Having owned a 911 which admittedly is a better drivers car and sticks to the road like superglue! But…… My 2015 amg gts is a fucking monster and makes you feel something that a 911 can’t replicate. It’s brutal and the looks especially with the facelift front grill it really is a handsome car! You will not see many of these on the road and prior to buying mine I only ever saw around 5 in my life! It’s definitely an amazing car and you can daily drive it unlike those fancy cars like Ferrari which are not built to be driven often as they are too fragile.
***** Why? Expose some of your technical knowledge, and give us your wisely-made, in-depth analysis, please, we all demand your wisdom and knowledge, all mighty UzzyFuzzyy, knower of all man-made vehicles!
***** ...So it can't beat a 911, and it's an "amgay gt", just because you prefer a different car...You need help kid, seriously, I mean, you are wandering around RU-vid 24/7, just for the sheer purpose of spreading hate on every single Mercedes-related video, creating fake accounts to thumb up, support, and showcase your shittalking....Go see a psychiatrist.
Guys uzzyfuzzy is a fuckinf low life! lol up top in other comments. Hes stirring the pot because he has no social skills and has other accounts to make it look like People are backing him up!
I find myself repeatedly watching Chris's videos in the hope that my contribution to the view count will in some way help him justify continuing to make them. My lunch time cup of coffee is just not the same without Chris chuckling away fully sideways in something worth more than my house. I'm very pleased he decided to start his own channel.
this is just too expensive to compare to a base 911 or f type. Maybe a 991 gt3 you could compare but now who in their right mind would choose anything in the world over a gt3?
This is just what the world needs! Not these super expensive cars with large dimensions and a million horsepowers, and of course we need more of Chris Harris! I don't care if it's up there with the 911 because in my opinion only a 911 can beat another 911. The way a 911 makes you feel cannot be explained, the way it drives it all just comes together so well. The AMG GT-S is anyhow a great release from Mercedes, finally we get something in the right marketplace and not these 200,000£+ cars that you'll never come close to.
Uh, it's 120,000 pounds just to start - and it's a Mercedes so by the time you have optioned it up it'll be pushing 150,000 pounds or more... I love it, but as a high middle income earner, it's way into dream territory for me - in a few years when it's depreciated it'll be more in my budget range - but it's a Mercedes, so in a few years it'll be falling apart and costing tens of thousands a year just to keep running properly.
Matthew Sharpe I've owned a 2003 E320 with about 265,000 miles when I sold it. The car was bought with 120,000 miles. Had its issues, but for a car in such a condition, it was quite trouble free. A 3-4 year old Mercedes with less than 30,000 miles shouldn't be a problem if you take the proper pre-purchase precautions.
Matthew Sharpe Falling apart? Yes told it my dad, his last Mercedes has driven 630.000 km without a single engine failure. Still same gearbox, same clutch. I've driven one up to 250k. So falling apart is absolutely nonsense.
***** M6HURRICANERR BMWMERCEDESAREKINGS You got busted kiddo. Even other users here recognized it how obvious you make a fool out of yourself. I hope you are only 6 years old. If you re older and behave like this then this would be very sad.
I think Chris set that bar several years ago; now it's "I, II, III, IV, V...etc." Chris can state more clarifying description while sliding this Mercedes sideways through the Laguna Cork-Screw, without missing a beat, than any other in this field can do on a straight road!!! ;^)
this car is breathtaking in person. i just saw one 3 days ago and actually moved it but only 10ft. i work valet and as i ran back to our lane after parking a car i was struck with awe. i thought "what mercedes is this!? this thing is a beast in a suit. looks like it embodies the racing spirit of the 70s (jag e type, toyota 2000gt, 70s ferraris and the old fort gt came to mind ) packed with the guns of an autobot" lol
Good on you Mr. Harris for telling Drive to get stuffed, and create your own free channel. You were the only reason I watched Drive, and it's great that you've now left them, so I no longer have a reason to watch drive, but to enjoy this channel for free, much respect!
I went from a 2009 997.1 911 Turbo to the AMG GTS. Both were altered by Renntech (doing 600hp now). The AMG is so much more fun due to the sounds it makes - V8 woohoo. Both are astonishing cars - can chew up highway like you wouldn't believe. The Porsche has 10x the traction (2WD vs AWD + rear engine) - which s good or bad depending on your point of view.
There's nothing like doing something that you really love. I've loved cars for as long as I can remember. I wish that I could travel around the world and review the exotics like you do. So far here on RU-vid your show is the best. Keep up the great episodes Chris. Cheers....
