I think it´s because the design was intentionally inspired by some nice looking oldtimer sportscars. It looks like a symbiosis of old and modern. Just the ridiculous proportions with the ultra long hood will make this car look cool even in 30 years. But as always a design like this will polarize. Some hate it, some love it.
Would you shut the fuck up with these doug is the type of guy bullshit, you stupid lame fucks only say this bullshit just to score likes and its fucking irritating
Watching in 2023... we need some of these old school reviews. Seeing the car drive by on the road and getting that external viewpoint is just as important as seeing Doug's face when he's driving.
Here in Sweden they are sort of old-man cars as well. I think it's mostly by habit though. 20 years ago that was a fact. And you see traces of it today - the A class is a quite desperate attempt from Mercedes' side to leave that image behind. But it's still driven by little old ladys. :D
In the US, they're typically seen as boring (but luxurious) commuter cars. The S Class and E Class are pretty well respected in that sense, and the C Class is just a "baby Merc" for those who can't afford the more expensive ones. Car fans know about AMG, but to most people, they simply aren't different enough in their styling from their sister cars to stand out. Ergo, Mercedes is boring.
I love this car! Got to drive it recently and I'm now selling my car to make room for one of these. It's a hoot, wonderfully built, and from reading some owner experiences at MB forums, it's very reliable and cheap to maintain. I really don't see any downsides with this car, Mercedes has finally made something I want.
The specialized media knows how capable the AMG GT is, but it isn't disseminated as 911's performance for exemple. If you ask a kid/teenager that like cars if a 911 is a good sportscar they'll answer yes right away, the same won't happen with the Merc tho... I think that was his point.
Ashish Patel yeah the gullwing doors go way back with mercedes but idk why they went to regular doors for the new ones but if i $400k laying around im buying me a lfa over any mercedes that lfa v10>>>>> mercedes
josh heredia i want to drive the new nsx. i bet within 2-3 years itll be under 150k price tag and ill want one. dont see the point in buying a new car that will loose a buttload of value.
Just bought one of these. Amazing car. Traded in my 2014 911 on one. Car is awesome. Handling is just as good as the 911 but it has the power of a muscle car. This is probably as good as it gets before you get into r8 or gt3 territory
@@conrado800 I bought one recently and it's comfortable. I'm 6'2" I had an E550 coupe and all though that car drives smoother, the seats were more narrow than the GTS
this will end up like the R8, respected but not valued well, in spite of it having incredible performance it just doesn't have the badge to carry prestige, a real shame
This means that it will be cheaper then, say, a ferrari 458 in a few years. Meaning its a bit more accesible for the average joe. It will hopefully be like the 911 996, with prices starting at around 10000 or so
Well the R8 suffers from being the Huracan's baby sister (Gallardo at the time), and this suffers from: 1- Not having Gullwing doors, 2- Having the C63's turbo 4.0l engine. If they were 100% analog it'd work, look at the SLS.
Thibald Leonhard Of course! Should have done so when the "coupe version" of the Panamera. NOT that I like the Panamera but that match could have been quite attractive...
Glad you said that. I saw an AMG GTR on the road last week travelling in the same direction as me. We passed each other (slowly) a couple of times so I got a great look at it. Awesome! I thought it was reminiscent of the 928. So much so I looked up Doug D & 928 right before searching for this vid. Then I switched between still side shots of each, back and forth, back and forth, but they really do not look alike. But there is definitely something "brother from another mother" about them!
4:30 only 500 horse power.Dear Dough De Muro.20 years ago if somebody said street legal car have only 500 horse power that person would be generally recognized as mentally insane
@@TheWarback1 yes I have. And what does that have to do with anything? Alfa Romeo has a 2.9L V6 that is just as powerful as the 4L V8 in this car, and nowadays 500hp is low for a high-end sportscar. Most of this car's competitors have over 550hp, so 500hp is indeed low
@@TheWarback1 Nissan GT-R 570hp McLaren 570s 570hp Audi R8 562hp BMW M8 600hp Basically the only rivals with less power are Porsches, unless you count the Turbo, which has 540hp
***** Clearly you are speaking from ignorance because the new ACR is a track monster, especially for the price. Nothing like the 90s car aside from the big v10.
hampstershat123 not quite, i know the acr set 13 new lap records on 13 tracks of which only laguna seca seems more important (to me at least) and it beat the record hold by the porsche 918 spyder. but it's still a viper...
I love when you (americans in general) say: "oh it just has 500bhp" "oh it's just a v6". Welcome to europe, the home of 1.6 litre and where 190hp is "a lot"
nope. sod off. he said that it wasn't even American muscle, my point was to show that Americans didn't pioneer the muscle car. I'll take that 5 quid though.
I stated an opinion, and you've done nothing to refute that or address it. Then you resorted to personal attacks both times. Haven't "diverted" anything. And I'm male, thanks. Keep bringing the hate, it sustains me.
The AMG GT-S is the real Mercedes SL. The first iteration was a super car while the modern cars are Lux GTs. The current SL is now completely obsolete with the introduction of the GTC Roadster.
