Churchill Must Go | The Crown (Claire Foy, Greg Wise) 

Well, he wasn't exactly wrong about Churchill at this point in time. Churchill was indeed on a decline because while he was still respected and loved, he was falling behind on the times. He loved Britian as an Empire, but by his second Prime premiership everything had changed in ways he had a hard time grasping. He was after all a conservative of the Victorian era. However...that all being said Mountbatten already lost the right to call himself anything because he dared say "House Windsor is gone" in earshot of one of the Founders of House Windsor: Queen Mary. Her final act as a Monarch was to put him in his place, and that's where he stayed. Oh sure, he tried to find workarounds, but they always fell short. Elizabeth was loyal to her grandma, the Queen Mom was a Windsor through and though, Philip was pushed aside, and Charles was too young. And the common people just didn't like him enough to be anything but a shield against foreign threats.

Yep, but it's not easy telling someone who is elderly it is time to retire. A lifetime of friends and memories disappearing more and more every day. And it had to have been hard for him to come to terms with what he saw on the horizon. I think when the King died Churchill was forced to see his own end, and from that time forward he fought tooth and nail to stave the inevitable off as long as he could.
