He's a terrific actor. Check him out in DePalma's "Dressed To Kill," superb. I also admire John Stockwell's work here, and the fact that the film doesn't look MTV 80s, floofy hair and all that stuff. The book was actually set in PA, near where I grew up
@@AAZEDLARC I grew up near there too, and that's why I like the movie more than the book. In the book, it's near Pittsburgh, and all throughout the read, they talk about going home and watching the Phillies, or listening to the Phillies on the radio. As a Pittsburgher, that always gave me a kneejerk reaction, and took me out of the story. NOBODY from that area wants to hear ANYTHING about the Phillies, lol. It's Pirate town! The movie doesn't do that, lol.
No, no. You've got it all wrong. Christine languished for years without an owner to love her. Arnie's love brought her back to life. They were extremely jealous. He fought for her. She fought for him. It destroyed them both.
I always had the impression that Christine is slowly taking over Arnie and causing his behavior to turn dark. They went out of their way to make him look pale with circles under his eyes as the movie progresses, almost ghostly. He's not outright possessed, but is being corrupted by the evil car.
I LOVED how, in the novel, Arnie had to push Christine backwards in order to reverse the damage. This led to Arnie developing back problems and hunching and limping like the previous demented owner.
@@isaacshaver6218 In the book it's very clearly laid out that it's LeBay who's taking over Arnie and who's spirit Is piloting Christine and not Arnie himself. This is rammed home most definitely in the scene where Buddy Repperton is killed over towards Squwauntic Hills
I agree with another comment I saw on here. Christine and Arnie were meant for each other. They were both used, abused, and basically thrown away in the movie version. They met and ultimately rebuilt each other. Both were consumed by jealousy and took out all the s***ers that tried to break them back down. And, yes, this is totally a revenge movie. Fun Fact: One of the original screen used Christine's is currently on display in Colorado at the Rods and Bods Car Museum in Jefferson County. You can't sit in it, but you can take a picture standing with it.
Definitely a revenge movie. If you were someone bullied in school, you'd understand how it feels to want to get payback (albeit not to this extreme lol)
Actually I've seen a lot of footage to confirm that kids aged MUCH faster in this time period. A lot of PSA films from the 70's have teens who "look 30" by today's standards. There's a RU-vid channel called Old Time TV where you can see this.
Love this movie. I will admit it's a classic for sure. I remember a couple years ago actually getting to see the Christine car. I got to get my picture taken with the car. They told me to lay under it to look like I was getting run over. The photographer asked me why I was smiling. I replied with it's Christine.
Keith Gordon was amazing in this role. IMHO this is one of the few King novels that was translated into a top notch movie (both novel and movie were great). Great job again Minty! You did a great job digging up some interesting info for this one.
Rofl they always get grown adults playing teenagers in highschool. Not sure why. Unless Buddy just kept failing school... lol! But then the majority of them are clearly older than teenagers.
Christine was my first SK movie, which led me to my first SK novel - at 9 years old. The book, of course, scared me far worse, and tickled me infinitely, because it mentions my hometown. It’s been a nostalgic favorite ever since that first viewing
I was 11 when I read the novel, I LOVED IT & was hooked on SK from then on. Imagine my surprise & utter joy when I found out there was a movie too.! I still have that book & I've reread it a half dozen times since I found it in a second hand shop while on holiday in the Scottish Highlands in the late 80's .! That was a good holiday.! 😉 😉 👍 👍 👍
Me too man me too. I read this in high school, inspired one of my classmates and friends to read it, and it grabbed me and did not let go. Sure, the film is creepy yet entertaining and in some ways hilarious, a possessed vehicle, but the book goes much further than a possessed car, that is what is so great about it. It elaborated more on the characters as well as the car rather than just playing something out for show.
