Church of the Annunciation in Finglas West is one of the biggest churches in Dublin. It was designed by David Keane (David Keane & Partners, later KMD Architecture) in 1967. A massive building with a capacity of 3500 people . Large scale structure with impressive concrete roof. Stephen Walsh designed beautiful, abstract stained glass windows including a huge window above the main entrance.
I've been meaning to do a video of the chruch for some time and keep putting it off, Aldo I knew it was due for demolition, it just seemed like it was always there and always would be, however it's time has come and it is to be replaced with a new smaller chruch.
there will be mother's passing some day saying "that's where your father and I where married,well not that chruch,the older one,"
so this video will be there for anyone who looks it up along with others people took the time to make.
it's been part of people's life's and part of the sky line for so long,so many christening, communion and confirmation, weddings and people saying goodbye to their loved ones, now it's time has come.
the original video I did was September,this video was done on the 24/10/2021.
I feel it won't be long until it is gone. seen the alter there I thought it would have been good if they saved it, could have used it in the new church or put it on the grounds as a testaments to the old church,but sadly not.

Shocking the side window panels were not removed as well. Stained glass is a valuable asset and panels should sell well at an auction. Surprised too the alter slab is left there too!
@elainenolan4715
@elainenolan4715 2 года назад
I read that the side panel windows are not true stained glass, rather it was coloured glass to match the main window, don't know if that's true but I did read that. Don't know why more of the interior wasn't salvaged, like the altar. Could simply be that it's too large but will be recycled. The church was deconsecrated so the items are no longer considered holy.

@@elainenolan4715 I'd love the two pieces of greenish marble though. Pity I couldn't have dropped over and knabbed them.

I heard as well that it was painted glass. AFAIK the main window at the entrance was taken away and saved

Thank you very much Jim. I really wanted to capture it before it went. I would have liked of they saved the alter for the new church or put it on the grounds of the new church to remember what once was. Won't be long and it will be all gone

Brilliant video - the music is perfect as well. It's a shame about the church - they should at least recycle the windits eh?! I'm sure the community paid a lot of money for those.

So sad to see but unfortunately it’s a sign of the times many people have lost interest in faith brought on by the church themselves don’t know if it’s a good thing or bad thing with people giving up on spirituality

nonsense to remove a church
@elainenolan4715
@elainenolan4715 2 года назад
Unfortunately the condition of the roof coupled with the design of the roof meant it was cheaper to knock and rebuild than to repair. Plus it was too expensive to heat and no longer had a big enough congregation for a church of this size. It's sad to see it go though.
@stuartwilliams4898
@stuartwilliams4898 2 года назад
Just as Elaine said. The reinforced cast concrete roof was becoming unstable. A lot of people complained too how cold that church could be, despite the heating being on. Also, the demolished church had a capacity for 3,500 and its replacement a capacity for only 350....says a lot, don't it!

@@stuartwilliams4898 its cavornous and modern but more ornamental then many so called post modern churches I have seen, at sad site when even catholic ireland has many that have lost the faith or practice of it though deep down there are still many that have the seed of hope and the faith only waiting for it to be rekindled, keep the faith and practice the faith for it was said when the world comes to end God was said to grant St Patrick his wish to judge Ireland erin go bragh

Better view of the Dublin mountains now. Just to mention, an English steeplejack fell to his death when this monstrosity was being built. What a waste of life.
