For years I did juicing with very high oxalate veggies, drank 6 cups of strong British black tea daily, and ate bags of walnuts, almonds, and figs. I had horrible joint and bone pain and endured a total hip replacement. I saw a video with Sally Norton explaining that oxalates can impact the thyroid. Even though my blood work said my thyroid was OK I had lost the outer edge of my eyebrows and found it impossible to lose weight. I started a low oxalate diet, cut out the black tea and in one month I lost 10 lbs with no other diet change. I had no idea what the dumping syndrome was until suddenly I experienced the worst bladder and urination pain of my life. My urine was cloudy with bits of tissue floating around in it. I was moaning with pain when I came across this video. I then drank a bunch of lemon juice, water, and apple cider vinegar which eased the pain. I have since ordered all the recommended supplements, drinking 90 oz of water daily. Today I experienced symptoms of potassium deficiency, took some potassium citrate, and felt much better.

B1 and potassium helped me tremendously with the pain of the crystals under my feet, 1 square of dark chocolate slows the dumping down for me indeed. When I started full carnivore I did not know this, the need of going slow. Fainting, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea for weeks. It nearly killed me, it was horrendous. Thank you EO for making this clear!

Ingrid, this happened to me by accident also. I wasn’t eating many vegetables but since I didn’t know about oxalates, I didn’t realize the other non vegetable foods & supplements that contained it and those may have been what dropped me below the threshold at which dumping begins. In hindsight, I was dumping gradually without realizing that’s what it was. I then overdid an Epsom salt bath which caused a massive dumping episode flooding my system with toxic oxalate . It has been 14 days now of relentless dumping and managing of the secondary problems that result from electrolytes being depleted. I am having a lot of heart Irritability especially at night when histamine is also being released at a higher level. How did you manage? Was the dumping gradual or severe? Did you add back any other low med ox carbs or did you tough it out staying BBBE only with the exception of the dark chocolate to temper the dumping episodes?

@@trix4487 I ended up at the ER 2x with scary heart related episodes but of course by the time I was seen I was not in the middle of an episode and nothing was caught on monitoring and they didn't believe me when I mentioned oxalate dumping...but I have been able to get the dumping episodes under control by following an animal based diet that adds back in small portions of low to medium oxalate at each meal and supporting my body with minerals, primarily magnesium every 4 hours and some calcium, potassium, sodium ...but the magnesium always calms down the heart palps/racing heart. I have since discovered I also have a Mycotoxin issue that apparently can be tied in with the oxalate/histamine issues so trying to find a specialist (virtual/online) that can work with me through all of this. THANKYOU Elliot!!! 🥰🥰🥰 I've been hospitalised into intensive care with oxalate problems that nearly killed me several times and had a lifetime of disability. Doctors tell me nothing about the actual cause or how to manage it other than pushing a million medications and see you next time and say its extremely rare (but repeating) situation they haven't encountered before and (its not, lots of my relatives have also been through the EXACT same thing, with exact same clinical markers, same sepsis, same specialists and same nurses in intensive care even at the same hospital and they all say they have never seen this before, Its like some sort of conspiracy to never mention oxalates, they just say "genetics" and "luck of the draw" in some sort of religious mystical vague answer). Its so comforting I can now do something to help cut down on the pain when I'm dumping. Going on the low almost zero oxalate diet has improved my kidney function by over 50% so I am saved from dialysis as I'm now over the 15% function and I no longer pee blood or need to see that bloody hospital again and all my so called diagnoses and other medical conditions are improving day by day. It feels like you CARE Elliot, like a lay carer when no-one else does. Its cruel that the people who are actually trained care for you in the medical world are turning a blind eye and suppressing knowledge. I am so grateful people like you and Sally Norton are getting the word out so people who are extremely sensitive to Oxalates can know what to do instead of suffering and dying young.

Tom, did you have any heart issues like irregular rhythm when you experienced this? What did they do for you when you were in the hospital? I have been battling a recent unexpected massive oxalate dump with the majorly of my symptoms being heart rhythm issues and severe head to toe burning pain. Now the urinary symptoms are starting and I haven’t slept for 14 days cuz of my heart issues. I’m now on a heart monitor and struggling to implement all of Elliotts supplement support but get exhausted I have almost gone to ER but fear that too so tough it out on my own tweaking all the supps and adding back in Med and high oxalate to decrease the severity of the next session. What were your primary issues that landed you in the hospital and how did they remedy them? What is your way of eating now? Do you still deal with the dumping episodes? Thank you.

