Chronic Diarrhea On Carnivore Diet? Excess Bile, FXR & Inflammation

Do you experience chronic diarrhea on a carnivore diet? Have you stuck at it through the "adaptation" period, yet are still unable to digest fat very well?
Does your digestion improve after eating some rice, fruit, or vegetables?
Have you tried ox bile, digestive enzymes, and every other method, yet have not found any relief?
Well, you may have an issue with recycling bile acids. Rather than not having enough bile, you may actually have TOO MUCH bile.
In this video, I explain the possible mechanisms underlying a condition called primary bile acid malabsorption/diarrhea, and look at some of the factors which may be involved in this.

Watching this two years later and thank God I watched it all the way through. I felt my diarrhea had something to do with my body not producing enough bile because the diarrhea only decreased some when I took digestive enzymes (double and triple the dose). But by evening, the diarrhea would be back. His video talks about the opposite: People producing too much bile and having bile malabsorption resulting in diarrhea. He said these people didn't respond to taking digestive enzymes but I did...for a little while. So I started to click off, but so glad I didn't. Near the end if the video, he talks about a few vitamin deficiencies that inhibit the body's ability synthesize bile. He mentioned A, C, and D. I took a multivitamin containing these vitamins yesterday. Yesterday afternoon and today, I have not had diarrhea. My appetite has returned. I don't feel sick to my stomach anymore and I'm not waking up in the night with painful griping, chills and sweats...and diarrhea. Very grateful for this info.

I have really bad BAM I have yellow watery diarrhea if I'm not snacking on something with carbs such as pretzels or crackers all day. I am currently doing carnivore and it's so bad I am in so much pain and seem to run to the bathroom 5 or sometimes 10 times a day. I still have a gallbladder. I have type 2 diabetes so I need to do carnivore because the only negative is this diarrhea. I bought vitamin A and milk thistle and will keep people updated on my condition for those who are curious whether or not it works or helps. Edit: update after less than 1 hour of taking 10,000 iu of vitamin A and liquid milk thistle drops my stomach cramps and diarrhea subsided. I am dead serious. I will keep updating.

Is it dangerous to try carnivore (Lion Diet) with butter and heavy cream if you have a family history of primary sclerosing cholangitis? The video mentioning duademum and bile is giving me the willies. My Dad died waiting for a liver transplant in 1987. He had ulcerative colitis and PSC. I am trying this for mental health and weight loss.

I was Dx'd with IBS when I was in my 20's (now 66) and I have long given up on trying to find a doc (kept telling me it was in my head, and I kept asking why it was coming out my ass) that has a clue about a solution. Went keto in June of 21', have been carnivore since June 22' have lost ~70 lbs in this process, but my GERD (better) and IBS have never resolved. This just might explain why I have lived 40+ years with gut issues. I have also noticed that within 12-24 hours of a GERD event, I have watery diarrhea. The rectal area becomes sore and inflamed and the rectum bleeds a bit when I wipe which indicates to me a high acid content inflaming/burning the skin. Glad I found this, good information, Thank You

@@OrthodoxInquirer I've heard several people with ulcerative colitis said "lion" helped them....Lion and carnivore are different....only beef water and salt on the Lion, just in case you didn't know. Honestly after what I've experienced with it, I'd say definitely give it ago and see how you feel in 3 months. I've been healing now for 2 yrs on lion then carnivore, about a year each. Just so you know I have no gallbladder. You just can't consume a ton of fat all at once. Start slow, like a tablespoon and see how you do. If after a week no issue add another one. Your liver will learn to make more bile to handle the fat your consuming. Just need to go slow so it can adjust it take time. I'd also recommend having your B1 checked or just take a professional grade B1. Just my experience, and Elliot knows what he talking about. Happy New year and good luck!!

So, do you have to keep taking it or did it permanently fix you? Can you tell me which product and more information. I had considered milk thistle thinking it might module the liver or something.I tried SIBO herbs and they did nothing. In me I think it is autoimmune though. I got dry eyes and diarrhea and digestive problems at the same time, and I have small fiber polyneuropathy. I think the diarrhea from fat is due to lack of peristalsis. I'm also reading that milk thistle stimulates peristalsis. If the intestines are not moving then they don't grip properly and food flies through. But, with fiber it has something to grip onto with the bulk. But, on a pure carnivore diet and with fat that is going to fly through if the peristalsis is not working properly. If the fat flies through undigested it will make you weak due to lack of energy and when it gets to the large intestines it will cause diarhea. I almost did the camera pill once, maybe I should still do that soon.

