A state inspection on this 2007 Chrysler Town and Country revealed that the horn does not work. Simple right? Well we better have a closer look.

You really have what I call "patience of the saints" as well as obvious compassion for the owner of that Chrysler minivan...you put yourself in the owner's place. I just got through trying to help my sister who turns 71 this week with her 2006 Chrysler Town and Country (I'm 68 by the way). I was trying to get her windshield washer working and I determined that it goes through the front control module. She also has no radio sound anymore. Her decision to me was to leave the spray bottle of washer fluid between the 2 front seats and drive without a radio. She does not want to spend anymore money on this 2006 vehicle. It is really disappointing that Chrysler continues to have so many problems with the TIPM and yet they don't seem to care about it. God bless you my friend.

The IPM's are notorious for having poor connections to the PDM. Twist the blade connections slightly and bend the pin connections slightly. Clean both sides with DeOxit. Then if needed go to the PDM and disconnect each relay and connector and clean both sides with DeOxit. It will remove the corrosion and the Chrysler corrosion on the connections. I've never replaced a IPM or PDM yet using this technique. The location and materials were just very poor on these vans and other Chrysler products of this era.

Got the horn in my 2004 DGC working. Note: the relay pin numbers are next to the relay pins and the FCM pin numbers are on the FCM connector. Also the schematic provided by Eric Os. vid match my van. I verified continuity from the horn button at FCM - 17 to battery negative, checked and found FCM - 10 to horn relay 85 OPEN, verified +12V at horn relay pins 86 & 30, then paper clip jumpered horn relay pins 30 & 87 and the horn honked. Given the design of the the power module and FCM my solution was to jumper FCM - 10 socket to horn relay - 85 with a piece of 24 AWG solid wire. I inserted the wire into the FCM - 10 socket and dressed the wire so as to allow the wire to exit the weather seal around the FCM plug body and then put the other end of the wire into horn relay pin 85 socket, and put the relay back in. Tooot! via steering wheel. I chose to not wire FCM - 10 to 17 as the horn button my not last too long driving a relay directly as it lacks the inductive suppression diode provided by the output at FCM - 10. Thank you Eric for your service!

Your bang on in your advice there Mr O about when one thing goes in the TIPM another is soon to follow. We just replaced my son's in his 06 Ram 1500 SLT. First the power windows stopped working, then the power locks and then the windshield wipers stopped working. We ended up doing some tracing and using the test light and meter and while the TIPM box looked good we figured out that was the source of the problems and even after doing some Google-ing around we ready many, many complaints about the TIPM and how it has a case of the gremlins. The TIPM was no cheap piece, we bought one of Amazon and even that was not as expensive as OEM it was still pricey. Since the TIPM swap all has been well, but I doubt either of us have seen the last of the TIPM gremlins. Nice job and good advise for your viewers
@12volttech5
@12volttech5 8 лет назад
+Screamin Demon problems with the TIPM on the 06 Ram is very common. The market value on a Dodge Ram in fair condition is much more than the Caravan in the video. The caravan Eric O is working on is a older model that can be found on the market used for $1000, So let's do the math $600 repair on a $1000 vehicle. At the end of the day its the customer's decision, Eric appears to be an honest tech I'm sure he will give the owner both options.

when the horn button doesn't work, try the key fob panic button. if the vehicle's alarm can sound the horn, you can mark off the front control module, relay load side, etc as being functional. may help cut down which portion of the circuit needs diagnosing!

Eric O , you must go crazy with how many electrical issues these Chryslers have with their TIPM. That's mostly what I see you replace or repair on these Chryslers. I see the odd other things with Chryslers but the vast majority of Chrysler issues seem to be with the ground or TIPM, at least 60% of the time and mostly with Chrysler vehicles from 2004 to 2008. It must drive you nuts!

I think it would have been helpful to hook up an ohmmeter to pins 10 and 17 on the power control module to either eliminate it, or locate, the problem. Then the same on the contacts on the box where the PCM plugs into. It was nice to see your son wanting a hug, and you did not edit it out.

Hello Eric O.! Awesome videos. I had a question/input that may have saved you some time. Pin 85 on the relay is the output of the control module for the ground side control on the relay according to that wiring diagram. Couldn't you have tested for ground when the horn switch was activated? That would have been a quick test before you dove under the dash which everyone hates.

Hi, I live here in the UK and my friend has a Chrysler grand voyager 2008 model. His indicators have stopped working and despite my best efforts we cannot get the fault located and all the garages here just won't look at it because we can't locate a wiring diagram from anywhere, including Jeep in Italy. The other thing we have found is that there is no internal wring /fuse board in the cabin. any help would be greatly appreciated. Love watching you on RU-vid.
@uncmouse
@uncmouse 8 лет назад
well now here is a bit of info,dorman makes a reman fuse bucket.dont know if it has the tipm self contained as opposed to external mount as you have.plus its for an 08,possibly they relocated it inside.there is a few vids here on you tube that show it in various stages of repair/disassembly.what i see are a various bunch of micro relays that makes me wonder if one of them are controlling ground signal internally to output as you checked.could always for zits and giggles get one for your self just to satisfy/see what is in there and possibly have an alternate option.worked on control boards and components in school for e/t and there are some cautions if you do,low wattage. soldering iron,soldering removal tool and possibly a hands free set of magnifier is needed.there is a guy that has made a bypass for the fuel pump circuit but it could also be used here. just thinking out loud and out of the box.there are recalls for these but not on this one,seems they start around 2010 year not sure.

