Today We are at the Gilmore auto museum in hickory corners MI to take a closer look at the Chrysler turbine car. Lots of period correct ads in this one. Such a shame this isn’t around now. I’m not a conspiracy theorist but Chrysler has been bailed out by the government at least 3 times do you think it was because they killed this program. Think about it a car that runs on Any combustible liquid.

Beautiful car, inside and out. They definitely made the “turbine” design elements throughout the car. Too bad they didn’t continue development. Most car companies destroy prototypes. Sad but true. I wonder how cleanly these would run on Willie Nelson Bio-diesel? Just think if Chrysler had made the regular production Chryslers look like this they probably would have sold all they could make.

I saw a turbine car in 1064 it was in a Ford Thunderbird. The car was at O'Daniel Dodge in Louisville, KY. Everyone was amazed at how smooth, no vibration from this engine.

When I was in high school in 1963, I actually saw this car in person at a car show held at a mall in Santa Clara, CA. It was unbelievably so amazing back then. I loved the tail lights. It made all other cars look old and behind the times. The ONLY car to me that came close in style was the 1962 and 1963 THUNDERBIRD. ESPECIALLY the rear.

Hi Justin, I realize that you produced this video 5 months ago, I stumbled on this video after watching your 1964 Lincoln continental In-depth look and this is a late entry. This video is the BEST Chrysler Turbine car video that I haver seen. If the car had went into regular production, it would have been meant to compete with the Ford Thunderbird, Buick Rivera and Oldsmobile Toronado, (high end personal luxury). When ever a car has a RPM gauge (tachometer) that is in the same dial with a clock, the nick name for that by the way, is a "tick tock tach". Please reply. Dave...

Thank you it means a lot I really try to be as thorough as possible My favorite video that I ever did for the channel is on three people if you have a chance check it out and tell me what you think it took me a solid four days to edit that video but it’s honestly one of the best videos that I ever did and nobody watched it which was a total drag sort of like the Chrysler turbine car I thought that it was the best production of anyone ever except for maybe Leno’s because he has one and he was able to drive it I wasn’t able to drive this one nor was I able to get in it because it was sitting up on a pedestal.. Also if you have the chance to go to the Gilmore auto museum in Hickory quarters Michigan do it because it’s an absolute gem of a place. None of the cars are roped off you could walk up to Duesenberg, Delahaye, Packards the Chrysler turbine car is it roped off you can walk up to it like you owned it and look inside

There was another turbine car that few people remember. Rover Cars of England was heavily into turbines, too, for about as long as Chrysler was. They ran a Rover turbine powered BRM at LeMans one year (1964?), but I don't remember how it did. Very good video, I'm surprised the museum let you do as much as you did!

The Gilmore Auto Museum is amazing. I was allowed to touch the seat. I am going to ask to do it again when the base gets bigger that video is one of my favorite videos that I’ve ever done but I was coming off of Covid and I took notes from people in the comment section saying that I needed to slow my role, and come up with a better way of narrating, but it’s not me.. the video kind of sort of bombed in a lot of ways but I’m willing to do it again I think it would look a whole lot better with the new camera I’m not entirely sure when that’s going to be I’m planning on going back to the Gilmore this year. They have a Tatra as well as a couple will Saint Clair I want to ask to do the Tatra. I know somebody that’s on the Board of Directors and he told me that I could do that car if I wanted to , I’m hoping to compare it to another car but I don’t know any of the particulars yet =)
@61rampy65
@61rampy65 5 месяцев назад
@@What.its.like. Um, I can't think of one single car that you could compare *any* Tatra to! They are so weird, and of course, I love them. Your vids today are better, but this one is just fine as is. I'm surprised it got so few views. If you get a chance, check out Steve Lehto's channel. He got to drive a Turbine a while back, and posted it on his channel. Pretty cool stuff! Here is a fun fact you can use if you cover the Wills St Clair: C. Harold Wills is the guy who designed the Ford Blue Oval logo, along with the Ford script. And the Wills was the first car to have a back-up light. His cars were of very high quality.

I want to compare the Tatra to a Chrysler airflow. They are very similar. I’m not sure if the Gilmore has a Chrysler airflow though. I know they have a De Soto it’s smaller tho I went to Gilmore last year to do a walk-through like a virtual tour of all of the different buildings there or the majority of the buildings there they didn’t have the Tatra the first time that I went to the Gilmore, but I was in the Duesenberg room and it was tucked in the corner and I was like oh my gosh cause that’s a car that has always Ever since I saw it on Leno’s channel I was like man I would love to have one of those and then when Leno said that it’s car from the Czech Republic that not a whole lot of them survive now… Chrysler airflow is very similar to that car and a lot of different ways, except for the whole spine and how it slopes back I was really taking it back at how low the seats were in that car as well as the car isn’t as big as you would think it is it’s not huge.. but I can’t wait that’s one of the things that I really want to do this year =)

One of the problems with turbine-powered cars is that turbine engines are expensive to manufacture because they have to be very carefully balanced and require very close machining tolerances, much more so than conventional piston engines.
@What.its.like.
@What.its.like. 2 года назад
Thank you so much for adding that =) cost was one of the reasons the program was ended. Put the leaps and bounds by God to towards the end of the program with all the problems they initially had aside from the high cost of building the engines and your consumption they pretty much solved all the other problems. They were even able to get the exhaust gases cooler (not cold cold but wouldn’t be so hot that it melts cars behide it). Leno worked with Chevy To design his own turbine engine car and from what I’ve read they couldn’t figure out how to make the exhaust gases color granite his engines making a whole lot more power than this engine is but still that’s saying something.