9/10 doctors study the run in the mill medicine, they don't go deep into the human body and its metabolism, it's basic medical treatments for common symptoms, oxalates are not widely know in the medical world, I've spoken about it to a doc here in Greece, which has world class doctors, he had never heard of it ... 😪

TLDR - Oxalate dumping occurs when the body releases stored oxalate, causing symptoms like inflammation, joint pain, brain fog, and more. - To manage oxalate dumping, consider: - Eating small amounts of oxalate-containing foods (e.g., dark chocolate, nuts) to slow the process. - Replenishing essential minerals: - Potassium: Prevents deficiency symptoms like thirst, rapid heart rate, muscle weakness. - Magnesium: Prevents oxalate crystallization, supports urinary clearance. - Calcium: Binds tightly with oxalate, aids in excretion. - Using citrate forms of minerals (potassium citrate, magnesium citrate) to dissolve oxalate and replenish lost minerals. - Consuming sources of sulfate (Epsom salts, sodium/potassium bicarbonate) to counteract oxalate damage and promote excretion. - Taking B vitamins: - Biotin: Helps counteract intracellular biotin deficiency caused by oxalate. - Vitamin B6: Useful for inflammation-related depletion, common in oxalate issues. - Vitamin B1 (thiamine): Important when the body produces excess oxalate. - Trying taurine: Amino acid that aids in excess oxalate elimination by improving bile acid metabolism. - Using butyrate: A fatty acid produced by gut microbiome that increases oxalate dumping into the gut and prevents reabsorption. - Supporting specific organs: - Kidneys/bladder: Hydration, acetyl-glucosamine to repair mucosal barriers. - Joints: Proteolytic enzymes, MSM, or DMSO cream for pain relief. - Skin: Aloe vera and CBD for irritation relief. - Eyes: Saline solution or MSM eye drops for irritation. - Adjust nutrient dosages based on personal needs and dumping frequency. - Aim to take nutrients daily, with higher doses on dumping days and lower doses on non-dumping days. - Caution: Manage diarrhea with non-citrate magnesium, avoid calcium supplements for constipation, and don't take minerals with oxalate-containing foods.

A year ago I would have thought all of this oxylate stuff was bogus. BUT, after a while on the carnivore diet the wheels fell off the wagon! Up until this point I was feeling the best I had in years! I felt if I was aging in reverse. I had previously been a hardcore vegan and green juice warrior! My health was steadily declining. I transitioned to paleo over time and that helped but carnivore was/is the best for me. But one morning I woke up and several of my old injuries were achey. I couldn’t even put weight on my wrist to do a push up. My whole body felt stiff. Then over the next couple of days I began to feel very lethargic and flu-like. I had severe pain when urinating! I had horrible brain fog. My eyes would burn and itch. I developed a rash in a few places. I had a build up on my teeth. All of this seemed to happen over night out of nowhere! I wish the carnivore community would make people more aware of this possible eventuality. It would have saved me a lot of misery and doctor visits. Oh, and even though the docs didn’t find any proof of a UTI they still tried me on two different antibiotics jic, one of which caused me some new health issues!🤦🏻‍♂️. I am still having some issues several months later but nothing like before. Oh, I discovered too that some of us need to be very careful about consuming too much bone broth as it will convert to oxylates. If I drink too much it is guaranteed that I will be peeing out flames the next day! 😬. Thanks Elliot for the video! People, takes this stuff seriously and save yo self some misery.

Bone broth doesn’t convert into oxalates, wherever did you hear this? I’m sorry but this is total nonsense. Depending on how it is prepared bone broth can cause histamine issues for some people, but amino acids and minerals cannot convert into oxalate crystals, it’s physically impossible.

Thanks for the heads-up regarding the bone broth. I was just getting ready to order some - maybe not a good idea.. Also, I have a long history of irritable bladder. Several years ago I went to urgent care thinking I had a UTI and they prescribed Cipro. Within 24 hours I had neuropathy in one hand that lasted until I went on keto a year ago. I have since learned that when my bladder starts burning to take D-mannose, a type of sugar that we can't absorb and makes the bladder lining slippery. Usually one or 2 capsules will take care of the irritation.

I’m in exactly the same position: dealing with histamine intolerance and oxalate dumping. Was doing Keto for about 3yrs when earlier last year everything changed. I started experiencing intolerances to the food I had been eating years prior. I also started having diarrhoea and also developed a lot of the oxalate dumping symptoms. I’m even inclined to believe that this caused my eventual leaky gut … Last December I decided to go carnivore. Needless to say, Many symptoms subsided. But it’s the dumping which I’m having to deal with every now and again, lasting for days. Things like diarrhoea (which is also another symptom when body is trying to adapt to carnivore high fat metabolism), skins rashes, joint pain and swelling (usually my fingers), red eyes and feeling like there is a grain of sand. Burning sensation in my thighs etc. luckily enough though, the blurry vision stopped as soon as I went carnivore. But I’m not sure how sustainable or healthy is staying on carnivore long term. I’m concerned about cholesterol and electrolyte imbalances.