If I was a car me and Christine would be sharing the same garage, I would always be pulling up to her rear bumper and honking my hooter 😍 😍 There would definitely be a squeeky sound coming from her rear suspension 😁 😁
Christine and Arnie were both damaged. As Arnie fixed Christine, the car fixed and protected him...they were soulmates. Both Arnie and Christine weren't villains in this story...it's more of a tragedy as it reflect bullying, emotional isolation and abuse. Ultimately, Arnie 'felt' betrayed by everyone, and empathetically, Christine was the only one who understood his pain. In the final junkyard scene, we see Christine trying to repair itself. If there were ever a sequel, we would find Christine sitting somewhere as we seen it at the beginning of the movie...battered and awaiting it's next lost soul caregiver. If we were to look at Christine as more of a 'dog' that Arnie nurses back to health, then we would see the parallels.
I disagree. I believe they were the villains. The car tried to kill his girlfriend alienated his family and his best friend along with killing all the bullies.
Don't get me wrong, I do believe that many of them were 'bad' in some way. And even though Arnie 'pushed' his girlfriend and best friend together, in Arnie's eyes/heart, they betrayed him. A lot of this is a matter of perspective...Arnie's, his friends, the bullies and Christine's.@@bobsacamano7653
I can totally relate to the deleted scene where Arnie loses his mind and starts crying in Dennis's Charger, with all the bullying I have encountered in elementary school, all the way to high school, and with my extended family continuously beating me up both mentally and emotionally, I've had my unleashing moments as well, I just wish they left that scene in, it was really good!
Not just to be bullied by those at your school but by your own family as well? I am so sorry man, hope you are doing much better, and I hope you at least had some support growing up.
A line of Darnell's that I quite liked was referencing a man who owned a car like Christine, who was so mean that you could pour boiling water down his throat and he'd piss out ice cubes. This doubly indicates he'd met LeBay (and by extension, Christine) as well as Arnie's future behavior under Christine's influence.
Darnell also says the guy killed himself in the car, if that was LeBay it happened just six weeks before. Surprising Darnell didn’t recognise Christine as the same car, especially once Arnie had restored her. In the book Dennis explains it IS Lebay’s car.
The question becomes how did Christine get into the weathered condition She was in when Arnie found her. It was obvious the car had been sitting for a long time.@@CycolacFan
I watched this movie as a kid, and remember feeling SO BAD for Christine every time she got hurt. 😅 Come to think of it, I also sympathized with Darth Vader, Freddy, and Carrie. Maybe I was just a weird kid. Lol
Saw the movie about 20 times before I picked up the book for the first time. They were so different that I couldn't finish the book the first time. Eventually, I got into the book and have read it, but felt like what the movie did worked better overall.
The book is riddled with inconsistencies where other cars like a 57 Bel air were used at some points, and Christine is seen as a frumpy car that's a sedan instead of a coupe. The movie actually made the car a looker with more personality.
Christine is acctually still her own evil entity to some extent in the book, she does kill out of jealousy while LeBay is alive and does odd things like when the Vetrans hall guys try to play a prank on LeBay by lifting the rear wheels off the ground she still rockets forward as if nothing happened, LeBay and Christine effectively merge on his passing. George is actually character wise for all intensive purposes Roland LeBay in the movie as in the book he does not appear until Roland's funeral and is a lot nicer, even willing to tell Dennis the full story. In the book the romance between Dennis and Leigh does happen, alot of the deleted scenes are actually close on to what happens, they come together initially out of fear and end up having a fling (the book ends years later so you find out it didn't last).
Was just going to say this (or something similar). Christine is evil by herself in the book and her evil feeds off of Roland Lebay’s evil. In the book Christine literally reaches out to Arnie and he’s compelled to buy her, Christine sensing another soul that she can corrupt. I love both the movie and the book although they are significantly different. It’s one of my favorite King books.
Not to mention the book as I recall it didn't say Roland was POSSESSING Arnie, but more that Christine warped both Roland and Arnie into what it wanted its owner to be. The greaser constantly out to get "the shitters" of this world. Hell, in the movie Arnie even uses the "shitters" phrase like Roland does in the book.
