DUDE YOU RULE!!!! the EXACT issue Im having with my 06 caravan except the driver side light is doing it, at first when you were drawing the diagram for the bulb I thot you were drawing Kenny from South Park lol - I was just getting ready to do the job everyone dislikes doing - electrical - but I figured Id take a cruise on the old interweb first and there it is - 8 year old video still works today, instead of going all out like you did I cut the black and tan wire about a foot from the light and just put a self tapping screw right next to the bolt for the headlight mount on top of the radiator support, one day I will possibly do it the right way but we all know I wont or I would have did it the first time, its working thats what matters never so happy to see a light blink and light up now it will pass inspection - thanks for saving me hours Im sure searching for it, thanks again

I plan on doing this exact same thing. Kind of silly for Chrysler to run all the grounds 4-5 feet to a central stud just a foot away from the battery.

This repair right here is why I recommend you to everyone. I my last 25+yrs the only shops that could diagnos or fix this kind of issue is a dealer garage. Most places do not have your knowledge and know-how and I respect that a great deal. Hey, for 36yrs old you have a better work ethic and knowledge of things that a 50+yr old man with 40+yrs of mechanic background has. And you can handle a good ribbing.

Mine is weird lol. When i put a LED switchback turn signal with a resistor the running light doesn't want to come on, but the turn signal will. Sometimes the blinking wont work and sometimes the solid running light will. This is only when I use a led, regular bulb works fine. Even the regular bulb is a little dim compared to the other side

A huge thanks for your assistance in fixing my driver's side front turn signal! I checked the ground because the light on the dash was blinking fast and a new light bulb didn't fix it. I ran a ground wire from the brown wire of the 3 on the back of the light connection and everything worked just fine. I ran a new ground wire and now I can avoid getting a ticket for not using my turn signal when changing lanes or making a left turn. THANKS!!!!!🙃😊

I owe you a HUGE thank you. The directionals on my 03 Caravan have been acting up and I convinced myself it was a bad PCM. The car is due for an inspection sticker this month and I was just about to lose hope..After watching this video I ran a ground from that black and tan to the body and presto: All lights are back to normal. Interestingly, my radiator fan relay has been acting up and that G102 is corroded to crap...Well, off to get a sticker, then this weekend, I'll fight the good fight and clean that G102 ground up some. I've always had an aversion to electronic diagnostics but watching you blow through this and figure it out gives me hope. Thanks for sharing your expertise. One more year left in the green grocery getter!

Good job. When I am teaching electrical diagnosis I go by the mantra of. "when strange things are happening, suspect a ground issue" and "if something KINDA works suspect high resistance in the circuit" You had both situations and proved it out well. I only recommend a few youtube channels to the techs that I teach, your is one of them.

At first thought I probably would have put a terminal on the turn signal, but thinking about it you did the right thing if one wire broke then others could just messing around with it. You certainly wouldn't want to loss the cooling fan grounds. Well done

Almost six years after you posted this, I found this video while trying to diagnose and repair a turn-signal issue on a 2007 Chrysler Town & Country minivan. Mine is the back left turn signal. Here is what I've found, so far: 1.) The bulb is good. I swapped left and right bulbs and they all work correctly in the right-side fixture. 2.) My ground is solid. The fixture shares a common ground between the tail light, the turn signal, and the backup light. The other two both work correctly. Continuity testing shows all three have a solid connection to each other. 3.) A "hot" lead inside the fixture looks like it may have gotten excessively hot at some point. I believe that this lead is for the turn signal rather than the tail light. Part of the metal appears to have been eaten away, and plastic nearby looks melted. (The right-side tail light fixture does not share this issue.) I'm not sure what would cause this heat issue. (I've checked all relevant fuses to ensure that nothing had ever been replaced with the wrong fuse.) 4.) While I might be able to rig a repair with a bit of solder, I may end up replacing the assembly ($40-50 online, or twice that locally). *** ANYONE WHO HAS THIS VEHICLE IS ADVISED that if your *HEADLIGHT* goes out, check the actual bulb before you purchase a replacement. Turns out that there was an undocumented change in headlight bulb types during the 2007 model year, and while the manual indicates a 9007 bulb, the actual factory installed fixture was for an H13/9008 bulb. Would have saved me a bit of hassle if I had checked what was actually installed instead of relying on both the owners manual and my Chilton guide. Anyway, thanks for letting me vent, and thanks for the great videos. Like a Timex™ watch, they just keep on ticking. :)

