Come on then, what do you make of the all-electric Honda E? With 99% of journeys in the UK under 100 miles, is it a car that's 99% suitable to our lives?

I get the majority of the time your journey with be under 100 miles but knowing that if you wanted to go on a day out or away somewhere that you wouldn't be able to take your 30k car unless you wanted to stop and charge it up for 30 mins just seems a rip off. My old motorbike had a range of around 120 miles, it lasted a few days between fill ups with daily commuting. The idea of starting the day with a full 130 mile range every morning is pretty good
@rhidiandavies1991
@rhidiandavies1991 3 года назад
It's fine for most daily commutes but there's always that once a fortnight unforeseen journey for work or in your personal life that will be made 100 times more stressful if your car only has a 130 mile range and takes 6 hours to charge - and how many people can afford a second car to combat this? Not many when this thing costs 30k on its own. I love the idea and look of it (although the concept was much cooler imo), and would love to own one, but the range and charge time would make so much of life's little complications so much more difficult.
@twpsyn
@twpsyn 3 года назад
@@rhidiandavies1991 These "cheaper" EVs only really make sense for people living in or around large cities. I certainly couldn't afford one, but then again the everyman couldn't afford a car years ago and miners just used motorbikes for their family transport. This is still early days, let those who can afford them fund the research and development for electric equivalent of the Mini and the necessary infrastructure to support it. By then the cost of the batteries will have decreased and the technology will be further developed as well
@anydaynow01

@@twpsyn I use to feel the same way about the range anxiety but remembered when I would ride a motorcycle around with it's shorter range. Turns out, monitoring my driving distance, I never require more than about 70 km of driving distance in a day. I think that's the main reason why the A90 Supra was developed such that it is a BMW Z4 underneath, but do you also think that if Toyota had not done that and make a new chasis and performance 6-cylinder engine from scratch, we would have the Supra much later and at a price that will make us all go "for a Toyota? He’s definitely right about Toyota nearly ALL their cars now are boring hybrid runabouts that are almost identical, and the interiors are just shockingly cheap and nasty. I honestly don’t see the point of a Corolla/Yaris Hybrid when you can have the Prius.
@99Lezard99
@99Lezard99 3 года назад
Absolutely. Look at old civics from 88 to 00 Double wishbones in the front and independent rear suspension. Unique in its class. Also full Aluminium engines with 16 valves back then. What where for example the germans doing in this class back then? Heavy iron lumps with 8 valves, cheap mc pherson struts and even cheaper torsion beam or solid beams in the back. Plus, no variable valve timing. So yeah Honda allways had an Engineering spirit about it. Starting all the way back with the first car they put on sale the honda s500/s600. They allways had a special focus on egineering. The civic cvcc, the 1300 Coupe, the s800, the Prelude, the insight, the NSX, the integra Type R, the civic Type R EK9 and so on.
@stephanvelines7006
@stephanvelines7006 3 года назад
What are you talking about? Volkswagen had 5 valve per cylinder engines back in the day. Wasn't all that reliable (to be honest) but from a engineering stand point they where right at it back in the 90s and 00s. And all in all it did work as many 1.8T 20V are abused by making twice the intended HP figures (sometimes even more). BMW had VANOS since the BMW M50 (1990-96), Porsche VarioCAM since the 90s as well. The base Civic 1.3 was a carburated SOHC engine back then. If you're comparing top of the line engines keep the facts straight at least. I respect Honda btw. don't get me wrong.

@@stephanvelines7006 yeah the first vag 20v was like 1996. Toyota also had a 20v at that time btw. The first 5 Valve came from Ferrari. Vanos came 92 Vtec 89. Honestly, after driving an E-UP with less than half the range of this - I’m definitely loving what Honda has done with this car. It has more than double the range, and the better suspension and much better built car is an absolute joy. I hate small cars and especially EV’s, you’re always being constantly reminded of what’s been saved on, either bodywork, insulation, interior etc. But for this car, you feel like you’re driving a normal, well built and safe car. I don’t understand why everyone is bashing it’s range. Someone told me I’d should rather get a Zoe with the increased range. Have you driven one? It’s like it’s constantly draining your life force. Not only that - it got ZERO stars in the last NCAP test. ZERO!!! Appreciate the Honda for what it is. 200km of driving wherever you want, then charge and continue 🤷‍♂️

The issue with range is spot on. This car would fare so much better with more range. Doesn't make sense to shell out that amount of cash when there are options such as the Peugeot e-208 which has over 300km of range for a similar price. So this Honda becomes more of a niche than anything else, where you have to love the design more than the practicality.

