"It makes me happy, and it makes me a better person." I'm not religious, but that's it right there. And I agree that everyone has some kind of "religion" in their life, whether it's politics, sports, music, or whatever. If it inspires you you be a better person, go for it. When it inspires you to tell other people how to live, that's when we get into trouble. I also like your comparison of prayer and meditation. Great reaction; you have such a positive vibe. Whatever your beliefs are, they're clearly working for you = )

@Kaje Nitram Not sure I follow. As people use terms differently: How do you differentiate between religion and faith? And what does the golden rule have to do with faith? Thanks in advance for clarifying.
@BeOtterMyFriend
@BeOtterMyFriend 3 года назад
Hey Spencer, I get your point about happiness. I would have two questions I'd be interested in your personal opinion about: 1. What definition do you use for religion? You are using quotation marks so it seems you differentiate between people saying that music is their "religion" an actual/real religion. Is that a fair assessment? 2. How important is truth to you? Things could make you happy without being true. Should people believe in tuings that make them happy even if they aren't true? Or more personally: Would you rather believe in an inconvenient truth or a convenient falsehood (looking for a neutral term there. Lie, fantasy, delusion and so on all contain a judgement. Hope 'falsehood' comes across as neutral enough.) Cheers!

@@BeOtterMyFriend 1. I think that's fair. I couldn't think of a good way to phrase it, but yeah, I was thinking of 'regular' religions - Christian, Muslim, Jew, Sikh, Hindu, whatever - vs. other things people can get really passionate about. Like politics. "My parents were ___, and I'm ___, and that's just the way it is!" Or music. "You think Offspring were better than Greenday!? I WILL MURDER YOUR FAMILY!!" That's when I start thinking, 'chill out, and let people like what they like.' 2. I'm a big fan of truth. But there are a lot of things that can't be proved or disproved, like God. But like I said, what does it matter to you? Hell, I like to talk to trees. Sit in a forest and have imaginary conversations with trees. "Hey, buddy, I've been here for 200 years; I've seen it all; you're going to be okay," whatever. I don't actually think trees are talking to me. It's a form of meditation (or prayer, if you like,) that makes me feel better and want the be a better person. Is it "true?" Depends on what you mean by that, but it helps me, and doesn't hurt anyone else, so I see it as a good thing.

"It makes me happy." If you are aware of the history of religion then you know that it has caused a great deal of harm. You also know that the question of believing in a god is about faith instead of verification, meaning it's not about actually finding a god. Now if it makes you feel good that's great but that is always tempered by the knowledge that it causes a lot of harm to a lot of innocent people at the same time. One person's pleasure might be someone else's prison. A lot of this should come down to consideration for others. Just saying.

As for your last comment: No, that's exactly what I came here for. There are loads of reactions to material on religion out there and the reactors may laugh or not, but almost all of them don't give their opinions on the points. You may see they are angry because they give those looks to the camera and then say things like "well, don't get me started", but you don't get to know what they actually think about the points made. Many even clearly state they won't say anything about the matter because it's considered a controversial subject and they don't want to get in trouble. But what's the point in that? It's your channel, if I want to hear people laugh while watching Carlin, I can watch the original video. Especially with Carlin and other comedians who are very intelligent in their oration and who talk about intellectually interesting things more than the classic "did that ever happen to you?" observational comedy (nothing wrong with that) I want to have a reaction to the point made as well as the punchline delivered.

Carlin was more of an orator than a comedian in my opinion. Some of his later specials are more like speeches. There is an agenda that isn’t laughter.. Brilliant bit anyway, but you said it yourself “good argument”. Not just popcorn comedy, but a good mix of philosophy and cynicism or “silly putty and napalm”. I’ve watched all of his specials, but very few twice. Classic but archaic. Maybe this was funnier back in the olden times, but controversy is fleeting and you can only watch someone kick an ant hill so many times before you get bored. Have you read Leviticus 23? Lol

I find your comments thoughtful and interesting. I have to say that I'm with George. I was raised in a very religious family, my mom anyway, with generations of pastors in the past. I was a believer for more than 50 years and got a great deal of inspiration and comfort from my belief, especially when people I loved died. My dad was a scientist and an atheist, but thought a religious education was good, and we could make up our own minds as adults. He was calm, rational and reasonable and I felt loved and valued by both parents. I gradually lost my faith, as many of assertions seemed either ludicrous or designed to control and threaten. I think the fear of death, for ourselves and those we love, is the main reason for religion. I get joy and comfort in my family, and in everyday life, and the natural world. I am happy I escaped the bonds and blinders of religion. Religious people seem to get very angry when you no longer believe.

Besides the state of mind issue is even bigger and more worth discussing in my opinion regardless of the after life. I notice I find myself in this state of hell in my mind when I don't tell the truth seeking to be liked or really just do anything that goes against my conscience in this life, so waking up and trying again to be better and if I in fact do so, I step away from this state of mind and find myself feeling a lot lighter, joyful, loving, etc.

thank u so much for this review ur understanding and agreement and not taking offense is such a breath of fresh air on the subject I was raised Jehovah's Witness but I abandoned it in middle school and now have basically "made up" my own religion based on my personality and feelings it takes a little from just about every religion from Christianity to Buddhism to atheism, to naturalism and just about everything in between so its very well rounded and it evolves with each year as I grow I can see u r a very well rounded as well in your Christianity and don't just instantly get offended by his rationality on it but laugh and understand what he's saying so thank you very much for this review :) 🙏🙇❤👏

I'm an atheist but I respect that you are not as you do not come accross as blindly following church doctrine but have developed your own individual relationship with faith and are respectful of those that don't which I believe deserves then to be respected in turn. I like that you can laugh about George Carlin, which to me proves your faith is coming from an authentic place that is not threatened by what someone else may think, not by right out dismissing it, but by recognizing that you have your faith and it enriches your life. Kudos. If you are interested in more serious religion discussions, you could have a look at people like Christopher Hitchens debates here on youtube. George Carlin has a bit about the ten commandments, which he brings down to 2 ;), and at the end he adds a new one "Keep thy religion to thyself" and to me if a religious person respects me as a non-believer enough to do this, I feel they deserve the same respect returned, for whatever meaning we find or wherever we find it, it is something to treasure.