Darnell, as gruff and crude as he was, gave Arnie something that only a few had before, and that was trust. I think he truly liked the kid and recognized he was struggling, perhaps seeing something in him that he experienced in growing up that caused him to be the way we see him in the movie. Afterall, he gave him work and trusted Arnie with his own vehicle for running parts. For a lot of people, that's how they are able to show kindness and compassion. I was sad to see the characters demise by means of Christine, but obviously the car was not going to let anyone come between her and Arnie.
I dont know if Darnell did like Christine ...in the book Darnell used Arnie to Deliver his drugs and courier them all over the city ...Christine did not like this and killed Darnell
Note that when Darnell hears that Arnie is using the Caddilac, he grabs the shotgun and goes to defend Arnie's car from what he figures is some jerk who's stolen the car. Even Arnie asking Christine "Why?", indicates that he and Darnell were on better terms. He didn't want her to kill this guy.
Amazing how several or more of Carpenter films didn’t do great at the box office but are now classics enjoyed by many new viewers , I was lucky getting to see Escape from New York, Halloween, The Thing and The Fog at the theater or drive in! Fun times, thanks Minty!
I really enjoyed all on your list, too. Except, "The Thing" I generally don't put his movies at the top, nor him at the top of list of great directors. Mainly because I have a hard time analyzing why I like them so much. Are they just low-brow genre films? Or, are they really intellectual investigations of film language and emotions? Never seen/read an interview with him, and I think he is a real puzzle. Don't forget Precinct 13, Big Trouble in Little China, and even Vampires. I enjoy them, but those are considered junk by 90% of the public.
@@Redmenace96 yes even at the time I remember being alone in the theater watching The Thing while my wife shopped at the adjoining mall and I wondered why more people weren’t in the theater , same with Heavy Metal, but at that time there were alot of good movies coming out seemed like every week, so many to choose from depending on what genre you were interested in, as great as Blade Runner is I didn’t really enjoy it that much at the theater because I had a hard time following, now my mature mind loves it, anyway thanks!
@@thunderstruck5484 Forgot, "Starman"! Dude. That movie blew me away in the theater, and I'm not sure I was even aware that JC directed it. Must have known. Don't remember.
one of mintys best reviews!!! i love this movie, as a car guy. imo, christine was arnies freedom from oppression of his parents, bullies, and even dennis. his so called best friend kept him locked down, reminding arnie that he was a nerdy loser, and needed dennis for support. the saddest scene is at the end, as arnie is dying, he reaches out and touches the car one last time. he didnt care about anyone or anything except that beautiful plymouth fury. that car was the only thing in his life that didnt let him down. if a sequel ever happens, i worry that it will be a terrible modern take on this classic film.
With a 98 plymouth minivan😆 (25 year old vehicle in the movie and all). It's hilarious how us car guys kinda don't mind a demon-possessed car that fixes itself and focus on ither parts of the story😆

John Carpenter Christine is my all time favorite movie and it still holds up and I love it next to A Bronx Tale & Con Air as Christine is a masterpiece, and happy thanksgiving everyone
So the book is about a used car buying experience gone bad, with the possessed owner's evil soul in the car. The movie is about a car that should have been recalled as it was built with evil parts. I can easily relate to both. Lol Would love a prequel movie with George and Roland LeBay.
One of my favorite lines in the movie! Is when Junkins told Arnie they had to scoop up Moochie with a shovel! And Arnie said! Isnt that what you do! With 💩 pick it up! With a little Shovel😁
SALEM'S LOT WAS EPIC!!! I love that movie. Saw it was a was young and it was horrifying. Now, it's just a horror classic for me. Just like Christine. And I love this channel because I learn so much about all my favorite movies. YOU ROCK MINTY!!! Thanks for helping keep the 80's movies alive!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Well, I think you did a pretty good job on your take of whether the cut out scenes helped or hurt. I mostly didn't care for them either. In the opening scene that you covered where all the 58' Furys coming down the assembly line are all identical units of the same colour and same model with the _exception_ of a single random unit amidst them. It's the same model, but a different colour. At first glance, the obvious reason which is to have her _stick out_ from the rest of the Furys on the line, but it was actually to make it even creepier (at least I thought so) In (Real World) 1958, the Plymouth Fury was only available in _one_ colour (buckskin beige)!! Yet, in the film, here comes a lone wolf amougst the pack that is a different colour...Autumn Red. Strangely, Mopar had no "Autumn Red" colour code in 1958! The colour never existed which makes Chrisine even more mysterious! I do believe Christine "loved" Arnie as much as Arnie loved the car. All you need to understand that is how she reacts when he passes on. Her head-lights fade to black and her last words are in the song "Pledging My Love" she plays thru her eerie greenlit radio (just listen to the lyrics) \m/ Did you know Scott Banjo and Brroke Shields were considered as well?
