I remember reading about how they set a 1958 Plymouth Fury on fire this is 1983 long before CGI. And danger wasn't from the stuntman burning to death it was because the fire quickly burned all the oxygen out of the car.
@@willdallas53Christine is classic King. A fun supernatural concept, a unique setting, and Arnie is arguably the most relatable character he's ever written, at least to me.
@@willdallas53he said favorite. Not the best. My favorite movies are transformers and Speed Racer. The best movie is probably like 12 Angry men or Jaws.
I got to see this awesome cult classic in theaters this year thanks to Fathom Events, along with John Carpenter’s They Live. Now a days, I have a new found appreciation and love for the film. *Happy 40th Anniversary Christine!* ^-^
I found it funny when I learned that Carpenter considered George Thorogood to play the owner of the junkyard in the final scene when she's crushed. But Carpenter reconsidered when he thought Thororgood wasn't a good enough actor.
I loooooooooooooooove Christine! Such an underrated cult classic, and a cool story to boot! I can’t listen to Beast of Burden without thinking about this movie!
Yeah, that iconic scene where the burning Fury is chasing Repperton down the road, the headlight creating this false horizon, hearing Repperton's labored breathing as he runs in real time while Christine chases him in slowmo, with the beat of the music rising as she gets closer. Stuff of nightmares, stuff of LEGENDS.
Agreed. Can't come up with your own ideas? Wait 40 years, stroke the ego of the original creator, then make money off their ideas! At least "Halloween 2018" and "Kills" are decent.
@@thisisnotachannelWait till he possibly gets his hands on Friday the 13th and it’s just a My Bloody Valentine homage. He needs to stay in his relm from now on with things like M3gan and FNAF
@@John-gl6th"Evil dies tonight😂" Yea it was subpar and everyone acts like it was amazing because Micheal goes full Jason on Haddonfield. The best part of that movie was Big Jon and Lil Jon.
I always got the idea that Arnie was being possessed not by the previous owner but by the image of the car’s “kind of guy”. Just like a toxic girl (and that’s very much what Christine is, a toxic girlfriend), she takes weak guys and uses her sexiness to reshape them into the guy she’s turned on by. The similarities in the previous owner and Arnie are not because of him, but because of her. That the evil didn't pass through the car between two guys but emanated from it in the first place. Even furthermore, the car’s a girl who hates guys in general, which is a typical thing for chicks like that, to take one man, utterly dominate him, and weaponize him against other men. I think the movie’s angle on that is actually better than the one in the book, personally.
I can also see this film’s extended influence in Halloween Ends, which I also think is severely underrated. Plus, I also think this film can be seen as a rather extreme love story with Christine being alive and defending Arnie against those who harm him. Kind of similar to that episode of Futurama where the Planet Express Ship (voice by Sigourney Weaver) was dating Bender but acted like a jealous over protective girlfriend. Regardless, she’s quite an awesome car.
@@John-gl6thIt's a messy movie, mostly because of Laurie and Michael but there's been worse, the Cory story was interesting enough to keep me engaged.
Been waiting for you to talk about Christine since I first found you over nine years ago. It’s probably an unpopular opinion but it’s my personal favorite King adaptation and second favorite Carpenter film. Watched it for the first time when I was quite young and it wasn’t much to me but rewatching years later I was much more interested, got to see it in the theater this past month for the 40th anniversary and it was delightful, it was also the last film I watched with my grandpa last thanksgiving before he passed away this year. It’s a movie that will always be with me and always have influence somewhere I go. I hope to find some type of Plymouth from ‘57-‘61 myself someday as a neat passion project to make her whole again. I hope I won’t turn into what Arnie became though lol. Thanks for this review Doc. I’ll always appreciate your input on my favorites and those I’ve never seen before
That doesn't make sense. How is Christine a substitute for Michael? She changes her driver on a fundamental level and goes after anyone she sees as a threat. Michael doesn't have a driver counterpart and kills anyone in front of him.
Scouts Honor I'm not a scout. The kid was cut in half they had to scrape his legs up with a shovel. Isn't that what you're supposed to do with💩 scrape it up with a little shovel.
