Chrysler Pacifica Crossover - History, Major Flaws, & Why It Got Cancelled So Fast (2004-2008)

Today's video is on the Chrysler Pacifica crossover! Chrysler had dubbed this to be the 'next big thing' in the crossover segment, and gave it the convenience of a minivan, elevated position of an SUV, and handling of a sedan. They had high hopes for the Pacifica, planning to sell over 100,000 per year, but they never came close and the car was discontinued after just 5 model years, living from 2004-2008. I have found 6 major flaws and reasons that I felt caused the Pacifica to be cancelled. Watch along to see the full life of this crossover from inception to cancellation!

Bought a 2007 signature AWD(4.0L & 62te trans) for my mother in 2012 for $3300 at auction. It had about 125k miles then and is up to 265k now but still going strong and she absolutely loves it. No major engine/transmission work and the worst flaw was a shorted reverse wire that was a pain to find (there's a splice under the carpet behind the driver's seat of all places...). Also had a leak in the sunroof due to the glass being misaligned by the previous owner, probably after strapping something to the roof. The 19in wheels are a touch expensive to keep good tires on and I would personally prefer 17s but she likes them so... My biggest advice is to always,always use the appropriate atf+4 fluid in the transmission and replace both the fluid & filter regularly. The 62te seems to be a lot more sensitive to dirty fluid than its 4 speed predecessor. Walmart atf+4 is only $4 a quart, so it's only $25 plus filter anyway(you'll usually get about 6 or 6.5 quarts out when you drop the pan).

I currently own a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica Touring AWD. It just hit 200,000 miles. I am the third owner, but I knew the previous owners and they took good care of it. So far, in repairs, the catalytic converter was replaced earlier this year, ($800) and the last owner before me had something about the drivetrain fixed ($1,200). (I’m not a wizard when it comes to cars, but I know the basics thanks to my Grandfather.) Now, I’m worried that the power-steering is going out, but I’m going to change the power-steering fluid before I take it to the shop and see if that fixes it. Other than these (expensive) fixes, it has been a reliable vehicle for me. It currently averages 19 mpg, which I wouldn’t think is too bad for an older car. I can say that I will be keeping it until it falls into a million pieces. I learned to drive in it, went on many trips in it and it always done justice for me.

I strongly believe that as well! The combination of a sedan, minivan, and SUV is exactly what people usually look for in a crossover today, but it appears back then not so much. Chrysler has always try to position themselves as the luxury brand and if quality issues wasn't a factor, I believe the Pacifica may have been successful.

I love these cars! They get a fair share of hate, and perhaps I've just had " The Good Ones". I'm on my second: a 2008 Touring which I've had for 2 years. It now has 43000 miles on it. Upon taking possession, I immediately changed out the timing belt and water pump. Since then, the only maintenance I've had to do consists of regular service and a new battery. My first was a 2004 Limited, and was terrific. I foolishly sold it, then bought a new and somewhat comparable similar CUV built by an offshore manufacturer of high repute. That car was expensive to buy, rode like a lawn tractor, was noisy at speed, had a terrible audio system and also possessed flat and hard seats that were uncomfortable on trips. To be fair, the engine was powerful and quiet. I couldn't wait to get rid of it, and after a year I just took it back to the dealer and dumped it.I have never had underside rusting issues, but I take these cars through an auto wash once a week, and have them detailed spring and fall. My first had the 3.5 V-6 with the 4 speed. This Touring feels MUCH faster. and the 6 speed transmission is smooth and well calibrated. I am considering an addition to the stable, since I never want to run out of 1st generation Pacificas. Just my opinion.

I have had 2 of these Pacifica's, and loved them dearly. While they weren't perfect, they were ahead of their time and extremely comfortable. The real problem came down to consumers who did not want to spend "Mercedes-Benz" money to repair a Chrysler. They were very expensive to repair for sure. This left many used Pacifica's with a tarnished name. I totally understand people not wanting to spend $1,800.00 on a simple suspension job back in 2004-2008, but these were solid cars for those who were willing to spend the money.

I bought a used '04 with 130k miles and really liked it at first. Then the famous Chrysler electrical issues reared their head and it was nearly constant. The engine, while underpowered, never delivered less than 23mpg on the highway, ran smooth and didn't use any oil. What did it in was a broken timing belt that caused a bent valve. Mine didn't have the dash rattle or falling plastic and the transmission was a sloppy mess. Overall, it wasn't a bad car but it it's not one I'd buy again

The check engine light on is TERRIBLE for a test vehicle. I remember seeing an old motorweek thing where the cars they test drove had bits that weren't working. In my country stuff like that gets people fired, and you wouldn't see it on a test drive vehicle and ABSOLUTELY NEVER EVER for one handed to motoring journalists. They WILL CHECK these types of things and even some car dealers allow 2 WEEK TEST DRIVES.

Marspeed, I like what you are doing here. Pacifica was awesome, drove 2 and the wife had one with a 4.0 that scared her, because it squalled the tires. The Sports tourer. Whatever that is. It didn’t sell at $39-40k. It did however sell at $28k. After a lot of incentives proving the Chrysler US execs correct, incentives sell cars. MB couldn’t grasp US mass marketing. So the MB parts made it too expensive. But that was a way to get money out of Chrysler US and into MB. It was the one car Sergio looked at and said, the best looking car and you killed that? He found out some idiot(s) had dis carded the rear axle molds and tooling. So, the car was scrapped. A shame. Great driving vehicle.