Every video I watch of yours from now on I am going to watch a full ad and click on it because I cannot directly support you through the patreon link, I hope this helps and I recommend everyone else to do this as well if you cannot directly support through pateon! Looking forward to the future of Chris Harris on cars!
The "end of turbo lag" is the simple secret this car shares w/ the BMW: It's undersquare (83x92mm). Thus the low-down grunt to supply torque while the turbos spool up, you're not in your typical oversquare hummingbird having to wait for the high revs. BMW's undersquare S54B32 (in the M3s and the roadsters) held the world record for torque-per-litre production engines for years until Ferrari took it w/ the 458. Why you see crazy RU-vid videos of M3s running insane 1/4 miles w/ bolt-on turbo kits.
Being mainly a biker, I have to say imo this car looks simply wonderful. I love it when Chris details all the components that make up what you feel on the road. Good job
Glad to have you back Chris! and for our enjoyment with your terrific reviews you have my support and i m donating... , keep going and all the best for you
Can´t wait to see the first 911 vs GT-S comparison. Love Porsche´s, but i think AMG has nailed it with this stunning car. Awesome review as always, Chis!
I see a lot of hating on the looks of the AMG GT. Give it time to grow on you and it looks seriously astonishing. A car that looks great at first sight is something you get tired of real quick. Its like a song you've just found and yet already loves, that sounds like shit after a short while.
The 911 looked good 50 years ago, still looks good now. So does the Range Rover. And Aston Martins. Not saying the AMG GT looks bad, I actually quite like it.
True that. I didn't quite like it when it was unveiled but now I like it a lot (to the point that it is, to me, one of the most beautiful cars out there now!)
ewt415 I was not referring to the the porsche 911. But since were on that path.. I don't really think the porsche 356, which the 911's design comes from, nor the 911 itself was that outstanding when first introduced, considering it looks like a flattened out VW beetle.
ewt415 Considering the 356 first was produced 10 years after the Beetle i don't find it pointless to say. The Porsche's design couldn't have been that revolutionary.
Mercedes seems to be on a role lately. Their new S-class and C-class are great and this AMG GTS looks gorgeous and also is fine peace of machinery. That 4.0 biturbo engine sounds fantastic, Mercedes leads to way again when it comes to producing the best. Can't wait to one day own my own Benz I just love the brand. Great piece Chris love that you have started your own channel. I''m sure that by the end of 2015 you will have close to 100.000 subscribers.
***** Of course a naturaly aspirated like the old amg v8 sounds better , but is the same problem with bmw(in fact is worse with Bmw). The old bmw NA sounds better than their new turbo charged engines as well. But the difference between Mercedes and Bmw, is mercedes can keep fabulous sounds in their turbocharged engines without piping synthesized sounds through the speakers like bmw.And the sound at the exhaust of the turbocharged bmw are not good. Mercedes keep very good exhaust note compare to Bmw. So when you said:"new amg engines sound like dogshit. old ones are better. " you should go compare the previous Bmw NA engines sound ,with the new turbocharged bmw and you will hear the enormous difference. Now do the same thing by comparing the Mercedes NA v8 with the new turbocharged v8 5.5 liter and hear the difference... As you will hear the difference is not so much worse than the difference with the old bmw compared with the new ones. And it's funny how often in your comments you said the bmw m5 f10 with rpi gtm exhaust sound fabulous ( I agree it sound good but not as nearly good at the older one if i play the same game like you) and you say the amg gt with it's 4.0 v8 sound shit but this 4.0 v8 is with stock exhaust , so go hear the bmw m5 f10 with stock exhaust and you will hear how it's sound awful! thousand times worse ! At least this new v8 4.0 sound ok with stock exhaust and we can not say the same thing for the bmw M5 f10. Even Chris say in this video than Mercedes are the first one who sucess to make good sound with turbocharged engines, and it's not what we hear from the journalists about the new turbocharged bmw like the bmw m5 and m3 (it's the contrary we hear).
***** But you you criticize an engine with stock exhaust (this 4.0 v8 in this video have stock exhaust) so why you talking about an aftermarket exhaust like the rpi gtm when you criticize an engine with stock exhaust. To be fair instead of say "listen to a RPI GTM F10 M5 dumbshit" you should say "listen to a stock bmw m5 f10". And if we hear a stock Bmw m5 f10 , we laugh so hard because it sound like shit.
