He wrote this about his sister who was dumped by her boyfriend when she was 17. I always loved this song. He's got a great voice, and he's a hell of a guitarist!
I actually lived in Chris Rea's house. My ex-girlfriend's parents bought the house in north London from him in the late 80s and while they were away we lived there for a couple of months. I used to hum this song in the bath!
You guys have just begun…Chris Rea’s entire collection is under appreciated and DEFINITELY worth exploring…he quickly became one of my all time favorites…heck, check out “Driving Home for Christmas” since it’s still January…respect…
I fell in love with my now husband in high school when I hear this song just reminds me so much of him. We have been married 37 years! I love the 70s and I love all of you and your reactions are so genuine keep up the good work boys❤
This was a huge AM Pop radio hit Fall of 1978! I was a senior in high school. Anything rainbow was very '70s. Not sure why Ryan would think it was '80s, lol.
Your reactions to hearing these songs for the first time are fun! I grew up with these songs and they still hold up today. These songs are still fresh to me, but, I have to remember that there are younger people like you guys that have never heard these songs before. So glad you like the music from the 70s. Such a great time for music! Chris Rea... Total Fire!
Chris Rea is definitely an underrated genius who only real music admirers know and respect. And this song is one of his Top 5 and a Top 10 to me for my whole life. I am happy to realize there is still some light at the end of the tunnel for this generation.
That has to be one of the earliest pauses you've ever had in a reaction video. Ryan instantly loving it and Nick cracking up was great. Another awesome clip for an awesome song. As an older follower of your page, I love seeing how you guys think about these songs. It has such history and invokes powerful memories for a lot of us. Sometimes it's the sound that takes us back to that era.
Chris Rea is a most under-appreciated talent. Let me suggest his song "Letters from Amsterdam." Again, a different style. To borrow from Ryan, it is fire!
This is one of my favorites of all time! I still remember being a 17 year old in college taking ballroom dance as a PE, and dancing the cha cha to this.
Chris rhea is anything but yaht rock! His total catalig is electic! You need to check out all his stuff! Damn fine guitarist! He goes from this to real great rock... He was real yiung when he sang fool he get better and batter as he ages. Fyi. Hes been thru pancreatic cancer and almost died. Thank the gids hes still around! ( yeah there's better version of fool). . Its🔥 and its a great tune.
I just dig the reactions! Lol. Yes,this is what i used to listen to when i was a little girl back in 77,now im 55. This is how awsome music was, back then!! Im so glad u all are enjoying what real music was lile!😀😃😁😆
Seriously one of the great guitarist song writer singers of our lifetimes - huge in Russia interestingly - dozens of great albums - if I was stuck on an island with one artist to listen to Chris Rea - many great songs, about 30 bangers - this one not in my top 10 but a goodie Love to Chris Rea and all who know! Australian here 4 years in Europe in 89 -93 when he was huge.
I'm sure Nick knows "The Road to Hell" but when you do it one day in the future, PLEASE do parts 1 and 2 together. It's so much better like that. Just look at all the likes my post will get. 😂
I was in Australia late 1987 and two Chris Rea songs were played all the time. ‘Windy Town’ and ‘Loving You Again’. Great songs that are on different spectrums. And showcase his bluesy guitar style. Both worth a listen!
Yacht Rock Gold . Very good mood and moving emotional lyrics. His little sister has her heart broken and wrote this song for/about her. God only knows how accurate that was for such a young man to compose
I heard Chris Rea in an interview once saying this is the only song he played piano on and not guitar. The music industry tried to peg him as a piano player like Billy Joel and Elton John. He thought it was strange because he thought of himself as a guitar player. This song just happened to be his 1st hit single.
Chris Rea was my mom's favorite singer. He had a song called Driving Home for Christmas which was on repeat every December. Fool (If You Think Its Over) is his biggest song. Love it.