great video as usual. to check to see what portion it was, could you do a simple continuity check from the bottom where to wire goes in, to pin 17? that would tell you if it is a bad trace on the board, or if it is the actual control module. I could be wrong, but I'm here to learn :)

Any opportunity for a Salvage Yard trip for the module or relay/fuse block- or are they fried there too? Maybe a vehicle that was just "rear collision" damaged? "Optical Horn" is a stupid way of saying "flash to pass", throwing a Tech off, making you think it has some fiber optical connection. I wonder if the alarm would have sounded the horn? Would removing all relays & fuses, then rinsing out the box with electrical contact cleaner make a difference? I wonder whose bright idea it was to place a corrosive and explosive gas generating device right next to an arcing electrically charged device?

The engine is not corresponding to the reading that the tachometer is giving. IS this normal behavior when the car is downshifting or is something wrong with the tachometer or maybe some other issue. If I understand that you probed this distribution box pin no. 17 with the battery and the probe didn't light up, then its a problem of power distribution box, right? No external relay needed, Take a piece of wire and jump the input to output on the control module. 2nd option take the signal from the dark green/purple stripe wire you probe and jump it to the control side of the relay. Older van cheap and fast fix first is best! if more things fail down the line then that will warrant a new power distribution. I've had people sink hundreds of dollars in these older vehicles and they end up dying a month later. (Although I do realize that there is a business side to look at)
@JVerschueren
@JVerschueren 7 лет назад
I would just run a wire from the cabin to the horn and supply it with 12V via a 5A pushbutton, probably tapping power from something like the cigarette lighter. Not as intuitive to use, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for most drivers, but it avoids splicing into the car's wiring too much and it's better protected from the weather. But, hey, I'm just an engineer, not a mechanic. ;-)
@Gt403cyl
@Gt403cyl 8 лет назад
at 22:50 couldn't you do a continuity test from the green/purple front probed pin to the female side of the FCM to see if the PCM is the problem?
@JVerschueren
@JVerschueren 7 лет назад
Eric already did. He front probed the fuse/relay box, the front control module doesn't get a signal, so the connection through the fuse/relay box is open circuit. The only remaining test would be to sort of "break out" this front control module and supply a ground to its pin 17. But that would mean making jumper leads for the relevant connections (it would need at least ground and power, possibly some other control signals and the output connection on pin 10) and would be a really time consuming test.

In your opinion, on a Dodge/Chrysler that has not developed a problem with a TIPM, is it worth pulling all of the relays and fuses and spray some "contact cleaner" in the TIPM, blowing it out and then spraying silicon or Fluid Film inside ?

My first encounter with those Dodge Control box's where on my 08 jeep wrangler. Was off roading with. For rocks and stuff. Being gentle cuz jeeps are fragile. Everything goes great. Pull out onto the highway. Flashing check engine light. No power. Pull over to the side of road. Turn off jeep. Turn it back on... Runs fine. Drive 3 blocks ish. Flashing check engine light. Limp it home. Took me 3days to figure out that the trailer wiring harness had got pinched slightly into the exhaust melted. Shorted out the whole power distribution block. I pryed those wires away from exhaust. Fixed them properly. Put heat barrier stuff there. All the jeeps electrical problems vanished. I thinks it's pretty pathetic when a trailer wiring harness being damaged can bring your whole vehicle to its knees.

First thing I do if I buy one of these. Pull every damn electrical connector. Then fill them with Dielectric grease..even the connectors on the bottom of the fuse box...I don't want these issues....

tell everybody in town to bring the new mopar to you from the show room and you relocate the battery away from all that wiring. or cut a cooky sheet to fit between battery and that fuse/relay box

I've watched several of your videos they're pretty good it amazes me that the American Consumer puts up with the electrical junk that these car manufacturers can't perfect it's pretty bad and engineering is ridiculously complicated and practically impossible to work on unless your tear most of the car part too bad this is what it's come to I would never buy any of this new stuff.

A relay housing with a switch in stead of the coil (85-86) closing the normally open contact (30-87).

Having inspections in a rust belt state is pure criminal at best. Michigan would lose the rest of its residents if they decided to pull inspections. The auto makers should be held responcible when it becomes clear poor designing is the reason some part constanly fails due to exposure. Why would you ever place sensitive electronics out to be exposed if you didnt make a dealed sustem to prevent environmental contamination. The government doesnt bother with checking on this stuff,and no one in the industry his held liable for such stupidity. Engineers are clearly not being educated enough to include weather proofing electronics or the manufacturer is too cheap to spend the extra money to design the electronics to be placed in a water proof box.

I have watched much of your videos and they have helped alot. I have a 2005 town&country I bought it w/127k miles. It now has 177k miles. I haven't changed the transmission. Is it risky to change and what oil do I use? Thanks

Jose Vidrio yes it’s risky leave the fluid the way it is and make sure the level is good and just be easy on your take off
