100 times better than Hong Kong productions. In the 80s and 90s, top HK TV and Movies actors make 20-30 movies and TV series a year. They typically have 5-6 in photography during the same week. And, a successful movie would make maybe $5M USD worldwide and the actor may get a few hundred thousand dollars.