I always got the vibe from both the book and the movie that Arnie was as much of victim of Christine as the punks she ran over---only in Arnie's case, it was a supernatural seduction rather than the absolute terror of being mowed down by a car with no apparent driver. Indeed, in the last moments of the movie, Arnie himself is killed by Christine in her insatiable rage...and after a few beats, the headlights come back on, the engine revs devilishly, the music starts up out of the radio, and Christine's off again, this time avenging her dead lover in the form of Arnie. I can't imagine this movie at all with Kevin Bacon. Can't even try. Keith Gordon nailed this part so completely. Just wish I'd seen more of him over the years---feels like he kinda drifted away after this one was done.
Keith Gordon's still around; he just works the other side of the camera. He directed "Mother Night," "The Milagro Beanfield War" and several episodes of "Dexter."
I've always thought of Christine as a demon possessed car. The fact that (spoilers coming) that Christine slams into can't recall if it was another car or wall and launches Arnie through the windshield killing him makes me believe that this was a demon trying to corrupt a young soul, and during the final confrintation it succeeded and took Arnie. Then proceeded to pursue his friends to kill them too. Afterwards it would continue on to cause more mayham and find another unsuspecting victim to corrupt just as it did with Arnie.
Something many might not know is that this was filmed at the same High School, the year after "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". That was Van Nuys High, in LA, California. A lot of the same students worked as extras in both productions. So if you think the movie is strange, imagine being on the set with Valley Girls everywhere.
@@mexicanspec Nope, it was the shop at Van Nuys. I took auto shop myself in that room. And we had to spend a week in the library as it was closed so they could shoot some of the movie there.
I was in high school when this movie came out. I watched it with a fellow guy friend and we loved it. I don’t think my girlfriend would have liked it though. When I watched it again with my son just a couple of years ago, we enjoyed it very much. The music was great too. Ritchie Valens “You’re Mine” when the girl was choking in the car was brilliant!!
I've always loved this movie ever since I saw it as a teen. And I agree with Minty, Arnie is such a great character and what happens to him is a tragedy. This movie is so much deeper than it seems. Thank you for bringing out these unique point of views that I've never realized even after watching the movie a dozen times.
In the deleted scene, Arnie is lashing out against "The Shitters," which, in the novel, is pretty much anyone who goes against the car, its owner, etc. Great book, great movie. You should read it, Minty!
Fun fact: the girl who played Leigh has an identical twin sister. To play a prank on the director (on his birthday, I believe) they switched her with her twin during a scene. Prank was on them because somehow he knew it wasn’t her 😂
I've always liked this movie. There was a movie a few yrs before this one called "The Car" which stared a black 55 Chevy that was way more aggressive when it came to killing people.
That movie got in my head because of that horn!! Being 9 I couldn't sleep that night.writing this is giving me chills. It's one of those flicks that sticks with you forever.
The Merrell family (Ace, et al) is first mentioned in the book version of Christine. They will later appear in multiple King novels. Excellent episode!
I saw Christine at the drive in with my buddy Tim. We were both John Carpenter fans. We had a great time, but there were a few issues. It was the second of the two movies showing, it was 1984, and we were two 16 year old boys at a drive in together, and the first movie was Prince's "Purple Rain", so every car around us had young couples making out. Being the target of jokes would have been worth it, but luckily we came out unscathed.