Cool to see how a thoughtful religious guy can actually agree with a lot of what Atheists say. Often you'll see agreement about criticism of the Church's behaviour (as how could you not?) But more interesting is when we both criticize the theology. The Church's picture of God is under assault from all sides.

I used to be Catholic for decades. Although I no longer believe, I wont bash others who have a loving faith. Like, my brother is a deacon at his church; I'd describe it as Modern Evangelical. My brother's faith is beautiful and honorable. He walks the talk sharing love and kindness. Out of 6 siblings, he and I are basically the same person; Born with feral empathy. He has his style, I have mine; the message is the same.

Religion has always been a topic that i don't talk about. George does a good job explaining the humor in almost anything. I appreaciete that you took the time to listen to someone who has views that differ. If i remeember right, He told us in one his specials: " I was catholic until i reached the age of reason." He was a brilliant, intelligent and just down right funny gentleman. Enjoyed your videos.

If you're not religious you don't substitute it with anything. My parents taught me right and wrong, they weren't religious AT ALL. I don't need some threat hanging over me to be a good person. I went to Christian schools but soon nothing in religion made sense to me so, yeah, no. :)

As a fan of Carlin and a non religious God believer I appreciate your open mindedness about others points of view. What I believe in is my experience of that which seems beyond me and the evolution of the human spirit. But I see all the hypocrisy in religious power structures like Carlin does. True spirituality is about seeking a personal connection to whatever I feel God is at the time. My idea of God and reality can change at any point if I'm presented with a new experience. Like Bruce Lee once said. "Be like water."

What do you substitute for religion? What do you substitute for cancer when the doctor cures it? Faith is the excuse people give when they don't have a good reason to believe in something, because if you had a good reason, you'd offer that rather than "faith" as justification for belief.

Won't fight you there. My faith could just be belief bias, yep. But again, it makes me feel better and works for me, but is the reason why I would never try to force my belief on others. Because I've never heard a good reason to not believe in God, I guess I then continue down this path and we'll see if I ever see or find evidence to suggest no longer believing. Thanks for sharing! Again, I don't disagree with you. I hope you're well!

As far as I see it, everyone who want's to believe in whatever or whomever they want to believe in, or not believe in. Has every right to do just that. The only time I have a problem with what others believe in is when they are trying to force it on someone else, or is causing harm to someone or something else. Outside of that believe in whatever or whomever you want/need to to feel how you want to. It's good to have some kind of a belief, even if you dont follow any organized religion.

Back when I was still a believer, I kind of had an epiphany on the clothing thing. I basically came to the conclusion that I was there for god, not to look pretty, so there was no need for me to bother agonizing on what to wear to church, nor did I need to wear a skirt. From then on, I'd arrive to church wearing whatever I wanted. Which was usually some form of comfy clothes, often jeans and a random shirt. I stood out like a sore thumb, but nobody seemed overly bothered, and I was more comfortable. Win-win.

George had a fantastic way of making this point without really offending anyone. I share his views 100% with most things but its important to let people have faith, especially like you said, if it makes you a better person. Totally fair. @SebsDuran
@SebsDuran 3 года назад
Good question. And you know, I don't think you actually do... Meaning is perhaps the better term. If we find meaning and it makes us better ourselves and serve others, I think that is just fine. But to each their won. Thanks for the question. But it does seem like religious tendencies are part of being a human being. If we do not create religions, we make something our religion, for example a government can become a religion to someone. So maybe knowing that tendency can allow us to just keep centering ourselves back to our meaning and purpose instead.

I am a firm believer that all beliefs hold some truth and we are drawn to it in the way that fits for us. Maybe it's a higher power, maybe its energy maybe it isn't, but most of us are wired to belive in something greater then ourselves and to strive for an ideal. I am pagan and my Grandfather was a Methodist Reverend we had so many theological discussions over the years. There were so many basic beliefs we shared but how we got there was different. I like George Carlin because he was a thinker and even though he presented his ideas in a humorous form they still get having a conversation.

As an atheist, I feel like your explanation for your belief in God is the only valid and acceptable explanation. It is absolutely fine to believe in whatever you want as long as you aren't pushing it on me, and that includes the voting box. If you believe what you want because it makes you feel good, even though you know it's a bit nonsensical, that's fine. That's great. Do what makes you happy. It's the point at which popular beliefs begin to hurt others that I have a problem. Your outlook is very healthy and self aware. I wish more Christians were like you.

Oh, so it's ok for you to be rude and dismissive but then say ''hey, if more Christian were like you...'' How about this? I wish non-believers were nothing like you. Calling other people's dearly-held beliefs nonsensical proves you're not communicating in good fath and you should be ashamed. And the gall of you to say that people somehow know, deep down, that their beliefs are nonsensical. Get lost.
