CHR TOWER PART 1
In this video I report the first steps to build the CHR Towers. Intro, Main Idea, Goals, Test Boxes, FRD and ZMA files extraction, Material Selection.
The CHR Towers are a fantastic pair of powerful audio, low bass, high quality speakers. Made in Walnut Hardwood mixed with Euro-Ply and veneer this design relies on the Markaudio CHR-90 Full-range and the SB Acoustics SB15MFC30-8 Woofer. This is a two way speaker box that impresses by its power, SPL and High Fidelity performance, even using 5" woofer drivers and full-range drivers.

How to make the best speakers I heard: Make speakers similar to the speakers in this video...but don't have the FR driver in the box (and obviously you will have to make another crossover). Have the FR driver on top of the box @ about 45°. You can experiment with the angle. And here is a great option... Get rid of the dust cap so there are no enclosed air spaces on the FR driver (or buy phase plug drivers, with the stationary phase plug). Now, w ith a razer blade or SHARP hobby knife, slit the cone like 8 mm long and right through, all around, with 4mm gaps that are not cut. Do it about 5mm out from the start of the cone near the center. Repeat on the dust cap (if you refuse to get rid of it). For the best treble you ever heard! Mine are $9 FR drivers 5" diameter and they SPARKLE with this mod! They are dipole with the cleanest med you heard! You can blend the med from the woofer to the FR driver so it won't sound "lean". You can control the lean and round sound ratio to get great medrange! If you do all of this, you might have a dipole heaven, holographic soundstage off the scale (like I have).They sound like panel speakers. 😅

Hey brother, l just stumbled across this channel and am really enjoying it! I've been building speakers on and off since the early 2000's and am ready for my next project. I learned my way into DIY via the guidance of guys like Paul Carmody and Jeff Bagby. I played with full range speakers early on and was just so disappointed with the outcome. I would always have major spikes anywhere between 800Hz to 3KHz that just couldn't be tamed regardless of how much filter you threw at it. It looks like technology has come a long way. If you're ready to share plans I'd love to make this my next project. I look forward to hearing from you! I'll do you proud!

Modular construction Fruit Cake, like Wilson audio. Avoid the bass drivers shaking the Mark driver around, especially laterally. Minimize Doppler, intermod, etc. I use polypropylene bearings. Can have a dramatic effect on spatial behavior. Put an accelerometer next to the Mark 9 on this build and witness the horrifying results.

The silver flute are probably the better driver in terms of low-end performance with a natural timbre. Maybe if you decide to revisit this theme again in the future, you can see how those work for you. I also just think that their satin, silvery-grey look is very sophisticated. Dayton Audio's Esoteric and Epique lines of speaker drivers are both beautiful and impressive in quality and performance. A shame they're quite pricey and blow the budget.

@@sonnoradesign They feature cast aluminum baskets and a treated paper and wool cone. Their sound quality is good and trends to the warm side and they have an impressive operating frequency range, particularly in the low end. Cross them over a little bit low, around 2kHz and you'll avoid any breakup or beaming entirely, though they can be crossed over higher if you require it. I'd recommend trying to design around the 8" model both for the improved bass response, but also because it will require less effort to find comparably sensitive tweeters. If I remember correctly, the 8" driver is around 91dB, which is right in line with most commonly available tweeters and won't require much work in the crossover to balance the sensitivity. I find that they pair particularly well with silk tweeters, with my personal preference being for the dual ring radiator ones from VIFA or Peerless, but conventional silk dome tweeters are also perfectly fine. I would avoid titanium dome tweeters, and probably aluminum dome tweeters as well. AMT tweeters are also not ideally suited for the same reason: they're too crisp and sharp for the warmth of those woofers, so they're not a great match. Beryllium or ceramic dome tweeters are probably acceptable, as they have fewer resonance problems, but silk is really where it's at if you want the best bang for your buck. Check AliExpress for VIFA XT25 and you'll get quite a good selection with some being very reasonably priced for a pair with oversized magnets.
@sonnoradesign
@sonnoradesign Год назад
@@mndlessdrwer hey! That sounds good. I really have to give those a try. People seem to like it a lot! I have a couple of pairs of the peerless XT25. I really like them and used it before. Maybe a MTM with 2 x 8”?! I’ll add to the most desire project list. Hehe
@mndlessdrwer
@mndlessdrwer Год назад
@@sonnoradesign That seems like a good way to build some pretty epic home theater towers. You really can't get the effortless impact you need from home theater speakers without raw volumetric displacement and a pair of 8" woofers per tower is a great entry point into that level of air movement. Should do great with music as well, though you'll have to do a little bit of tuning work to balance the SPL of the woofers and the single tweeter. A 4 ohm neodymium XT25 and a pair of 8ohm Silver Flute 8" woofers should be close enough that it won't require much extra attenuation. Obviously it'll be up to you at the end, since you have way more experience than I do at designing speaker and crossover networks. I would try to see if a rear-ported design could be avoided unless you have the space to really pull them out from the rear wall, since they're going to move quite a good amount of air through their ports and the room gain from speaker placement should be rather exaggerated.
@sonnoradesign
@sonnoradesign Год назад
@@mndlessdrwer sounds good! The problem is always integrating the tweeter with large drivers because of the early cone break up. But I’d thought about an 8” project. I really like speakers that move a lot of air!

Hey my friend. I was looking at building tmm and mtm and I was reading about logging or combing with having the same drivers at the same frequency and I was wondering how you got rid of the issue
@sonnoradesign
@sonnoradesign Год назад
Hey There! It might happen. I usually work on the crossovers to check the phase and possible cancelling. I’m working on a new crossover for those towers for a more flat response. If they play without the crossovers the combing is visible on the graph and this configuration is challenging cause the drivers are similar and play the same frequency. I might post the new crossovers soon. Let me know if you need help with those.