As a commuter car it's brill. So what if the range is 130miles. My Mrs drive 6 miles to work and 6 back on rural roads & then a 4 miles drive to Sainsbury's. One full charge would last her a week on a cold winters week. I would love her to sell her 1onwer low mileage Honda Cr-z but she won't. I wonder if those prototype wheels are available from anywhere?

This feels like a more feature rich Leaf. Hopefully with better battery technology. 130mi is plenty for every city commuter and city driver here in the states.

What gets me is all these cars are coming out with more and more elaborate touchscreens. Touch here ,swipe across,swipe up,swipe down etc. Just to do basic heating or radio controls. Now you can watch a fishtank and feed them while driving.....but you get fined for using a touchscreen mobile phone!

Is a good follow-up because I think I'm sorry the TV presentation of this was a let down he was driving it round country Roads which its not designed for and as for the fun park guess it was funny but this car is so much nicer than the other two you compared it with. As you said the looks alone you drive this around the city and everyone looks at it one drive past me on a roundabout and I nearly crashed my car because I was so happy to see it I want to run up to it and hug it, good point about Honda and Toyota because I don't think Honda would be silly enough to put a BMW engine in one of the cars.👍

This is Honda's Phaeton. (Wait, what ?!?!) They don't expect to sell tens of millions of them but it's a statement of what they can do and is coming from their very own direction. Expect bigger stuff with longer range in the future, all made cooler by this having come first.

They're missing the point about the range. If you live in an urban centre, you need a big battery. People who live in dense areas don't have private garages to charge in. So you need the range to between charges. Lots of people where I live have EV's but live in apartment complexes.

I would really like one but 30.000gbp for a car I can't really take anywhere outside the city (at least unless there's a plug waiting for me at my destination) is too much. I am not a rich man, if I pay that much it would be for my everyday car, weekend included. I can't pay 30.000gbp for a car that basically can only take me to work and back or at most to the next big city and back (barely). If it had maybe 100 miles more of range, then hell yeah.

Good video, but yeah 130 miles of range isn't gonna cut it for me either, especially when I can get a Chevy Bolt with nearly twice that for just a little more money

I don't understand why they didn't go with the original design. That was pretty bad ass. And I don't see enough of a difference because of some kind of regulations.

Imagine if it could do say 200miles and 0-60mph in 6 seconds (ie 300km and 0-100kph in 6 seconds) this would be the best little car on earth.

@Chris ..... 99% of domestic journey's are less than 100miles in the UK. This is why all the sub 150mile EV's are the best thing you can buy under £30k imho. As a School / shop runner it's perfect for most people.

If you can only afford one car it is too small to do the many jobs most cars are used for. If you need a second car a £6k supermini will do the job and you have £20k for petrol! All reviewers also rave about the tight turning circle. Sounds great, but I hated the 'quick' steering on a smart forfour. A tiny movement of the wheel and the car front swings out far more than you realise, especially when reversing. Its a bit like a steering a dodgem.

They could’ve just omitted all the body cameras for traditional mirrors and put that money toward extending the range.

No charging in sweden for this kind of short range, to bad it's a cool car! Also the big urban charging stations that does exist is all taken over by e-car rental/pool companys no chance getting a charge park there.

They are leasing from £250 per month. Not too bad, list price is pointless when 80% of private cars in UK are pcp / lease

I'm pretty sure this will end up being a bit of a design icon. It might still look modern in 10 years and could end up doing what the mini did, not updating the design really and keep selling it. This is the first iteration, the range will increase.

I feel its a car great for those who work in town and only drive maybe 60 miles a week. This way they can go a week between charges and still get groceries in the back. I would buy one if I had the money