Nah, you guys should have made out a bit, it would have been worth it to see the reactions. For example, the scene in "Dude Where's My Car", when Ashton and Seann made out in front of Fabio and the hot model.
Saw this in the Theater on opening day! Absolutely loved it, and it's in my top 10 Favorite movies ( Smokey & The Bandit #1). This movie is perfect the way it is, although the cut out scene with his mother looking in on him sleeping would have been a good touch. Thank you for posting this! ❤.
Keith Gordon was phenomenal in Christine. His ability to manifest arnies emotions is insane. A lot of movies has cheesy acting in these days. Keith Gordon was a very gifted actor and really cared about the role.
@11:22 yeah that final back end motion from Christine looks like Dennis is taking advantage and forcing himself on her😅🎉 the last little shake and Dennis was on top crushing them cheeks 😂😂
I love this movie. Its low budget and cheesy but its one of the first Stephen King movies i saw as a kid, thanks to my older brother who restors old cars for a hobby.
Kids shouldn't be watching movies clearly made for adults, especially alone. The book was much better, and authors should demand movies be made exactly like the actual novels.
@@ernies8828 lol I was 11 and technically my older brother was an adult at the time. And it's impossible to make a movie exactly like it's book. Go touch grass...
No they shouldn't pal not all movies need to be one to one like the book cuz there are some parts of the books that can not work in the film and some are little too much and understandable why there not in the movie and other reasons and no the book isn't "much better" then the movie in fact both are good in there right
@@ernies8828There is nothing wrong with kids watching horror movies as long as they can handle them, I’ve been watching horror movies since I was five or six, same with my sisters, and they raised their kids on horror movies, none of us ever got scared or had nightmares or anything like that. As a book lover, it would be great to have movies based on books to be book accurate, but sometimes that can't happen, because some things just don't adapt well into movies, and some stuff might have to be left out because of time, as long as the movie stays close to the plot, and doesn't leave out too many important details, the movie usually turns out fine, and sometimes little changes in movies can be even better than parts in the book.
I feel cutting the extra scenes out was a fantastic move for the story but also for Carpenter as it became his film rather than a Stephen King adaptation. With Carpenters signature ambiguity and Arnie now walking a delicate tightrope between anti hero and villain, rather than straight up Villain. Am i the only one who feels this is Carpenters best shot film its beautiful with so many contrasts and perfect lens flares
Love the inside stuff.🤩 Here's my take: 1. If Buddy Riperton is young enough to be in high school so am I. 2. You're not going to get a decent car for $250 in 1979. I know. 3. He should have gone after Darnell financially after discovering Christine was trashed in HIS garage. 4. There was a story line where Dennis and Leigh were in a relationship but it was cut out because it would have made the movie too long and it would have changed the dynamic of their relationship with Arnie. 5. Loved Harry Dean Stanton.😇 6. Christine's windows were blacked out so we can't tell if Arnie is driving her or if she's killing Moochie, Rich and Buddy. 7. Arnie's "job" for Darnell is running hot stripped parts and drugs. That's why he had an alibi for the attacks. 8. In the book Christine's odometer goes backwards. 9. When Buddy gets his I'm, "Couldn't happen to a nicer guy". 10. Both Darnell and Artie's deaths are different in the book.
You absolutely could get that car for $250 back then. In all likelihood a $50 asking price would be more realistic, but the caveat that the "car is officially an antique" may have lead to asking for the higher price.