Couldn’t it be that the body is doing this on purpose? People are saying that they had this problem for months when starting carnivore but eventually it went away. I’m wondering if maybe before carnivore the liver is inflamed and the bile is stagnent. Carnivore diet could be increasing bile acid synthesis and conjugation (taurine and glycine) and enabling the body to begin excreting toxins in phase III detoxification. So FXR could be downregulated for a time as a way for the body to make more bile and excrete more toxins.

This explains my issues on carnivore perfectly. A year and a half carnivore and I could never fix my digestive issues, felt like it was 98% water most of the time. I basically had no control over timing or being able to hold it. Eating fruits and veggies and moderate healthy carbs with plenty of fiber seems to fix this in about one day. Removing these, I return to the same issues. I don't feel as good otherwise eating the fruit, veggies, and carbs - but it makes my digestion completely normal. I am very interested to try some of the herbs to see if that can help at all. I am generally much happier eating a carnivore diet - digestion being the only thing I did not like.

Around 5 months ago I decided to increase the protein intake and stop adding additional fat like butter to my meals; within some time I became constipated and was having BM every 10 days, my hormones were messed up, now I know why: liver was not flushing waste. I decided to supplement magnesium and digestive enzymes with ox bile and HCl acid; then I went from constipated to chronic diarrhea that couldn't stop. I was having abdominal rumbling all night and then diarrhea every morning at wake up. I was also having a weird bad taste at wake up that now I know I could be bile reflux. @EnnPeeCee BAM. Bowel Acid Malabsorbtion. Your body is either making way to much bill when faced with super high fat /cholesterol loads, or it's not recycling your bial before it reaches colon. Once in colon your body tries washing it out by flooding colon with water. Symptom is diarrhea soon after meals. Try eating white rice for a few meals with other low fat protein.

Not a fan of ascorbic acid or the idea of taking to remedy/temporarily mitigate the problem, but I understand why you’d recommend it for such. The video is amazing - explains this problem with science and clear research. I now have a grip on why this is happening with me on the carnivore diet. I have already been eating fruits along with meat so that I have electrolytes and vitamin C, but I heard thar vitamin C was only really necessary for carbohydrate production, so I thought maybe the acidity from the fruits was causing my diarrhea. I now understand that it was actually the liver/gallbladder secretion thing. I have been taking berberine and milk thistle, seems to be helping a little? Not really sure yet. Will check back in. Thank you again for this awesome content. Please make more!

Interesting, I suffered from a very severe case of diarrhea for about a month. I would have 10 bouts every single day. This makes a lot of since. I was drinking lots of milk (I know realize I’m allergic) which causes the intestinal inflammation. I was also eating only grain fed beef which has a poor omega ration = more inflammation. I came from a vegan diet of 7yrs so my body was probably unfamiliar with how to deal with 3lbs of animal protein and fat every day. It ended up going away after a month after changing to high quality foods. Then I got constipated, that lasted for about 6mo, it was very severe as well. Now I am doing ok digestive wise. Not perfect but ok :)

EO the Helpful Carnivore! Any other carnivores here always notice cats chewing on grass and plants? Dogs eating dirt chewing on everything under the sun? 95% carnivore his been the best for my health so far. Strong herbal teas and green plants. Alittle rosemary or horseradish does me good. I think even wolves chew on barks of trees now and again. It’s not “food” but your gut is basically a compost pile and needs microorganism to compete and balance each other out.

I had awful IBD to the point of I couldn't even finish a meal sometimes without running to the bathroom before starting keto. Keto with leafy greens completely fixed my gut bacteria and it was incredible to actually "trust a fart." Which was something I hadn't been able to do for nearly a decade... If you know, you know! Since starting carnivore 5-6 months ago, the diarrhea has returned roughly every day or two on average. Albeit, not nearly as severe as before starting keto, but still enough to seek some answers and led me to finding your video. The bile acid theory definitely seems to line up with my issues currently. I think for folks like me, who aren't affected by plant toxins, a small amount of fiber from veggies on a ketovore-type diet is really what'll lead to homeostasis of my gut biome. Only time will tell, but it was nice having solid stools every BM on keto. I truly think a meat heavy keto with a little vegetable fiber will do the trick! My fingers are crossed and I'll try to remember to report back after a few months of reintegrating leafy greens and potentially some broccoli and cauliflower to let you all know what comes of it.

