Going from physician to patient following an accident on the same day, Dr. Bal Pawa realized the gap in our current medical system: The vital role of the mind-body connection and self-regulation.
Her story teaches us the importance of taking control of our health and instilling techniques for self-care. One of Canada's leading Integrative physicians and co-founder of the Westcoast Women's Clinic, Dr. Pawa is also an author and speaker. She has been in practice for over 30 years using a unique, combined training as a Pharmacist, Medical Doctor, and Integrative Medicine practitioner which was instrumental in recognizing the need for Holistic Healthcare and disease prevention. Dr. Pawa obtained certification from Harvard Medical School in Mind-Body Medicine and also completed training under the direction of Dr. Deepak Chopra. She has made it her personal mission to empower, educate and inspire people to take charge of their health by cultivating a healthy, proactive mindset and bridging that gap. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

What I discovered about anxiety is groundbreaking. At the heart of all anxiety is a desperate need to CONTROL. What I mean is behind any anxious thought there is a need to control other people's thoughts, reactions, actions etc. To further explain by an example, say someone is anxious about a certain situation, in their mind there is this game going on where the outcome is to be determined by the anxious person. The only way out of this game is to release control of the what the outcome should be. The anxious person will say "ok I will give up control or give up my projections, but what about controlling my own side of the thought game". Well as I discovered the minute you give up your projections and allow external situations(people, events etc) to determine their own outcomes, immediately your own mind starts to rest. Give up control!!!!

I agree so much! It worked for me for a week where giving up control just made me alive and happy again, like a dream state for a week where I saw everything positively, it really felt good. But it also felt almost too good to be true and a week later some thoughts/situation/person triggered me back into the spiral of chronic anxiety… I hope next time it’ll last more than week.. any tip is welcome ;)

Omg you are so right. I get bad anxiety when I get sick. If I don’t recover in a certain amount of time I become full of anxiety and start to get panic attacks. That’s definitely a control issue. I have to lose that control I think I have over the illness.

What about BMW? You didn't mention any of what you did to help yourself! Did you practise deep breathing? Or think of a beautifully calming word? Do you want to change your life, or keep complaining about this thing that so many people have got. As a man thinketh, so is he. Your thoughts are very powerful. You do not need to believe your thoughts. Most of what we worry about never happens. Anyway, even if it did, it might be the best think that happened to us. This talk is a great example of this. You could let everyone here know how you are progressing with your BMW some time after you have put some real effort in. I'm just trying to help.

It is almost impossible to stop thinking about something. Instead force yourself to think about something else each morning and night for 10 minutes. Find something that requires a lot of focus like learning to say the alphabet backwards, or studying a new language. Each day increase the amount of time you think of something else. Eventually the thought your trying to stop, will be replaced. Good luck hope this helps at least a little.

I waited for 7 years for God to help me with my anxiety. I cut everyone out of my life, stopped leaving the house and started sinking tons of hours into things like video games to distract myself from my anxiety. Except the amount of time I put into games made me even more anxious. The things that seem easy for everyone else seemed so far out of reach for myself. I let anxiety get in such a bad spot I lost all my muscle and weight til I physically look sick. The worst part about all of this is my constant telling myself that it’s just anxiety and I should be able to handle it on my own. I’ve lost everything that mattered to me in my life… and it took that for me to realize that I have a mental illness and I need help. Don’t let your anxiety do to you what I let it do to me.

Useful video. In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. Be careful what you feed your mind. Avoid comparing yourself with others, reduce watching negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. For a relaxed mind observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 10-15-20 minutes or more. You can sit or lay down anywhere-anytime. No deep breathing. Don’t fight your thoughts. With practice the mind will relax. Keep a reminder to observe your breath sensations throughout the day and night at home, at work, when travelling etc with eyes open or closed. One more tip is to sit on a chair without moving, be still and observe your breath. Stillness reduces thoughts and brings relief. Like me make this a lifetime habit to have a better life. Best wishes--Counsellor.

@@heresjonny. I thought of some things that might be useful here. Firstly, our thoughts are not really a part of us. They often are not true. I have tried also Byron Katie's "Worksheet". I have read and listened to ideas for a long time now. But this is the most simple way I have found to really reach enormous amounts of truth, compassion and transcendance. The results are incredible. Another thing that might interest people is to do with differences between how men and women think. My partner is 60. He is a very intelligent man. But in the days when we argued frequently, I noticed he would really speak nonsensically. I really couldn't have a logical discussion at all!! I then learned that men see these conversations as very threatening. I was always trying to resolve issues. He ALWAYS thought I was criticizing him. This was never the case. The brain is very fascinating. The fight-flight response my partner can gets into is a response to something he sees as a threat. He behaves as if he is being attacked, quite literally. I have heard that men's pulses increase rapidly during verbal conflicts, and that what I found is quite common. I just read something yesterday, that a man's complaint is commonly women's tactics in arguments. It is not surprising that the ability to express logical thoughts verbally is hard for men. Men have much less areas of their brains for language. It makes sense, also because biologically, men once evolved to hunt and protect others from predators and danger. Men are truly amazing how they react so instantly, and are so focused. My partner loves riding motorbikes... fast. He can avoid situations when riding and driving in an instant. All these amazing skills that men have are incredible!! Focus, strength, stamina, protectiveness, and a lot more. Men are able to be very stable and consistent. It will all increase with age. My partner, and a lot of guys probably got angry or hot tempered more when younger. Hormones are a fascinating topic also. I wish you people all the best with BMW and anything else you discover along your journeys and wonderful lives. PS Women are very complex, so remember they might be more happy to "argue". We evolved to be experts in getting on in groups. That means a lot of talking, listening to different views and coming to a consensus, or resolution. Maturity takes a while for all people, and relationships are often a challenge, especially when you really can't understand how others think. Sometimes girlfriends and mothers are hard to cope with. The main relationship is the one we have with ourselves. From this acceptance we can tolerate others who falter, as we do. We cannot be hard on ourselves. We are doing okay!! Life is all about learning. I was talking to an 88year old lady who I have befriended. She is another generation older than me. With a heart trying to accept and forgive all things, I am far behind her wisdom. She is closer to "God" I think. She said "In the end you love everybody."

It does work - My anxiety caused excessive reflux symptoms that made it hard for me to even breathe. I’ve been meditating daily and been off my stomach meds for over a year as a result. Be patient. Pair it with healthy eating. And most importantly, consult a doc because everyone is different and you shouldn’t take medical advice from RU-vid strangers 🤣

So true I have anxiety so bad that I cannot breathe and I feel like I am choking all the time. I so scared to go to the hospital because of the current situation. I cook good healthy food for myself, no process foods, I try to meditate but I am still not feeling better. I am praying that I will get over this soon!

Yes meditation is helpful and it is good to be reminded to do it, especially in dealing with PTSD and much of it from the healthcare system but a lot of other systemic policies. The online advice is more helpful than what I get from professionals, which was costly in hardship, time and money, leaving me broke and worse off than before. Taking care of myself is needed so I can care for others.
