@@aviator-kn8zq I think it's the visual editing that polarises opinion. That TG chop-socky editing AKA 'late Jason Bourne movie' cut- shot technique gets right on peoples nerves after a while. Monkey Harris is one of the few reviewers who don't need that trendy camera work to make the car seem dynamic.
@jamesshives5679
@jamesshives5679 5 лет назад
Wayne Simpson That is certainly part of it in the choc vs tg debate, but I think the biggest issue with tg is the scripted (as the op said, "forced"), and dare I say childish enthusiasm, which feels like it discredits whatever the reviewer says until he gets serious. This got much better towards the middle-end when Chris Harris was much more himself, but at the beginning is a perfect demonstration of what I'm talking about. They are trying to keep the old top gear style, but it just doesn't work without the original three. The presenters seem to be forced (or encouraged, if you prefer) to be like someone other than themselves and the result is, as you would expect, not very genuine.

People who talk smack about Renault as a brand really need to update themselves on Renaults motorsport history and current motorsport dedication. Just because they sell cheap cars does not mean they are rubbish when they get their race engineers on the job.

Renault sport makes great sporty engines. But up until a few years back, the reliability of Renault cars was amongst the lowest of any mainstream brands, mostly due to faulty electronics - The interior was made of cheap and not durable plastic, even on decent models. And sadly, Renault Sport division updated the bare minimum on those cars... If you sit on a Megane or Clio RS, the dash and wheel look pretty much the same as your 1.4L petrol engine base model. I worked at a rental company for a while, we had '13 clios, megane, and Toyota Yaris / Verso. After only one year, on brand new vehicles, every renault had stained plastic on the doors, glossy plastic on the dashboard was full of marks, some of the "nice" textures had begun to wear off. Toyotas: plastic was still soft to the touch no sign of wear inside, seats looked new. Every time on the road you see a car breaking and the blinkers light up instead - 9/10 times it's a renault. That changed about 4 years ago, they really upped the quality of higher models, but this is the reason why they dont produce luxury cars - their image was well deserved, and sadly it impacted the Sport department who can and do design great cars !

@@patrickbateman7122 I am french, and i find that absolutely outrageous from english constructors. Renault and PSA (peugeot-citroen) are making cheap cars, so i can understand that it is more and more difficult to make those cars in France with high salary compared to poor countries ( That's one of the main reason why Renault with alpine and psa with Ds are trying to make better, more extensive cars). But English cars like Jaguar or Bentley are luxury cars, they are very expensive, so they have no excuse not to make them in Great Britain..... ... except...They have been bought by foreigners

Couldn't agree more! The Chris Harris drives are the best car reviews I've seen. Top Gear needs to stop trying hard to be like the old Clarkson format - they made it too over the top and silly. Pegging it back a bit and taking a different approach are needed.

@Cuahchic
@Cuahchic 5 лет назад
@@NikoBased I would respectfully disagree. Top Gear made its money from Clarkson's silly over the top presenting style and to be honest the programme was less about cars and more a lads banter thing between him and the other two presenters. Since that ended so acrimoniously this is an excellent opportunity to refresh the format. The new presenters don't have the chemistry of Clarkson et al and Chris Harris already has a huge following as a serious motoring journalist, so it feels like a missed opportunity to not allow him to do car reviews in the style he's been doing for several years now.

@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks Ah, I am choosing the MX5 cuz it has the Manual and it is a NA engine, actually if I were to get the MX5 Sport Nav+, I might send it to BBR to have the Super 200 kit fitted so it will have 200hp and the weight of 1000kg. And it is still a soft top convertible with manual and a NA engine that is great when it comes to running at the limit! A110 is great since it is hard top and it is so rare plus the horsepower, but in my country, there is not much use cuz we have so much mountain roads and speed limits of 30-50kph. @@lucianwisniewski8693 did you drive both on b roads or track? Which one left you the best feeling? I agree with the box, tested the non S on alpine roads. You have so much to deal with that I didn't miss the manual transmission at all
@lucianwisniewski8693
@lucianwisniewski8693 3 года назад
@@spolo123 When driving both on track, the big difference for me was just slightly better overall composure in the S. The standard car felt a little too soft at times (to me) and the S is still really quite good on b roads (a little jiggly, but the Sabelt seats are so comfy you hardly mind!) The S just had slightly more poke at the top end, allowing one to ring it out more which is rewarding (I actually think the chassis is so good it would be nice for yet more power, say 320bhp for example.) I honestly didn't miss the manual either just because the engine and gearbox work so well together. That said, I think if this were my only sports car, I would miss the third pedal and gearstick for sure! Also the DCT encourages one to drive at quite a brisk pace and this could be seen as a downside. But the lack of manual does allow the driver to focus purely on the driving, and the car obviously does this very, very well (in both standard and S form.)
@spolo123
@spolo123 3 года назад
@@lucianwisniewski8693Quite cool then. One thing the S I think would bring on alpine road also, with the better composture, would be being less snappy in quick series of curves...

What's the point of liking only "the best cars" ? Of course there's objectively "the best car", in terms of current price range and performances, putting aside the esthetic part, which is subjective. What would be the point of having any other cars then ? No one cares if you find the A110 ugly, or "not-too-performant, or "there's better cars for this price", that's bringing nothing productive but only your personal opinion. This car is absolutely brilliant and stunning in terms of design. Maybe the cheap and wobbly plastic in the interior puts the doubts on the price, but still, I think that's a great car.

Officially everybody loves it, but it doesn't sell. Best selling cars in Germany 2020: 1. Porsche 911 (7330), 2. BMW Z4 (4321), 3. Mercedes E-Class Coupe (4172), 4. Ford Mustang (3437), 5. Audi TT (3243), 6. Mercedes AMG GT (1893), 7. Porsche 718 Boxster (1720), 8. Porsche 718 Cayman (1199), 9. Mercedes SLC (1097), 10. Jaguar F-Type (913) ...... 21. Alpine A110 (166)......

Wish there was a manual option. No idea why they spent so much energy focusing on how if drives rather than lap times but then didn't fit it with a stick. L' déconcertant!

Of course they could have saved another 35 kg off it by simply fitting a manual gearbox. Pity.

@2:11 at least driving around with the piano on the roof will save the weight of carrying a sound system..

I don't really understand the negativity. I really like this style and I enjoy Chris Harris drives, too. You just have to understand that one doesn't try to be the other!

The (very) dumbed down Top Gear should end and Chris Harris can have his own show, without having to pander to the outdated format his current employers possess.

I felt sorry for chris and the company when it caught on fire in the episode, everyone testing it says its such a refreshing approach to sportscars and that is the wonderful thing about it. It may change peoples perception and with that the industry too. Good stuff, thanks chris