From my understanding both in the film and even more so in the novel, the reason why Arnie is (to an extent) nasty to Denis is because Denis is almost the opposite of Arnie. Denis unlike Arnie is sporty, is more attractive, has a higher status of popularity and has a decent relationship with Arnie’s own parents. In other words, Denis is closer to what Arnie desires to be. Denis is almost a 96% percent right turn of Arnie is and how he’s treated. And because of those differences there was a level of jealousy and anger in Arnie too. In the movie it’s more ambiguous as to whether or not Denis is aware of Arnie’s jealousy and anger, but it’s made more clear in the novel Denis knows about how Arnie feels. And as for the reason why Denis hangs-out with Arnie is partly because he feels bad for Arnie and knows that Arnie needs someone to cry to. In addition to that, Arnie is also highly smart and is better than Denis in most academics. However, there might also be a possible third motive for being with Arnie and that’s to make himself look better in comparison which would explain why Denis gets sidetracked when Arnie starts dating Leigh. This possible reason was made clear in the novel, but not as clear in the film. Although if it is true of both, then in neither one is Denis all that good of a friend and it would make him selfish.
I read the novel twice. Once at home during my sophomore year of high school, and then once while I was doing a short jail sentence. Read a few other SK novels as well.
Any version of this movie I haven't seen before is a welcome surprise and disappointment. I absolutely love the movie christine. The idea of a car being hunted and killing people, is just an original idea for back in the day when it first came out. And I love Stephen King's inspiration for Christine, when he originally wrote the book.
So I clicked on this video thinking it was going to be some remake of this movie. I know I'm old but isn't this the version of Christine that everyone has seen? And again I'm going to say that the book. Christine is incredibly dark and an amazing read, but like with every other Stephen King novel or short story, there is so much on the page that happens in the characters. Heads that the movie doesn't do it justice. I thought this one was pretty good as far as being as close as you could get to the book in the '80s though. So does this mean that there is another version of this movie out?
I read the book long time ago. I preferred the movie. I liked Christine being a femme fatale. No ghosts. She’s her own entity. She is a needy, jealous woman. She is a siren. I think the observation about Arnie loosing his virginity when he says, “OK. Show me.” is pretty spot on. He also willingly fully commits himself to their relationship in this scene. After this, there was no going back. There is no doubt a sexual aspect to car culture. Those metaphors play very well in this movie.
The only scene I would have kept was the mom going into Arnie's room while he slept. I remember thinking she was unusually cold throughout the entire film when I first saw it and that really helped to soften her up a bit and allowed the audience to sympathize with her genuine concern for his well being.
I have been obsessed with this movie ever since it came out. One of my favorite car movies.I read they destroyed like 25 1957 Plymouths making this movie??? (Said it was easier to find 1957s than the actual 1958 Christine portrays...)
Totally agree with you Minty, I love the theatrical release of this film. The special effects are so awesome in this film. Part of me wishes I didn't know about the sexual references of the transformation with Arnie & the destruction of Christine. Goes to show some things were always meant to be deleted. Because once you know it is hard to delete it from your memory!
so the glass to the stomach. The shop they crash into had glass windows and it makes perfect sense that arnie would land on a pieces of glass from that shop.
REad the book and saw this in the theater in the '80s. Going to get the book and rent the movie and have lovely weekend walking down memory lane. Haven't read/watched it since! Thanks for the tip, Minty!
Such a great movie Keith Gordon who played Arnie did a remarkable job his acting was so good and believable I noticed when he what's doing his transformation he wore a red jacket and shirt which symbolizes power and anger in which Christine was the color red also
he wore it because of rebel without a cause. Its alot like james deans jacket in that movie. In the 50s the coolest man on the planet was his character in that movie. Arnie transforms into a cooler version but more like the 50s style like the car.
The Fury is in my opinion the most beautiful car made in the 50s. And, although red was not available in this model year, it looks perfect in this car. So, why Arnie wouldn't buy her? I would..
Also, yeah....there are a ton of metaphors. Like, when Christine is rolling off the assembly line, her mirror tilts like a lady slightly looking behind to see a man walking behind her, and then he stops her, looks under her, like up her dress, so she bites his hand. Lots of stuff like that. Her being rust ware like a human Arnie sees past the scars or age to see her inner beauty. Loosing his glasses to me is like once I was blind, but now I see. The smashing of Christine is supposed to be like she was R Eh Pee E. D. YT rules read between the lines there or Ray Ped...yeah, bad word. That ending has had me waiting for a part 2. Well, ty Sorry for an additional comment.