Had similar problem with my 07 GC except it was the parking lamp. Checked continuity at the Source (ipm connector) and at the socket hot lead. Dead. Snip at the source and snip at the socket, ran a line and we were good to go! The harness is under the radiator and months after I had to remove the radiator to repair a cooling issue and the harness wasnt looking very happy. Lots of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Bronx pot holes and great roads must have overcome the clearance provided by the not so up to par radiator supports. Great video...., I always learn something!

Great video. The owner probably read on a forum or google that the “fix” was the switch. Gotta love parts swappers. Like the old saying goes: “Don’t guess. Follow the evidence". Other then ‘its easier’ why go with Fluid Film over Heat Shrink Tubing? Wouldn’t fluid film wash off if the car goes through a puddle or decent rain storm?

+South Main Auto Repair True. You have top notch electrical diagnosis skills. I remember the Pacifica video you posted a while ago that had a whole bunch of things fail at once. That diagnosis was intense and turned out to be a grounding eyelet with a bunch of wires attached to it that corroded really bad. I would bet another shop would have replaced the entire fuse/relay block and wonder why they still have the problem.

Giver The Beans South Main. My 2006 Caravan had same problem and same side. I cheated and soldered in a new ground on the right hand side of vehicle by the head light. @murphroberts4891
@murphroberts4891 5 лет назад
"I no that"s not the proper way, but it worked." I keep asking this question: Why is duplicating, replicating or repeating Chrysler's idiocy the "Correct" fix? You "cheated and soldered in a new ground" and "it worked". Chrysler could have done the same thing, the same way and it would have been "correct". If you or I do it, it's a cheat? NO! We don't have the luxury of a stripped down shell of a car, with none of this crap in the way. The only damn reason those grounds are placed where they are is it was CONVENIENT and economical when the Caravan was being thrown together. Now that it's completely assembled, it is asinine to worry about trying to reach this kind of thing. A wise man does as YOU did. Now, you can move on. '

Good find! You'd be amazed how often I come across issues like this down here in Southern California. We don't have any sort of vehicle safety inspection program down here (only emissions testing), and probably a good 90% of the population doesn't seem to understand what a turn signal is for, so I'm usually the one finding the issue for the first time during a courtesy inspection. The nature of my business, though, probably half the vehicles I work on are OBD1 era, so they've had a lot more time to develop corrosion issues.

I'm happy too. Gee what could wrong with mounting an unsealed ground under the battery tray? hmmm. They don't put much thought into it, I'm thinking. Spray on grease soaking bound to help but actually sealing the water out of the ends of the copper wires so it can't wick up in there and cause the green crusties inside the wire is what the factory should be doing in the first place. That and NOT putting grounds under the battery tray.

Great idea spreading the wires over 3 lugs and less chance of a comeback. Loading a bunch of wires onto one connection is bound to create internal stresses leading to fracture. The crusties don't stand a chance with that martian spray on. The location of those earths near ground level is very questionable and it's time those chrysler design engineers called in to the shop to explain themselves.Also having air intakes lower down is another hazard when negotiating flooded roads.All in all a fast diagnosis, nice whiteboard and job well done.
@atschirner

Another fine video Dr. O. I was hoping that you would mention that the fast flashing is an indication of lower than expected current through the flasher.. This is caused by either burned out element or in this case the wrong element was the current path to ground. Maybe next time you can throw that gem of wisdom in. Keep up the great work.

