The NCAA has been attacked time and time again, but I think they actually could be on some trouble here and that's the first time I am saying that. There is a real opportunity here for someone to create and alternative league *cough* NBA *cough* and slowly chip away at the amount of players that go to the NCAA over the next 5-10 years. Talked about this on my channel today.

The NCAA doesn't need to pay the kids. They simply need to allow the kids to receive payment from anyone who wants to pay them for anything. There is no good reason why a video game developer can't pay college athletes to use their likeness in a game. There's no reason a college athlete should be prohibited from getting paid to be in a commercial and they should definitely get a game check for every televised game. The problem with having the NCAA pay them is that the NCAA would likely not offer full ride scholarships to students who decide b to get paid and leaving more of your expenses up to you to cover. When players get in trouble the schools will be less likely to provide lawyers. You'll need your own health insurance and whatever expenses schools normally cover they'd probably cover significantly less if they were paying you and letting you get paid outside of school

How to fix the system (my opinion) 1. Let them go pro after high school or sign a contract with a G-League team. 2. If they don't wanna change the rule, then pay them based on their ranking. 5 star gets 500,000, 4 star gets 400,000 etc.. 2. Every NBA team needs a G-League affiliate. 3. Raise the salary of the G-League
@TheSweetswed

Who is paying to go see G-League games though ?? I agree to a point but all the Stadiums and Fan bases are already there and College is WAY bigger than Minor League Baseball. Your suggesting Minor League baseball essentially. Which isn't bad but does not generate the same fans as College sports

So nice to see Nick agreeing that I as a 1%er should get a tax cut just like everyone else. This is on the NBA. Oh lastly it would be unfair in the sense that some schools would be more popular and have more money or endorsements which means most likely more kids would go there, especially the kids that are good. Where that creates issues is unfair competition. Certain schools will always prosper because they will always have the best teams. Ala Alabama Crimson Tide. I think it's boring having no competition and seeing the same teams prosper. And that's what boosters and paid athletes can create. However I still don't see a major issue. If they can find a way around that then it'd be amazing.

@TheTitoMosquito

Why not fully fund the total amount of a scholarship for a student as soon as it is awarded and can be withdrawn by the student if they leave early for the pro league? This could be a hedge against injury and security for an athlete's long term future as well. Example. I am awarded a full scholarship for basketball as a 5 star athlete by Syracuse University. The total value would be 5 years @current tuition plus room and board with an auto adjustment to fully fund if any cost rises. This award is placed in an escrow account in the student's name and can be accessed solely for paying for the cost of the educational costs. If after playing for 2 years, the players elects to enter the draft, the remaining balance is then available to withdraw by the athlete as compensation for time played. If a player is injured during his time on the team and cannot return, the educational needs are still met. The only time the school can recoup money from escrow is if a player willingly quits the team, flunks out of school, or has a morality clause violation that results in a conviction. Thoughts?

Vader's Brigade players want to provide for their families while they are in school. Bills are due monthly.
@TheTitoMosquito
@TheTitoMosquito 6 лет назад
Aaron Mcvay I understand that notion, but being a collegiate athlete doesn't afford kids the tools to provide like a parent/husband/wife. In the current system, the schools should be providing all needs for an athlete while attending school, academically. These kids didn't make poor life decisions to have their families in a less than favorable environment, the parents did that.
@AB-jj3em
@AB-jj3em 6 лет назад
Vader's Brigade but there are college students all around campus that have full time jobs, parents, children, businesses, bills, etc, etc. Every professon in America has those type of people. College athletes would also like to be able to earn a living for their families. Who says being a college athlete isn't built for that lifestyle?
@TheTitoMosquito
@TheTitoMosquito 6 лет назад
Aaron Mcvay Again, I understand that notion. However, that's not our current system. I don't know you or your story, but I had the benefit of athletic scholarships for XC. I was covered for tuition, room, board, shoes, and athletic needs. Per diem for away meets were covered when traveling and 23 meal plan while on campus. I understand that track and field doesn't generate money for the athletic department, but it never crossed my mind to make a job out of doing the thing they are covering my education for my presence on campus. You can't have it both ways. Either draw a salary and pay your way through college or attend and receive your educational and living needs met while an athlete. This is like working for Apple, drawing a salary to develop new technology and then demanding royalties for technology developed.
@AB-jj3em
@AB-jj3em 6 лет назад
Vader's Brigade I'm aware that its not the current system. I think the current system needs to be changed. And thats not a fair analogy. A fair analogy would be a violinist who received a full ride scholarship. But this violinist is actually able to make money off of his talents in the free market. The football player? He can't.

The NFL is more popular than the NBA. The reason why is because college football is so popular. College football is popular because the best players have to stay and play for three years out of high school. If the best players don't play in college basketball, the NBA will make less money and have less viewership.

If you want these athletes to get paid, then no free rides for any student on any sports team and they have to go through admissions like everyone else. I find it funny that Nick thinks that there is just a pile of cash floating somewhere in the nether where if you are "good" enough you'll get it to spend on whatever you want. It doesn't work that way, most scholarships are for either certain people (race, gender), certain professions, and/or getting a good score on the SAT or good grades in school. The average college student can't get into a better school than they academically qualify for or make it less expensive by "getting good at something." And please explain what they are supposed to do after basketball or football, are you assuming that they made the right financial choices and are able to take care of themselves and their family and never have to work again? Not everyone gets to be an announce/commentator/coach after they retire.