My gramma's last car was a 1962 Dodge 440, and for Mother's Day in 1963, I'd arranged installation of air conditioning at Tidewater Dodge(Norfolk, Virginia). What a joy to find the Turbine car, which was badged Plymouth, in the service department and I got to sit in the car... Vibration? NOT A WHIMPER running at 30,000 rpm... Some of the Ghia design elements can be found in the 1967 Fury. Another 'experiment' of the period was our 1960 Plymouth station wagon with a 4-cylinder Perkins diesel.

First Harrah is pronounced 'Hair Rah'. The Chrysler Turbine cars were LOANED to museums, not given. And, yes, the turbine engines were disabled and a spare turbine engine went with the cars to also be displayed. One car was on display in a multi-level L.A. history museum decades before the Petersen Museum was built. My mother took me there in the mid-to-late 60's and I saw the car for the first time. We also visited the LaBrea Tar Pits and CBS' Television City. One magazine writer wrote a story of going to Chrysler and being shown the 3 Turbine cars. One was kept in running condition and the other two were parts cars. The writer happened to go out back and there were 5 more Turbine cars, but nobody would say anything or admit they were there. A few months later, the writer returned and the cars were gone. When he asked about them, they said what cars? Two of the Turbine cars were in private hands long before anyone knew who Jay Leno was. Before Jay got his own, he was allowed to borrow one from a private party for his "Jay's Garage" show. These were marvelous cars and it was obvious that they had T-bird roots, especially the front end. The roof was a typical Mopar 2-door hardtop design seen on many Mopars maybe 1966 and later. It's cool that the Turbine full length center console with 4 bucket seats was carried over to the AMC Marlin look-a-like 1966 Dodge Charger.

Distinctive styling and cutting edge engineering are not often found in the same car. I saw the Smithsonian car on display some years ago when it was on tour. The museum personnel would only touch it wearing white gloves like it was a Renaissance art work. It’s a stunning car to see in person, pictures do not do it justice. Much thanks for this video.

I also think that they'd be losing a lot of $$$ on that exotic engine. High temp metals had to be used, Chrysler IS an engineering company. It was and still IS a elegant car that looks like it's moving while parked. Yes! It's also my "bucket list" to see Jay's Garage. This car + Stanley Steamer would what I'd LOVE to ride in. At least you got close to one. I finally got to sit in a DeLorean @ Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. The Astronaut Corvette was locked though.

The whereabouts of the 9 surviving Chrysler Ghia Turbine cars - 991211 - St Louis Museum of Transportation 991225 - Detroit Historical Museum - displayed at the Gilmore Museum at Hickory Corners, MI 991230 - Chrysler Corporation 991231 - Owned by the late Frank Kleptz 991234 - Henry Ford Museum 991242 - Jay Leno - former Chrysler Corp car 991244 - Los Angeles Natural History Museum - was on display at the Petersen Museum earlier 991245 - Smithsonian 991247 - Chrysler Corporation Someone at Chrysler missed up when they sent the display motor to St Louis. St Louis Museum of Transportation did not put it on display for years. When they did decide to display the display motor, most of the parts they needed to make a running motor were there. That car has run since the mid 1980s. When this car goes to shows, it is driven from the trailer to it's display spot, & back to the trailer at the end of the show. If you can go to St Louis Easter Sunday, they take it to the Forest Park Easter show every year. They start it & run it for 5 minutes every hour on the hour. It sounds like an old vacuum cleaner to me. The exhaust is pretty warm, but not hot. The reason St Louis ended up with one is in the 1960s, the St Louis Museum of Transportation was affiliated with the Smithsonian.

Thanks for the correction =) it’s crazy Leno has the only one on the West Coast most of them are still in Michigan with one being in Missouri and then another one in Washington DC at the Smithsonian.. I’ve been to the smithsonian but I don’t remember seeing a turbine car there or a Tucker they have both of those cars but the Smithsonian is amazing what’s even better is everything Washington DC is free no cost nothing to go to any of the museums even the zoo.. but I would suggest taking the train into DC or taking a bus and leaving your car elsewhere because otherwise you’ll be feeding the meter the whole day it only takes two hours that’s max time to park somewhere before you have to pay it again unless they changed it it’s been probably seven years since I’ve been to DC.It’s clear on the other side of the state for me it’s beautiful out there though