Another thought on the "green crusties" ! Corrosion caused wire failure would almost never occur if auto manufacturers use "marine", pre-tinned wire. Each individual strand of copper wire is coated with a tin alloy which greatly reduces the chances of corrosion. It would likely add >$20 to the cost of the car, but I think most customers would appreciate it.

Quick diagnosis, Eric. I've noticed that that fluid film stuff usually doesn't last too long. Instead I use that rust dissolving spray paint. I know that it would make some of that area black, but I've never seen rust come back after that. Thoughts?

Thanks so much I am having exactly this problem on my 2006 Dodge Caravan. Couldn't figure out why the right front flasher would work sort of when the headlights were off, but not when they were on. Also, the horn beep when you lock the car with the key fob stopped working, but lo and behold it also connects to G102

I bought a tone generator to chase wires based on Briansmobil1 review. Hook it onto the wire and trace it back to the break. Usually saves time of pulling a wiring diagram. Last job I did I traced 2 ABS wires at the abs computer and confirmed a bad module after ohm checking the circuit and scoping the speed sensor. Didnt even have to look up the pin outs for the wiring harness.

This is exactly what's wrong on my 2004 Chrysler Sebring only it's the driver headlight turn signal that's dim. Good thing I didn't change any fuses or relays or flashers yet, but I wonder if this is an expensive fix when it's the grounding/wiring. Such a mess. Thanks for this video!

I knew it was a bad ground as soon as I saw the dim turn signal lamp. It certainly pays to test before playing "parts darts" like the owner of this Dodge did. Your're not alone with corrosion issues. It is also a problem here in the UK with the damp climate and the local councils putting salt on the roads in winter. I use white grease to keep corrosion at bay.

Good video. My 1996 Dodge Caravan Base 2.2l, the signals don’t work. My mechanic changed the signal switch just like your video. I drove it two times, no problem. Then the 3rd time, signals don’t work.

I like the white board. I recognized the symptoms one this one. In marine applications we put shrink wrap as a stain relief on crimp lugs. Check out "self fusing silicon tape". I used to use it to waterproof microwave transmission cables on TV remote trucks.

Chrysler engineers in a meeting on a friday afternoon, engineer #1 "lets run 12 grounds to one terminal, we can save .0003 of a cent per vehicle" engineer #2 "yeah and lets locate the grounding stud up underneath the front end where it will corrode and be hard to repair" engineer #3 " cool lets celebrate the raise we're going to get and have some beers at the ol tavern!"

I just have exactly the same issue (passenger side as well) on my dodge caravan 2007, 180K km. To rectify this issue I just soldered two black ground wires together- one from the turn signal and another from the mail headlamp (10 cm from the headlamp) and it worked for me.
@barrylenhart7240

Just had this exact same issue this week. Figured that that ground wire was bad at the ground splice g102. customer wanted a cheap fix so I didn't repair the entire ground lug. soldered a new ground to the bulb socket and grounded the wire to the inner headlamp pocket area. repaired the issue. hafta keep an eye out for the pacifica ground issues in the future.. thanks from a fellow tech.

My 2000 Caravan had a different twist. Right side signals work, front & rear. Left side rear doesn't illuminate, left front blinks very fast (classic indicator of a bulb not functioning). In my case, though, there was no power reaching the rear bulb socket and the ground showed continuity. The Fix? Replace flasher module (on the fuse block, under the dash) with one from a junkyard vehicle. Six years later, my turn signals work intermittently. Maybe they work today, maybe not. The fix? Remove and re-install (do NOT replace) flasher module (on the fuse block, under the dash). I went through this intermittent problem a dozen times in a month and then, one day, everything decided to function correctly. For the last 3-4 months, everything is working as it should.
@murphroberts4891
@murphroberts4891 5 лет назад
In your case, this is Classic Chrysler Idiocy: Run a ground wire all the way across the vehicle, from one bulb socket to an opposite side socket, when either one could have grounded anywhere. If that isn't stupid enough yet, once you've collected a dozen wires, bind them all together in a single ring terminal!