I think this was a good looking car, not as bulky as its minivan competitors! I also see the characteristic Bosch gauge cluster with the floating needles, from the W220 S-Class, although this is the first time I see it has a GPS screen integrated in it! The bottom line is this: Chrysler could've leveraged the partnership a bit more so as to get the better quality plastics, the 4-speed automatic transmission should've gone already for 5 years and also Chrysler should've been a bit more aggressive in their marketing strategy.

Another major flaw was under the car. I don’t know if Chrysler realized it yet in 2007, but this vehicle and some other Chrysler vehicles had engine cradles and cross members that we prone to rust very prematurely. Chrysler stopped short of a recall, instead issuing Warranty Extensions on the cross members (not sure about the engine cradle). By that point there were many angry consumers.

The 2 biggest issues were materials and powertrain. Just like GM, Chrysler was using cheap plastics at that time in the interior of most vehicles. The engine was underpowered and unreliable. The design was remarkable. 1 other thing is that the description Chrysler made about it was ahead of its time, which Chrysler has a long history of doing, causing financial issues.
@damilolaakanni
@damilolaakanni Год назад
They later introduced a 4.0 V6 which should have solved the "lack of power" issue, but with 250hp, I don't think the 3.5 V6 was "underpowered" for a midsized crossover.

I had a 2008 Walter P. Chrysler Signature Series. I LOVED that car, but hated the transmission. When it worked, the car was a dream to drive. I did a lot of highway driving and it was extremely comfy and powerful. I had the transmission repaired 3 times and replaced once under warranty. It started acting up again so I traded it. The dealership had it replaced a second time. You would be driving down the highway at 70+ mph and it would downshift and lock into 3rd gear. Scared the holy crap out of me! 😂 it would not shift out of 3rd, even when trying to use the autostick. Once you stopped, turned off the car and then back on, it would start in first gear, but once it hit third, it was stuck again. I spent way to much time driving to deal with having to be at the dealership so often, so had to trade it. Other than that, it was an awesome car.

i have an 04 with 231,000 miles and going strong,have had to do alot of work like new rad , motor mounts ,etc. it is very comfortable and attractive and i have always liked it .the interior is a bit small for my crew and i feel it is under powered. i am not happy with the trans,been having issues. also not looking forward to the timing belt /water pump change. over all though i do like this vehicle and would recomend it for anyone who has the skills to maintain it themselves as i do not have confidence in my average automotive repair personel.

My dealer replaced the timing belt and water pump for 1200 dollars. I think I could have saved some money at an independent shop, but felt this was an important service. I really love these cars, and have had no issues with good maintenance and care of the underside. Keep enjoying yours, because for the money there is nothing else out there. You might consider looking out for a good 4.0 Liter with the 6 speed. Fast and no issues.

Wife and I love the Pacifica, especially the dashboard. The dash is sleek and doesn't look like an afterthought like most vehicles out there. The motor may may be a little lacking in power, but I don't mind I am not racing. I now have two in my driveway, one to drive and one for parts. I just wish I could take parts from other models as these cars are getting harder to find. I give Chrysler 5 stars for this model.

I have a 2004 that just turned 170K miles. Runs great. Very smooth engine. One thing to remember if you own one, this vehicle has a RUBBER TIMING BELT!! There is a metal cover over the belt unlike most belt cars that have a plastic cover. So don't be fooled into thinking it has CHAIN and not a BELT! Change the belt when you get over 120K miles. THIS IS AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE AND WILL BEND THE VALVES IF THE BELT BREAKS!!!! Spend the money and replace the belt!!!!!

Great video. I have a loaded up 2004 AWD, Dad has a 2008 Touring FWD. The 3.5 wasn't the weak link, really, it's that old 4 speed transmission from the 80s. These needed that 6 speed from the start. A 5.7 won't fit in the engine bay of these... Dad's 4.0 is crammed in there with a shoehorn as is. With me being 6' 5.5" it's the most comfortable Chrysler I've ever owned, but there's still not enough legroom. They do have slightly better interiors than the T&C of those years, but not by very much. Can confirm the reliability... mine has been terrible. I've had it almost 4 years and still don't have it all fixed. The major problems are sorted, now. Dad's has been relatively trouble free but is high miles now and starting to need some of the suspension work done I had to do to mine.

I just bought a 2005 Pacifica in August at 86,000 miles and I'm obsessed with it. Sure, it has it's issues, one middle seat doesn't fold over, lumbar support in drivers seat doesn't work and I have some problems with the DVD player but it's the best car I've had in awhile. I've only needed to replace a power steering hose.

I’ve owned a 2004 Pacifica since 2007 and it still is one of the most versatile vehicles ever made. With the rear seats folded down, you have 7 inches of space and I have used it for camping as sleeping in the back is both roomy and comfortable. With great features like the sun roof, navigation, 8-way drivers seat and beautiful interior, luxury console and the “Mercedes clock” , it does have a luxury appeal inside. It was ahead of its time in 2004 with a lot of special features. I’m an audiophile, so I especially like that my car.has an auto-reverse quality cassette player, CD player and separate six disc in dash CD/DVD player in addition to the quality AM/FM tuner. Name me another car that you can find like that. A very solid car, it was ahead of its time and would have done much better in sales today.