By far this was my favorite of King’s books and adaptations. The movie took its time to give solid character bios without drowning you in tons of exposition. My belief is no movie ever made better use of the “less is more” ideology than Christine. Yes the movie may have sections that feel slightly bogged down, but those moments made you enjoy the moments with Christine more, and you didn’t need to have gratuitous gore thrown in your face to appreciate the suspense and natural horror. Yes the movie is a departure from the book, but I feel both entities stand strongly for different reasons, and you can enjoy both basically giving you two different experiences over the same material.
Just rewatched this film in 4k, and was surprised when I realized this movie is almost entirely bloodless. It really uses suspense and atmosphere to build terror.
I love that the car is already possessed in the movie vs the book having Lebay taking possession of the car & a Fun Fact: The actor who was cutting up Christine's seats when Reperton & his goons start trashing her actually got hurt so in a way the car was fighting back.
One of the first scary movies I remember watching as a kid.then got older and read the book which introduced me to Stephen King...top 3 of my favorite movies of all time.
The final shot of the movie does show a rear view mirror poping out of the Christine cube. Indicating she can still regenerate. It may take a while, but eventually she will be back.
I always try to see this one whenever its re-released. It's got all my faves - cool old cars, sick synth scores, and Carpenter in his prime! A fun fact, John Stockwell (Dennis) was also in "Top Gun". I wonder if Cougar ever told Maverick and the rest of the squadron about that traumatic incident with the car...
Good review Doc. Greased Lightning during Christine's destruction, Zoinks! As a fledgling gear head, appreciate some of the car trivia. Mind blown on the parallels between this and HALLOWEEN 3. Thank you Doc.
Man this was a treat, one of my favorite movies since childhood. I do like the book better but I've always loved the movie. Great video, doc as always!! Happy Halloween 🎃
I watched Christine for the first time last year and loved it. Arnie is such a great protagonist and the car effects are incredible. I still don't know how they did some of the effects and I actually don't want to know. A true "movie magic" kinda film and distinctly Carpenter.
Doc’s videos are so well edited and so well done, no wonder it takes some time to release them. The intro to Doc’s videos are the best I’ve witnessed on RU-vid. Extremely well thought out jokes, not overly excited like most …RU-vid movie reviewers, doesn’t bow down to popular demand. The only criticism I have about the Doc is that he hasn’t really explored more foreign horror movies (not much of a criticism, it’s just something I’d personally like to see more of) In other words, the Doc is the fuckin horror master of RU-vid !!!
Saw the film almost 40 years ago, so only remember the highlights. I guess I never thought much of the film because I never tried to see again. I also read the book, but remember only the film.
Weird; I remember the car being possessed by the Old Man's dead sister, Christine. Made a lt more sense ot me than the car just inexplicably being both alive and evil
This film probably has the funniest behind the scene stories ever. Alexandra Paul played a prank where she had her identical twin to pretend to be her. There even a photo of Carpenter looking right at Alexander clearly with a suspicious look.
This really is a great adaptation of the novel. I don’t mind the changes they made as that’s normal for most book to screen works as Carpenter does still understand why Christine is evil. She is a disturbing vessel for a nasty spirit and that spirit is what makes her and Arnie so evil; that’s at least spelled out in the novel whereas Carpenter puts a bit of ambiguity in the film though still hinting Roland LeBay’s spirit is involved
Christine is my favorite Stephen King book and I watched it after reading the book. I feel like since I was born in 83 I have some kind of connection to a lot of flicks/books from that time. As a Carpenter fan I say this is a good adaptation. Sure there's things from the book that I would love to see in a potential remake even though I know it'd be a cgi fest. Still I love the book and this film. Can't wait to see what you have in store next for your reviews!
Reggie, Mike and Jody have the superior Plymouth... 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda 440-6 Pack 4-Speed And 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda 426 Hemi A LOT of bad thinbgs with Phantasm, the Mad Max Cuda was not one of them.
It blows my mind that the good Doctor hasn’t touched the Phantasm series. It’s the one horror franchise where each instalment isn’t as good as the last but there is still a lot to commend about it.
The book had some pretty glaring ripoffs and plot holes-- but when it was doin' it's own thing coherently it was great. I love the ending. Dennis, barely the hero the first time, sees all of those who knew and survived kind of scatter around the country and vanish. He then sees a news story about the last surviving "bully" (who actually really wasn't one) being mashed by a car that bashed through the wall of his job out in California. He puts together that Christine is back on the roads and on her way to take him out last. He reflects on now being too old and injured to do a damn thing about it when she comes to collect.