***** "but amg use eisemann exhausts anyway for all AMG models dumbass" 1. there is no such company called "eisemann" 2. Where did you gather this bullshit from? :D AMG has no official exhaust supplier, they make their exhaust systems themselves...
Great review as usual. You are the only auto journalist who covers all aspects of a car, expected in a review. I never have any questions after watching your reviews. Keep up the good work :)
***** nah man. BMW *used* to make better cars than Benz. (by better I mean more driver and performance oriented) Not anymore though. And Benz is producing some utter garbage like the A45 nowadays too. Only a few labels keeping it where it's supposed to be today.
Considering purchasing this pre-owners. I own a Hellcat now but this beauty is a perfect car and the price in the used car market is very fair. My only concern is the maintenance cost but one must pay to play!
ftpaddict Not at all, but considering the 928 was made to replace the 911, finding another car with a 4ish liter front-mid mounted V8, with rear wheel drive and a rear mounted gearbox that looks like a 928 is too much of a coincidence not to be amusing.
ftpaddict Don't be so sure that it would be any better. AMG have been on a serious roll lately, pumping out some amazing cars, and the new GT is a continuation of this success.
Chris Harris, your videos are always superb and incredibly entertaining. Your driving and eloquent opinions make the content more realistic. Thank you. - David G. (Anaheim, CA)
This new SLS doesn't just have the charm and timeless style of the old one ... It just doesn't create any impact... They even ditched those doors. I would buy the old one.
Maybe because this isn't meant to be a "new SLS". By doing this, the SLS suddenly became a one model production car that may become a classic like the 300SL Gullwing
Wow, if you check the spec, the chassis design and layout is remarkably similar to what Porsche did with the 928! Still, this is an amazing car. Not really feeling the interior, but its refreshing to see Mercedes fill in the void BMW left when they decided to start building robots instead of driver's cars.
Totally agree with the hydraulic steering part. I hate electronic steering feel. It's too light. And not sure if the stability control is slowing the car down or not coz the engine placement of the GT is pretty much in front of the front axle plus a short wheelbase.
this car and 911 both have their cons and pros. this AMG has better weight distribution and hydraulic steering but 911 has AWD and rear seats. but i think for most people buying these cars image will be the deciding factor. in terms of image the 911 is iconic but also somewhat played out. this AMG is unique but also nobody knows what it is. i think it would be really hard to decide between the two. both are great cars and so is the Audi R8 the McLaren 570, the Cayman GT4, the Corvette the GT-R ... too many good cars out there !
+g1981c About the AWD, it depends on which 911 you're talking about. I guess the AMG GT S would be closer to 911 Carrera GTS with RWD, performance-wise. Yes, AMG GT has more power but 911 GTS is lighter so it was kinda draw for both IMO
+Antonius Tyaswidyono there is a 911 GT2 RS which is 4 liter turbo Rear WD with 620 hp. it was about $200,000 and it's the closest to AMG GT S IMO, but for twice the price.
+g1981c 997 GT2 RS has a 3.6-litre twin turbo flat 6 with 620bhp, and it's out of production already since 2011. It's closest rival would be AMG SLS Black... Current closest rival (power-wise) is 991 Turbo. Costs roughly the same, has roughly same power output but only AWD and had shedloads more torque.
***** A BMW fanboy accusing other people of knowing nothing about cars. That's pretty hilarious. Back in the days of the E39 and E46, BMW's were untouchable and the fact that rivals from both German and foreign rivals are now easily competing and even surpassing BMW in a lot of areas speaks volumes. BMW are far too busy pandering to the watered-down tastes of the Chinese these days but who can blame them, that market's huge! The fact that a brown person like yourself even knows how to use a computer is impressive. Your parents must be very proud, that is if they haven't already died from an easily preventable disease of course...
But... But..But I like the SLS more.. specially the Gull Wing Doors. it looks bigger more like a GT car, a fantastic combination of GT and Supercar. The New rear tail lights looked too much like the S-Coupe, it fits well on the S-coupe but if you put it on the GT, the arse is just ugly. Still love the old SLS tho despite the gearbox problems.
Matt Lawrence Romanes I mean the GT's interior looks amazing. but the exterior looked too much like 911 or F-type..which is not bad but too popular. and the engine, I understand how 4.0T is more eco, save more fuel, and everything but I miss the 6.2 so much. The first sport car I drove in my life was the C63..its the base version. it weights around 4K lbs but still pulls like hell. I have never experienced that in M3 or the new Mustang GT..its just...the power makes you laugh.
