A statue of Christopher Columbus was vandalized in San Francisco on Sunday, a day before Columbus Day. The statue was covered with red paint and graffiti, with the words "Destroy all monuments of genocide" and "Kill all colonizers" written on its base.

I think it's right...how can you say you discovered a place where humans already lived and not give the natives any credit. He saw them as less than Human. He did a lot of messed up things and he should not be considered a hero for what he did. The truth should be taught about this guy and many other people who were considered heroes but did a lot of f**ked up sh*t. Even in South Africa, we learned about Christopher Columbus in our schools but we're never taught about the many great things Africans did. But atleast you'll never see us worshipping the people who brought slavery into our country. We broke down all the statues of the leaders of apartheid. They should do the same in America.

But yes what is being done to some immigrants in South Africa is not right at all...it's terrible. South Africa is far from perfect. We still have a long way to go. And you can't blame all Black South Africans for the actions of a few...if that was the case...that means I can blame all white people all over the world for slavery, racism, murdering millions and stealing land...but it's not gonna solve anything. South Africa is a huge place....these attacks were not all over South Africa, they were happening in some places. I'm not justifying any injustice committed by the people who did these horrible things at all.

Columbus was from Italy, and Italian Americans tend to see him and Columbus day as a celebration of their heritage. That's what the comment was about. Also his legacy people celebrate is full of lies.

@@oldmanwaterfall First of all Columbus was born in Genoa and it is true today is Italy, but at that time there was no Italy, there was the republic of Genoa where Columbus was born, in addition Columbus lived part of his life in Castile and died there, his grave is in Current Castile Spain his children were born there and all his descendants are Spanish today a direct descendant of Columbus is left alive, who is called just Christopher Columbus Carvajal, today he is admiral of the Spanish Navy and is Duke of Veraguas (he is a Panama province, there is a long history there and I prefer not to tell it to not extend the comment), so it seems ridiculous that they only put Italy, like an Italian party when all he did for Genoa was to be born there because all his achievements they are and will be in the name of the Crown of Castile, I think they should include Spain if history is respected as it is.

They were exporting goods back to their lands. Christopher Columbus never set foot in the United States, it was Central America, South America, & the Caribbean.

What people get wrong about the tale of Columbus is, they assume we were civilized by that point in history. When in reality, both the Europeans and the Native Americans were both just cavemen, with more complex language and tools. Our standards of living were different, our morals were different, and really, all we had learned was sea travel.

Exactly. If the Natives had boats they would have been sailing to other lands, too. And they didn't even respect each other's turfs, constantly making war with each other. @@themoonsanus7213 Most Native Americans died of disease before ever seeing a european, wasn't really columbus' fault for most of the deaths he caused since it was basically going to happen. Even then a lot of tribes were violent and life was not good for them. If I am remembering correctly the main malicious thing i would fault columbus for was the lunar eclipse thing, since that condemned a tribe to a food shortage.