Thank you so much for this! I was going mad wondering why my body was behaving so. I cut out gluten over a year and a half ago after graves diagnosis. I felt better for a while, but then realized I was sensitive to all grains and carbohydrates. They would increase my heart rate after taking them, so I cut those out too. I lost over 20 kilos on this new diet, but I then became sensitive to sugar, which also started giving me increased heart rate. late last year, I started getting stomach pain/burning after eating with diarrhea and gut cramping. Did a stool test and they found ocult blood. Did an endoscopy but I had no physical damage to my gut. Went back to eating predominantly meat, vegetables and milk and eggs, and I started getting black stools indicating bleeding in my upper GI. I realized at this point the only time I didn't have pain was when I ate eggs and meat. So I've been mostly carnivore for about 2 weeks. In 2:19 the last few days I've began having skipped heart beats, increased palpitations especially in the evenings, bone pain in my left leg and joint pain in my fingers. The heart issues worry me the most. I've been supplementing with magnesium for the last year to take care of the skipped beats, but since going carnivore, it doesn't seem to work. I will try adding back some oxalate foods to see if this helps and taking electrolytes and potassium.

@@Mr.Mirage_YT if you are actually dumping, the pains could certainly be from that. Its something that can cause practically system-wide disruption, literally little shards working thdir way through all your bones and tissues then your immune system trying to get rid of them any way they can. Oxylate formations also hold all konds of toxins and latent bacteria/viruses, it can be a wild ride. I did a lot of research and it was a bit scary going through it. Exercise and hot baths 100% exagerated and accelerated dumping symptoms for me. I still continued strength training but i dialed back intensity and frequency. Recovery took a lot longer. I had been dealing with increasing chronic fatigue and constipation a for almost a year, and then mild IC, which eventually diacovered the oxylste and candida problems by trying a low ox diet, and then also trying kefir and it showing me i had the candida problem. It was kind of a wirlwind and i dont remember the exact order or what caused what, but eventually realized those were my two main problems. Oxylates were definitely a longer and harder journy. I'm 36 and always been ripped and very good shape, been strength training for nearly 15yrs and always ate whole food diet my whole life, starting at a strong bill of health it still took me about 9-10 months to feel normal again. The ONLY thing that seemed to help me was when the symptoms got too intense was a square of dark chocolate, eating some oxylates throigh the process makes your immume system stop digging them out of your tissues and focus whats in the blood for a bit, i would do this to get through work. The IC got a lot worse after i started low oxylate diet, i think the oxylates in diet initially caused it, but then my urinary system dealing with a flood of oxylates during dumping made it even worse! After about a year it went away when the other symptoms wained. It may be a rough few yeara depending on your age, starting health, and previous diet. It goes in different stages during the process, seems to start with skin and over time gets worked out of more dense tissues, even bones. Hang in there. I didnt do anything for the pain because i knew my system was already stressed so didnt want to make it process anti inflamatories, just toughed it out. Exercise would definitely make pain and dumping feel like it went away during and right after, but a few hours later, probably just happy chemicals, but always got way worse shortly after. Lots of water, rest, and keep some chocolate on you to control it. Sally norton and eliot overton are a wealth of info on the subject. Sally even dislodged and reactivated lyme the first few months of dumping. I had a feeling around month 2 something like that happened with me.

Thank you for this series and all the information you share. :) I am one that have been low ox for only 14 weeks and dumping severely since I decreased way too fast. I have found that, for me, I cannot take the B vitamins everyday as it makes my dumping much worse, as did Epsom salt bath. One cup of black tea in the morning has helped ease some symptoms and some dark chocolate. This clearing is for sure not fun, but necessary.

Very good presentation. Two crucial questions are not addressed, though: First, what is the average and range of time it takes to complete the dumping process? I've seen RU-vid Comments quoting 2 years; Sally Norton (together with Elliot, one of the world's leading experts on oxalates) describes herself as being in her 9th year of dumping (she was so badly oxalate poisoned she couldn't get off her couch when she started on a low oxalate diet). Am I right to think the normal range is roughly 6 months to 2 years? Second, what is the level of oxalate at which one can normally manage the fine balance between optimal dumping and avoiding the worst damage to your system (and symptoms thereof) - if excessive the oxalate on its way out can be more damaging than when it was coming in? I've heard Sally say that the normal oxalate excretion rate of the body is between 150 to 200 mg of oxalate per day, which suggests that a low oxalate diet of roughly 50-100 mg/day might be the optimal balance. In my own experience (10 months on carnivore), I find that a low oxalate intake in the form of chocolate 18 g for 70 mg of oxalate and x2 cups of black tea at 25 mg oxalate each, which totals 120 mg of oxalates, keeps me in the zone between feeling extremely unwell (headache, nausea, fatigue) and continued signs of dumping in the form of cloudy urine (not mentioned in this video, but something Sally refers to). But I could probably benefit from reducing the chocolate contribution to no more than 20 or 50 mg of oxalate per day.