Kevin Li It looks nothing like the other two. The 911 looks like a Beetle with a spoiler, and the F-Type, well it's gorgeous. The C63 ain't a sports car. It's a sedan. Its the performance version of the C-Class.
ewt415 People like you who favorite justin bieber video's aren't masculine and therefore your opinion is invalid... Bed time kiddie your way past your bedtime
For as long as Porsche keeps the engine "at the wrong end" on the 911, nothing will touch it. Even if better cars will be made or have been made, the 911 will still be dominant. And not because its layout gives it superior dynamics, but because it gives it different dynamics. There's no other sports car in the world with the engine in the back, there's no other car that feels so different than anything else. In a blind folded test (let's asume you would do such a test) you would never be mistaken in recognizing a 911, while you could be with other cars. What I'm saying is that you never really "take on" the 911, you just say it as a marketing stunt, so people know you're serious about something :).
Only sports car with the engine in the back?? The Lamborghini Aventador, Huracan Diablo, Countach and Gallardo, Ferrari 458, LaFerrari, F430, F50 and F40, Audi R8, Bugatti Veyron, Ford GT, Ariel Atom, Lotus Exige and Elise, and many, many more all have the engine in the back. I really don't get what you're on about.
Trygve Germo All those cars have the engine positioned centrally. Yeah, at the back of the driver, but not "hanging" behind the rear axle like the 911. It has a lot of more weight on the rear axle than most of the cars.
I definitely appreciate this new venture by Mercedes and adore the exhaust, but as my avatar may allude, it just doesn't do quite enough to surpass the 911 for me. That said, I can see why this could be more appealing.
I like porsches and Mercs. I really have to say that i love the AMG GT .. at first I thought it looks boring and a little like a porsche, but seriously this thing looks great and not a little like a porsche if you take a look at it in real life. But i don´t think that this beats a 911 turbo s.. Let´s wait for the Nübrugringtime of the GT :)
To be fair, you really should have bought the W204 with that kind of money. Unless you want the better fuel economy and the newer designs and technology, the W204 has the potential to become a Mercedes classic with that engine and chassis. I'm sure the W205 would still be awesome though.
The Amg makes BMW M cars sound like sh-t. M5 just makes a noise. Not a pleasant noise just some noise. And from what I can hear M3 and M4 sound even more fake. This on the other hand is just fantastic
Are some of you actually sending Chris Harris money? Are you crazy? The guy works for Hearst Magazines, the company that owns Road & Track and Car and Driver! Haven't you seen his features recently on their web sites? Why don't you donate that money to a REAL charity or worthy cause and help those who are sick and/or destitute?
***** Nice language. Typical of today's women. Yup, it's your money and you're certainly entitled to spend it any way you want to. I was just pointing out that Harris makes a good living and is really quite cheeky, whining about the cost of making videos and asking people to donate to him. If you're feeling particularly magnanimous, you could donate to Donald Trump or Warren Buffet while you're at it. You know it costs a lot of money to run financial empires.
I understand what you're saying. He's established in this game and already makes good money. That said I want him to keep doing this, and I don't expect him to run a charity and produce these videos with his own money, for my enjoyment. I'm in favor of being able to give someone money for a product I really value. I actually appreciate the opportunity to give my money directly to the main producer of the video so he can do more of what viewers want, without the filtering of Hearst magazine and others or concern for sponsors, etc. He's trying a different revenue stream, one that allows him more independence. Whether Chris has money or is 'grassroots' is irrelevant to me - there are costs associated with doing this type of video independently, and as a happy viewer, I'm happy to contribute. It's clear that Chris loves doing this, and I'm trusting that my contribution will help enable him to keep bringing more content. Keep it up Chris!
I agree with you jeff. It makes me sick but angry when they admit that they'd rather donate to a wealthy man that is going to continue what he enjoys doing anyway. What do you viewers think? If you i don't donate then he won't update you with reviews? It's his occupation! He's not going to stop if you don't donate. And you still say you think he's more worthy than charity. Probably because half of the comments here belong to egnostics. Coming from a catholic this is sickening!
Cole Jones You're right, Cole. The world's ethics and morals are twisted by Satan and all the lost souls who worship him, whether they realize it or not. There are so many who need the salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thanks for the support. I hope you and your family have a wonderful, blessed Christmas.
You to jeff, merry Christmas:) those words will catch use with you Elizabeth. You can't change a Catholics mind about God. I never realised how many people didn't believe in God for a while because of how i raised as a catholic. There are so many people like you. I am not to judge because it is a sin so I'm not going to say anymore.