@@Sarahizahhsum Yep, very regular after switching back to meat-heavy keto with some greens and nuts. Also, I don't incorporate veggies or nuts into every meal. Oftentimes, if I do eat breakfast (which is only occasionally), there's no fiber whatsoever and a lot of times my work lunch is devoid of fiber, as well. Just having one meal out of my day or every other day with a little bit of fiber has normalized everything once again. I think, for me, even just the smallest amount of fiber helps my intestinal transit slow down to a healthy, normal pace.

I hope this works, I’ve went on keto or close to carnivore multiple times and I always have this issue. You mentioned several words that peaked my interest: I have Crohn’s and in my last two colonoscopies the report said my ileum was inflamed. I know I have a very hard time getting enough Vitamin D but thru a lot of labs, I have been able to settle on a daily dose that is about 2.5 times normal. My Vitamin D levels in my blood are normal at that level. My plan: (1)increase Vitamin C first (I will continue this thru out), (2) increase vitamin A (back off on this if not affective), (3) start taking the herbal remedies you mentioned… 1by1. If this resolves, then this cure may very well improve my Crohn’s overall. BTW I take Humira 1per 2 weeks. Fingers crossed! Thanks

EO’s more recent videos discuss oxalate dumping as another reason for diarrhea at any point during the carnivore diet. Often, the oxalate dumping happens later (or even earlier before even starting any elimination diet, Sally has given that a different name), like with me, 9 months in, chronic diarrhea for 2 months. I’m mitigating by eating low ox foods like black tea, cocoa and cinnamon but I’m also trying herbs, probiotics, fibers, lemon juice. There could be multiple issues involved. The circadian rhythm piece is fascinating and not to be ignored. Our light diet is everything. Look into quantum biology. So many commenters are describing classic oxalate dumping symptoms. Update: diarrhea stopped, yay, plus starting B1 protocol, cutting back on B1-depleting tannins in tea and coffee and cocoa. Cheers.

I had quite disruptive and baffling loose stool for a couple of months on carnivore - it's only recently that it's stopped, and it seemed to coincide with me stopping drinking coffee (I gradually omitted other things too but this was the one thing that really made a huge difference and seemed to mend my bowel somehow). I also gave up all cow dairy as I seemed to develop an increasing intolerance of it. I'm just fine with sheep and goat dairy products however, and can have goat's butter on my steak with no issues. I say this was baffling because I found that, whilst I'm perfectly fine with pork generally, I don't do well with bacon or cooked sausage (deli meats like salami are fine though, and fatty shoulder steaks etc!) I can eat fatty beef steak and organs with no issues, but the higher fat % mince can send me to the loo, which suggests that this can be something to do with fats more generally maybe, or just rendered fats, but then I can cook in beef dripping and lard with no issues lol! I don't really know, but am hoping to be able to reintroduce beef mince back into my diet as it's cheaper than steak! Since the fast-track pooping has stopped, I'm enjoying carnivore much more, and it feels much more livable with!

Over the holidays introduced blueberries and noticed my stools were noticeably less loose.I may begin introducing beets and beet greens back in my diet and milk thistle is easy to get in various forms. The concept of toxicity of plant oxalates and lectins is relevant but I'm convinced the answer to inflammation control lies in moderation and self awareness...Too much of anything can be harmful.

But why do we need to supplement those things. Shouldn’t it somehow work with someting carnivore as well? Just thinking, if we wouldn’t have supplements, what would we eat to feel good?

