I just tried this on a Dell Latitude 3150 with 4GB Ram, Intel HD Graphics, 7200rpm HD (10ish year old school district special) and everything seems to be working fine, was able to Enterprise Enroll it. Just did this to my wife's old netbook(circa 2015ish). Hp, dual core (pre-ryzen) 8gb single channel ram, small 32gb emmc hard drive, couldn't run windows updates and Linux works great(mint/mx) but it's not worth putting a new drive in, so it sat for about a year with no use. Great Chromebook experience. All hardware works(wifi, Bluetooth, brightness and sound. Super snappy. Dev/Linux works ish. I think if you set your expectations reasonably, this would work for about 90% of what most people need. If you just want to do browser based tasks/media or have kids or elderly family that need access to a PC... This is the solution! About to try it on some old desktops! Great experience.

The problem with ChromeOS Flex, is that google removed Play Store. I've installed it on a REALLY old laptop (pentium dualcore, from core 2 duo era, I think) it doesn't have virtualization so I can't use Linux Mode. Without play store and Linux Mode, this system is useless.
@nicolas-nightstar5617
@nicolas-nightstar5617 Год назад
That happens to me too. I use native chrome apps in flex, like sftp, jstorrent and emulators in javascript. The problem is that google stopped supporting them for 2022 in favor of PWAs. And it is the worst mistake you can make. Not all of us want to depend on a PWA to view emails online or for the other uses you can imagine. Yes, in chromebooks they can use android subsystem and in flex we have linux virtualization, which I have tested and for light linux applications it works fine, but for Steam or Emulators like Retroarch, it reduces performance a lot. Ironically, Retroarch Web works better for me than retroarch emulated in ChromeOS Flex... In my case, I use ChromeOS Flex for Stadia, Xcloud and GeforceNow (which work very well) and for Steam I use Linux PopOS.

@@slavvoslava4694 If you want to use android apps you can use FydeOS. It's the same as Flex but it lets you choose which drive to install it on, it has dual boot and it's compatible with linux and android. In my case I don't use it due to privacy issues and personal ideas that I keep to myself. Hopefully flex will implement all these improvements that FydeOs has in the future. In my case I use flex it because I need it for Google Stadia on PC. In windows I have a lot of Stuttering and there is no way to solve it. with ChromeOS Flex it works perfect. GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming also work very well. And I also use flex a little because of the little desire to experiment that I have left.

For an elderly person who started with the ease of android and needs to use desktop, is not interested in gaming and just wants the basics... ChromeOS/Flex is the best option. My parents had a hard time learning to use Windows. Linux (even the simplest distribution) had a learning curve that was very difficult. Showing them the Chromeos Flex menu with Chrome, Gmail, Drive, RU-vid Music and others, it was directly a change of attitude. It was to find an interface slightly similar to Android. Nice looking, easy to use. It was a relief and it is the operating system they use in their day to day for basic tasks along with android on their phones. Sometimes, as a user who has tried linux since I was 16 years old ( I've been through Conectiva, Knoppix, Gentoo Stage 1, Zorin, Arch, Manjaro and GhostBSD ) and today I can't get past PopOS because of the ease of use, configuration simplicity it has. And if I want to do an advanced retouch I can do it without a problem. Time passes, we get older and lose the patience of our younger years. I think of the phrase that Linus Torvalds used to say about a unified desktop for Linux in order to reach a larger user base. I think ChromeOS Flex is that unified desktop. The only thing missing is the native software that does not have to depend on Android or Linux. A pity that google has made the decision to eliminate chromeapps. In windows they were useless, but in ChromeOS they would be everything.
@nicolas-nightstar5617
@nicolas-nightstar5617 Год назад
Another very good thing to note is the ability to sync with your Google account. It has happened to me from having to reinstall ChromeOS Flex from scratch, and it was only putting my Google account and having my entire system configured as I left it. On linux I still have my PopOS backup image just in case, and the same on Windows with my Ghost backup image just in case. ChromeOS Flex saves you a lot of installation and setup time.

I think Chrome OS was made for schools. Technology gets slow and outdated and security gets worse overtime. Now you have an OS that's fast, fresh, and security can be handled from the web browser because that's how Chromebooks run everything. Flex is so light it even refreshes older hardware. It also adds more security too because it's web based.

@@Kirby5588 whoa thank you this is really awesome tech then. I really love what they did with it. Given older tech life to help for simple tasks and it also sounds good for kids and grandparents. This is awesome.

If you are satisfied with how windows 10 runs on your old systems, sticking to it is perfectly fine. Chrome OS Flex is aimed at those systems that struggle to run windows 10, although linux and unofficial builds of chrome os are also viable alternatives.

@@Kirby5588 You are correct. It is basically Neverware's CloudReady, which Google has now aquired. CloudReady was originally developed for schools etc as a licensed product to let them re-use older PC hardware. They then released a free version which is what Chrome OS Flex is based on.

ETA, will Flex run in virtualbox? I like playing with alternate OS'es in VB, so I can watch what it is doing in a sandbox environment

Few seconds into the video I was like "don't". Seriously, even an i3 first generation can use a more complete Linux OS and even Windows 10 with tweaks and be much more useful and "offline ready".

One question. We saw that in the selection of the laptop brand to be installed we saw a Google Chrome OS option. DOes that install Chrome OS for us?

Windows 11 on my A9-9425 (2C 2T) with 4gb RAM and 120gb ssd is runs good, but it feels slow so quickly. opening youtube 1080p is pain. i tried chromeos flex and it really good. i can play youtube smoother and scrolling web is less stutter. Maybe with 8gb RAM i'd be okay with Windows 11, but for laptop with no upgradable RAM this is the solution

Does this support AMD/Nvidia graphics? I have a few older workstations, that with a GPU should be fine, they do not have an igpu or the igpu is meant for text only.

This is nice and all and I understand that Chrome OS may be a good choice for casual users but for me personally, I don't really see the appeal. Why not just use one of the many fantastic Linux distros instead?

I thought the same thing I recently installed Zorin OS 16 lite on my son's older laptop for school use. While I see the appeal of this Chrome OS flex OS I think exposing my son to more Linux use is the better option thus I will keep Zorin on his laptop. I do see the appeal for older non-technical users that this flex OS would be beneficial in installing on older hardware keeping it out of the landfills I applaud Google for building and releasing this OS. But it is also keeping people in the Google ecosystem so their motives are not truly humanitarian as they are in keeping a captive market.