I own a GTS ed 1 and a S550 cab... Im not an SL buyer however I like the SL and its hard top vert, its way more cushy than GT, more sport than S, perfect balance in between. Its not a replacement for a GT or S, it'll stay for a long time
People forgot that Mercedes is active in the F1 race and have won 8 Championship titles😎 They‘re experienced and that explain it all, I think if you have a real AMG you have little bit of F1 inside😁
lmao. No. it's called W124, there are a lot of e class models, but to bo specific about one you say W124 ('91 e class) or W210 ('95-03 e class) What i want to say if you dont understand is W124 is a model code, e class is a name of mb class like s class, c class etc. etc.
I could also call it E200 e stands for class, 200 stands for engine, in my case 2.0d, but that would be confusing since there also is brand new E200 (W212)
Emory alum here Doug. I love your videos. You convinced me to get an AMG GT over a Porsche. You’re the coolest Emory Alum I know. Keep pumping out the vids
This car doesn't start at $130,000, it starts at $111,000. People who are buying cars in this price range aren't looking at a Ferrari or Lamborghini but they are looking at a Jaguar, Porsche and Maserati. The Porsche 911's are such beasts that it's hard to get this car instead of a Porsche 911 but for those who want to stand out go for the Mercedes AMG GT instead.
The 911 range that starts competing with this car´s engine (v8 4000cc) is the 911 turbo, starting at €200k. Seems like a substantial difference to me. And please, don´t mix German cars with Indian-owned brands. Jaguar´s time was about 20 years ago, look up their mkt share.
"boring old sedans for boring old men" I never experienced anything boring about mercedes sedans over the years compared to other sedans on the market. Maybe exept some bmw's and of course the allmighty maserati quattroporte. Btw, I would rather by the GT amg then a cheesy lambo. It's one of the most great looking grand tourers out there.
Nah he's right alot of Mercedes are boring, too damn silent,no power feel,no tuning market,no sport rawness,no aggression,no stick shifts, just ol silent comfort rides, OLD PEOPLE LOVE EM!!!.I mean if thats what you like its fine but The AMG GT is a huge stand out.
meteoricthrone I've honestly not seen a bad word written about any aspect of this car. It would seem that the only people who underrate it are those who pre-judge the Mercedes brand and haven't actually driven it.
Phantomwhite The only bad thing I've seen is that there are some that wish the styling were more outrageous, but I like the subdued design. Less attention when you're driving around
meteoricthrone It's a Mercedes, of course it's going to be subdued. If you want outrageous styling, get a Lamborghini! I find it hilarious how some reviewers do that, they use a point that is either blindingly obvious or totally inappropriate in order to criticise a car. Case in point - I read a review on the MX-5 that had "no back seats" as a negative, I shit you not.
"it's a mercedes, how good could it possibly drive?" are you serious? whoever would say that has absolutely NO IDEA about cars and especially German quality
Funny thing is on motortrend this car went 126 mph in the quarter mile while the GTR and NSX were on 123 mph they finished before this car but if their was an extra 3-400' feet the Benz probly would of have passed and this thing does it with only 503hp
Well' to some people 500HP isn't really THAT fast", Especially when you ''daily drive'' an 800+ BHP car Like me! However, this Mercedes is sexy though!
The viper is what a true sports car should be. Great on both the road, track and in a straight line. It is severely underrated cause people think its some big engined tin box with plastic trim and broken switches from America.
This is one of those rumours which surround this channel just like the whole bumper to bumper unlimited mileage warranty. Hopefully one day Doug will talk about these things so we know.
i was really set on buying a corvette z06 until seeing this video review on the amg-gt... i think i am going to save an extra 30-40k and get myself this instead. what a beautiful car... i thought he was going to say it was wort 200k+ i was actually surprised to hear it is only 130k for what u get out of it... beautiful car.
Well, everyone has a different taste. Im a huge mercedes fan so gt would be my choice. Maybe you can deal test drive and try both cars and see which one is better driving car for you :)
Just bought my 2016 GTS with 3,380 miles. You had some definite influence and I thank you. However, you also ridiculously underestimated this car. Did you actually go balls out? It is fastest 65mph -145mph. Craziness! Big fan.
Yep, this is an amazing car. It won major praise in every review I have seen. I wouldn't say it's underrated because it is killing it in comparisons. People just aren't paying attention.
Doug, I am completely shocked by your presentation on this video. I am so used to your modern vehicles where you are smooth, quirky, and highly entertaining. You were all those as well, and you're more of those on your newer videos. Keep growing sir and see you in San Diego.
And I love the classic dimensions of this car. Long front end with a really short back, and you sit nearly on the rear wheels. I bet acceleration feels like a direct kick in the back.