I’m doing with distilled water and (honestly who knew distilled water could do this) but it does pick crap faster than regular water because it doesn’t have anything attached to it being pure so it just goes in and cleans house & seems to reek havoc all over your body picking up minerals and moving them out. Even my teeth hurt. I’m getting zings. Even my eyes hurt.! And I ended up with brutal gout in both knees, which are weak joints that I’ve dealt with for 18 years. Thank you for such a clear and understandable over view on the topic. I´ve been following the oxalate community for a long time and also various people who dig deep into science to help people with nutrient imbalances. I am wondering why is nobody who is talking about oxalates taking the time to dig into the harms of citrates as the whole oxalate community talks so much in favour of citrates. It would be great to hear you having a discussion with Morley Robins for ex. about citrates as I have understood that they can cause definet harm to ceruloplasmin. I´ll drop of a challenge for you, could you find other ways we can break painful oxalate crystals apart from citrates (natural citrates would be fine in terms of ceruloplasmin but unfortunately for us who suffer from histamine issues, lemon nor apple cider vinegar will not be possible).

I think this is what has caused my Interstitial Cystitis. And the ER nurse that obviously has some preconceived notions about Marijuana this me that she had done a lot of research and that Marijuana might be the cause of all of my issues. They hadn't even done any tests on me

On carnivore for about a year, but indeed feel very disheartened, ate soo much plants before. Is that why I don't seem to digest anymore, I try eating more fat, less meat, but everything feels like a stone in my gut and I suffer from nausea and acid reflux at night. Followed your B1 protocol, take only kaliumcitrate magnesiumliquid and calciumcitrate. But I'm 59 and really not feeling better at all.

You may need to take Betaine HCl to raise stomach acid to proper levels and/or digestive enzymes especially if you are older to help you absorb the nutrients of food and speed up digestion so it isn't sitting like a lump.

Apple cider vinegar daily. Start 1-2 tsp in glass of water on empty stomach. Also try whole milk organic kefir or raw kefir. Gut health 👍

I also learned from a dr to eat cheese or yogurt - calcium- when u it oxalate food - so the calcium will bind to the oxalate and pass with urine

Your B1 videos really helped me a year and a half ago. I really appreciate your knowledge, it truly is a blessing, thank you for sharing this publicly. Im definitely struggling with oxalates and have definitely had kidney stones a couple times(I always used chinese herbs and drank alot of water and that helped with the pain). I have decided to start the carnivore diet today. I was doing Keto but had no clue about oxalates. Unfortunately I am also struggling with histamine intolerance and have been for 3 years. Its taken me a while to figure out whats going on but I believe thIs is finally the path to healing. Its been so hard dealing with food and being tired all the time. Ive been to 3 different Naturopaths over the last 4-5 years and while they all did provide some relief, none of them knew about any of topics like this. Do you have any knowledge you can share with me on how to deal with histamine intolerance on top oxalates? Im very excited but also concerned for the future because of the 'dumping' process. I am 33 y/o male from Canada. Thank you for all the work you do, this is very incredible information.

I struggle with this too. I've found that my histamine symptoms have got less over time as I've reduced oxalate. When the histamine symtpoms come back, it's usually because I'm having an oxalate dumping episode or something has gone wrong with my diet. I seem to remember that oxalate can destabilise your mast cells making them release excess histamine. I'm currently on carnivore too and still trying to figure things out. Reducing oxalate containing foods has definitely helped but I still have residual issues which I think are related to my body making too much oxalate itself. Removing carbs was a huge help for me but the body can also convert certain amino acids and fats into oxalate if your metabolism is wonky, like mine. Too much broth, slow-cooked meat or chicken will set me off. I'm trying to resolve this with thiamine and magnesium supplementation but I'm not out of the woods yet. Good luck with it and I hope you can make a good recovery! I wouldn't wish this on anyone!

To add on to the Sulfate mechanism, since veggies such as broccoli and other cruciferous are high in sulfur, could this explain the reasoning for oxalate dumping symptoms shortly after eating these as I feel worse sometimes after eating these veggies?

Could be also mercury poisoning.

Yes, it's a plausible explanation. I think I am dealing with some dumping after eating a fair amount of garlic. It's probably not mercury poisoning.

Interesting the parallels between oxalate detox and vitamin A detox. Retinol causes hypercalcemia though so calcium isn't great on vitamin A detox.

I almost died from this not to mention my face and body broke out in pimples that I now have hyperpigmentation as a result. I'm no longer trying to dump them just eating low oxalate foods. It was a horrendous experience. No thanks.

Exercise and the depletion of electrolytes could be an issue. Also the gut biome health and the relation to nutrient absorption.

So.... almonds are high both in calcium and oxalates... what is up with that? Shouldn't calcium cancel oxalates?