This man is a gem. So many songs to explore. Wired to the moon and Driving Home for Christmas just two I would like your reaction to. Though have fun listening to anything done by Chris
I’m so glad i discovered this channel… you guys are the BEST reactors !! You have such fun as you appreciate this amazing music so many of us grew up with and didn’t realize we were hearing the best music ever made … Love this song
This is like a Kumbaya moment with you two on this song😊 I totally dig what the Sax does to Ryan🎉❤ It never misses 👍 Hey Nick, and Ty whereever you be🎉
Guys I so love your stuff! Ever since your reaction to Year of the Cat. As a lifelong Chris Rea Fan (every album) I recommend you listen to the versions on 'New light through Old Windows' an 80-s re-arrangement he did of his most popular songs. They are even better than the originals. 'On the Beach' is more up-tempo, 'It's all gone' is awesome, the version of this song highlights his voice much better. Later songs like 'Looking for the Summer' and 'All summer long' are also brilliant. He is huge elsewhere but because he never toured the US he is best known outside in Europe, the UK Australia etc.
i dont know if you guys take suggestions but a lady who is similar and in fact had this song in the uk charts is ELKIE BROOKS and her song LILAC WINE is mesmerizing
"Benny Santini" was a stage name Chris Rea considered using when beginning his musical career. That rainbow scarf appeared so many times in '70s photography among various artists. Peace, love and rainbows! Btw I absolutely knew Ryan would eargasm when those power chords, sandy velvet crooning and lush strings kicked in. Totally classy tune without the slightest pretension. p.s. Using parentheses in a song title can lend an almost literary touch to a work or suggest an alternate meaning or take on the title as in R.E.M.'s “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" and many other songs.
I've known THIS song forever but I never realized how raspy his voice is until I watched your reaction to On the Beach (a song that I didn't know before but now IS DEFINITELY going on the Pool Music playlist for sure). Thanks, guys!
Like the Yacht Rock - Soft Rock reviews....Fire! I graduated high school in 1979 so a lot of these song (Like Chris Rea) I liked when they were new. The 70s were great for all types of music and I liked most of them, from Led Zeppelin to Elvis Costello. I'm thinking you guys might love "Moonlight Feels Right". Fits that 70s soft rock/yacht rock theme perfectly. Huge hit for Starbuck in 1976. Give it a try.
You guys are funny. As a teenage girl in the 70's I can say, in my opinion, that this is a girls song. Don't know many guys who were listening to Chris Rea. Maybe do David Cassidy Cherish or I think I love you or even Bobby Sherman Julie, Julie, Julie. This kind of music appealed to us girls.
…and the lyric “new born eyes always cry with pain, first look at the morning sun” is such a beautiful analogy and has always stayed with me through my heartbreaks… and oh that sax!! 🎷
Heard Rea say more than once that the label mis-marketed him in the beginning and his later output proves it. He has done quite a few Blues guitar LPs.
I pretty much quit buying recorded music right around the time Rea came out in Canada. I bought the Road To Hell CD but never listened to anything else from him. This is a nice song. The chorus and Rea’s vocal style in the chorus reminds me of “Pretty Lady” by Lighthouse; ‘73. ☮️💕
Awesome! We're goin' down the Chris Rea rabbit hole of fantastic music! Gotta check out "Electric Guitar","Working On It","It's All Gone"....the list is endless
This is a great album. There are a number of tracks where he rocks out (like "Fires of Spring"). Unfortunately, people always seem to concentrate on the single instead of going deeper. Another Chris Rea classic is "Workin' On It"(1988?) which shows off his powerhouse rock guitar playing.
Guys if you ever get around to Al Stewart again, listen to 'Don't forget me' off 'Famous Last Words'. Ryan's head will explode. The production and of course the sax is unbelievable.
This is the only song he released in the United States. He didn’t like the music industry here and returned to England and became huge all over Europe, even in eastern Europe. Listen to the long version of “nothing to fear”. It’s best to watch the video to fully understand. By the way, Benny Santini was the stage name they chose for him, but he chose to keep his real name. I thought he just disappeared till I was in Ukraine and I heard that voice from long ago. I now have all his recordings plus his 11 album set that’s a history of the blues. His music is called jazzy blues.
Ok, the album title... When Chris was starting out, the American record company thought he looked Italian, so they came up with the name , Benny Santini, and Chris said something like, "How about no?".
this song might have hung around for a few years. It is on vj top 40 for his month and quarter over and over. very good song. not a ground breaking song(butt hey did have a song on the top 40 which none of us have had), but enjoyable to review as a lost classic.
a great 70's tune you need to listen to is Moonlight Feels Right by Starbuck. See if you know the instrument they middle solo is done on. Great 1 hit wonder and I've always loved this song