Freddy, just covered up the front and I have to agree, the back end does look like a 911, but on the viper front end, the front has no dodgy panel gaps, it's nothing like a viper. :)
My boss has worked with a very clear goal in his mind: to be able to get one of these. So he set an example for the rest of us working for and with him, practically living at work and doing exactly what he told us we had to do himself as well. Now, it's all paid off for him. There have rarely been people as young and successful as him that have inspired me this much, and he absolutely deserves everything he has and has worked for thus far. His GT S is flawless white, with black leather interior and bright cerulean stitching. It's gorgeous, soounds awesome and is a reminder for all of us what hard work can achieve ;)
They killed it with that long wide hood, especially once paired with the iconic low-slung design. They knocked this one outta the park and I feel like going forward people will continue to look back at this automotive icon and covet/chase after it for distinguishing itself to be counted among the select few greatest as well as the most memorable cars for the rest of time
HEY DOUG! I was wondering if you wanted to drive and review my "1999 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE" with {189,000 miles} on it. Please let me know ASAP. With regards, Sean.
With all due respect, he doesn't. And the community would have very little to gain from it, sir. Look through the type of vehicles he compares, and then feel silly for asking. Lol Cheers!
There's just no reason to get this car over a comparable 911. The 911 offers all-wheel-drive, a manual transmission, and rear seats (small, but usable in an emergency and great for extra luggage/crap).
Rear wheel drive, sounds better, looks better, practically as fast around a track, and it's just different from the 911 which has been so good for so long that some people just get kind of bored with it. Some of these things are subjective but car buying is made off of subjective observations anyways.
TheCJSChannel You can get the 911 in rear-drive. Looks and sounds are subjective, so that's immaterial. Being practically as fast still makes it slower. 911's are respected for a reason: they are NOT boring. I've driven the new GT-S, and it has NO soul.
TheStallion234 I wasn't saying that was better or worse as a fact, per say. I was giving my personal opinion based on my personal driving experience. My other points were objective.
You can only get rear drive in the lower models. The most comparable 911 to the gt-s is the turbo and that is only all wheel drive. It is a little slower but not by much, and most people will never notice the difference. I also acknowledged that some of that stuff is subjective but you said it has no soul, which is in the same category. I'm not saying it's for you, but it has its place because of those subjective qualities. People have different tastes and goals in a car.
Yes it drives well and sounds amazing and is also good at cruising but way more importantly - it is not only the most beautiful Mercedes in decades, it may very well be one of the best looking cars on sale today. I know looks are a matter of taste but you can't really say it doesn't look good, especially at the rear end.
Atermagister German Engineering is the best but when it comes to reliability, it’s the not best in that category. Don’t get me wrong, the Germans can build one hell of a car but making it reliable is something they should look at more.
I had one of these. For the sport car variables (looks, acceleration, steering, luxury, sound, reliability), it was not 1st of my many cars, but it was the best all around sports car I ever owned.
AMG really nailed it with this thing. They basically took the SLS, and made it better for the track and for the road. However, I still would take the SLS. It is just insane in every way. The curves of the rear end, the sound of the 6.2L N/A V8, and the gullwings. So while the SLS is completely illogical in almost every way, and the AMG GTS is pretty much the perfect mix between track and on road, I'd still take the SLS. I think its just something about the character of it.
trueman mann the black series is, but the “normal” SLS can be anywhere from $150-250k depending on mileage, options, years etc. Got a vid on my channel cleaning out the intake if ur curious lol
I have one of these but the newer model facelift. It’s excellent car. I have an m6 too and the gt is more fun than that. Tho I will say the m6 is more in its element on the highway. Gt sounds AMAZING too - get the performance exhaust
The next future classic from AMG! Anyone selling their GTS now for ~$80K is going to regret it in 5-10 years... mark my words! This type of car is never coming back. The next GT is going to share the SL platform and be a hybrid electric.
@@mightyshrigga_3826 because GTA is an excellent way to introduce vehicles to people who aren’t very well versed in automobile culture. I got interested in cars through games like GTA, so it’s nothing to complain about. Was the original comment stupid and irrelevant? Yes, but being so anti video game is ignorant
@@ForestTurtle Yah sry i'll delete my comment. Guess i just got a lil pissed. But i aint anti-video game, im playing video games almost every day. So yeah, sorry bout that
@@aliakadraco if you fumbled a gear shift during hard acceleration in a high power car, like 4 to 3 when you want 4 to 5, you will lock the wheels and make a fool of yourself.
Small correction, has a biturboed engine. Its a little different because the two turbos are completely independent from each other. One turbo for each side of the engine instead of a smaller one and bigger one for different rev ranges.
@@camirocz fully agree! i've had the pleasure of driving the GTS edition 1 and GTC roadster, as well as the v6 and v8 F-type variants, audi r8 v10 plus, and the db9. all completely different. Forget F-types if you're after a true drivers car. Db9 is dated, but comfortable and v12 sounds incredible. R8 v10 plus is fast and capable, but souless and almost too easy to drive fast. Pick of the bunch: GTS or GTC. Fast enough for anyone and they demand respect. The most exciting to drive with an incredible engine and sound and zero lag. very well balanced, but without a gradual learning curve it will bite your head off!