Comment update: Long post; I hope all the text makes it, AND A TMI warning. I went carnivore to see if it would resolve acid reflux (20 mg of omeprazol 1x/day), thrush, and to lose my final 15 lbs. to my goal weight. I was carnivore for 2 months with constant diarrhea so bad I had to wear incontinence briefs 24 hours per day (I had several accidents, and leakage, up and down throughout the night and needed the constant protection). I tested negative for c diff. For 1 week I took 150 mg of milk thistle 3x/day, bromelain 500 mg 1x/day, and tributyrin 500 mg 1x/day. Nothing helped. For 3 more days I added potatoes and other veggies. Didn’t help. I was at my wit’s end, feeling very bad. Self diagnosed I had dehydration symptoms. I already knew diarrhea causes dehydration, but I wanted to know if the opposite was true, whether dehydration causes diarrhea, and google said yes because of depleted electrolytes. I don’t drink anything but water and ate tons of salt, but I guess that wasn’t enough, and I had enough of this crap, literally. This Friday before bed I drank 20 oz of Gatorade. Saturday morning I drank 33.8 oz of Pedialite and another 33.8 oz throughout the day; I also drank water. I stopped taking milk thistle, etc. I ate 2 scrambled eggs, 1 cup of jasmine rice, and a small banana (BRAT diet) around 10 AM. No diarrhea for 8 hours!!! I ate again at 6:00 PM, two scrambled eggs, dab of shredded white cheddar cheese, 1 oz of corn chips, 1 cup of brown rice, a few bites of pinto beans (couldn’t help myself). I took 2 citrucel caplets that evening, wanted to bind my morning stool. At midnight I had lots of gas and had a BM, very loose, little liquid. I finally slept the whole night. Today is Sunday morning. I’m not wearing an incontinence brief. Went to the bathroom twice, loose but not diarrhea. I’m feeling much better. Acid reflux never got better and thrush went away after talking 2 courses of a diflucan prescription. I’ll drink a third bottle of Pedialite throughout today and feel good enough to go to my cardio workout at 10:30 AM, wearing regular underwear. This has been a journey. I won’t go pure carnivore again. I lost 10 lbs. and will maintain my weight loss eating Whole 30. I know Whole 30 is not for weight loss and is an elimination diet for 30 days, but I did Whole 30 several years ago and lost weight and coming from my recent experience on carnivore, Whole 30 is paradise. BTW, I only drink water, no coffee, I take daily a b-complex, probiotic, vitamin A and D.

I have been scouring RU-vid for answers on stopping the diarrhea that started as soon as I went on the carnivore diet over 3 weeks ago. I have been truly frustrated as nothing I found stopped it. Then I found this video and was very hopeful that trying vitamin C just might work. It did hallelujah! I’m going to show this video to my doctor and educate her too. I’m so thankful for this help. 👍

Just taking vitamin c resolved your diarrhea? Did you have to take the other supplements he suggested as well?

Can you have this excess bile issue with no gallbladder? I assume so , since the liver still produces the bile.

I had loose unformed bm's for 21 years before CV. Totally completely emptied in the morning after coffee. On CV same complete emptying, just liquid diarrhea. Ive found either antidiarrhea tabs or eating a lot of peanut butter, with or without sugar, firms up like 25 years ago. 7:11

Omg this makes so much sense! That’s why the diarrhea stops when I have kale. Oh my gosh it’s so bad on carnivore ! I have to go back to keto at least with kale Thank you for making this omg this is the only video that makes sense

Not that I have read every comment. But what happens with a person with possible bile disorders with no gallbladder

I suspect this is the reason of my chronic diarrhea on carnivore. Does taking probiotics make excess bile worse? Last time I took probiotics I pooped bile 😬 Also, I drink 2 tbs ACV in water every morning & ACV is supposed to increase bile production. Would that make it worse for someone with excess bile? I have always had gut problems regardless of my diet. Maybe not diarrhea, but I've had a bloated, protruding lower belly all my life, even as a kid. I look like I'm a few months pregnant. I don't know if I have crohn's disease but I must have something. I've always known that I don't absorb vitamins well because we all ate the same meals in my house and I was the only one with peeling nails, so it was not a dietary deficiency, but a malabsorption problem

I'd love to hear about the ACV possibly making things worse

I had diarrhea for a week. I have had it whenever I had drastically changed my diet in the past however, so I figured it was due to diet change.

Guys for those with diarrhoea, instead of beef or red meat, try lean Chicken breast everyday 3 times,, diarrhoea goes away straight away and thank me later

Is it ok to have diarrhea just in the morning once a day everyday in a 20 minute window? Been carnivore 1.5 years no solid BM in Months. Meat with some diary, 1 large coffee in the morning, 2 gallons of water a day. Eat once a day. in a 30 minute window. Before I switched to this lifestyle I would get constipated once every couple weeks.
