Gday, This video is kinda a vlog were I swap out the single phase 2hp motor to a 3 phase 3hp via a vfd, its not the best of videos but it is what it is, hope you enjoy, Cheers
To do what you do while your going through everything is another level. I hope im not the only one who thinks this… its not just about the videos and quality but more of your drive to keep pushing on no matter what. The videos are a plus. I had a mate go through chemo at 18 but I believe it was his drive to keep doing something that got him through it all.
Gday, Staying active is important but its taking a lot longer to do jobs which is understandable, as the chemo treatments go on the more there knocking me around, only have one more to go thankfully, Appreciate you watching mate, Cheers
I agree. Matty has been pushing through when most people would pull back a bit or go full stop. Personally I'd watch a video of Matty sitting at his table sipping tea doing nothing much at all or BSing with Trevor.
You Matty are truly an inspiration, the message I’m getting is never stop and never give up. I like that, when you are sorted you’ll be in the right place. Kick on!
Hi Matty, nice job mate, much quieter which is a huge bonus as you will know when filming! Do what you enjoy and want to do in any way you want to do it, and don't give a second thought to how it will be perceived!!! Cheers, Jon
3 phase motors versus single phase motors of similar quality are always quieter, and more efficient , induction types. Great job, and great to see up getting stuff done ✔. Thanks for sharing.
Hope you are feeling better soon Matty. Keep positive and take care of yourself. The videos are still welcome and it will be great to see the horizontal milling action in due course.
Interesting project Matty. Worked out well. I'm sure being in the workshop helps to take your mind of health matters. Take your time Matty and pace yourself. It just doesn't matter how long it takes to complete a job. Getting better is all important. Keep happy and positive. Cheers Nobby
Gday Nobby, keeping busy has definitely helped the mind set, it hasn’t been easy that’s for sure but I’m almost at the end now hopefully mate, thanks for watching, cheers
Matty, I think you will like this channel, the gentleman is building a V-8 engine, that will fit in your palm. On machinery he built himself. I'm impressed. Hope you enjoy it as well.
It's good to see you in the shop, Matty. I have a good friend, he's a Vietnam vet, is in his 80s, and has been living with agent orange disease since the war. (I know you're not in your 80s lol, that's not the point) And, I know chemo is different, but I bring it up to tell you what he always says to me. "If you keep moving, you keep living..." He's a lot older than me, and I truly believe he's got it figured out. Having something to get up for, and having the tenacity to get up for it, that's what allows us to push through even the hardest times, and triumph when it seems like the whole deck is stacked against us. Keep moving brother.
Gday, I have tried to stay active everyday but its not easy, doing a video each week has helped and I think Ive only missed one or two since starting chemo, Appreciate you watching, Cheers
Working in tight spaces is bad enough when you are fit and well, so kudos to you Matty. Real shame you couldn't get 2 belts on, but it seems happy with one. Seeing your Mack Trucks emblem on the wall, reminds me of the time I went to their factory in Hagerstown, that place is huge. Anyway, hope your feeling better, regards to you and family, take care 👍
Gday, I might re-visit the pulley at some stage and possibly make a new one to run 2 belts, That would of been fantastic going through the Mack factory, Cheers
@@MattysWorkshop I was there to help with a small gear with a profile tolerance of 0.0003", really tight, but we did it, just. The main shop was that big that they used bicycles to get around.
Chemo has come a long way, my uncle went through it 25 years ago they got the cancer but ruined his body. He had side effects for 15 years. We got him for another 15 years. Well wishes to you and yours.
Nice upgrade Matty! Those original Cincinnati motor mounts are genius. Plenty of flexibility for different frame sizes and you don't need to drill big holes in tight spaces. Cheers, Preso
Good one Matty. I added WEG branded VRD's to both my lathe and mill in 2006. Both are running 3hp motors and I have had no issues or regrets. Was able to set up the mill with an emergency stop, foward/stop/reverse switch and variable speed control using a variable resister in the original switch box mounted to the front of the machine and I recommend you look into adding this too if possible. Variable speed is a blessing.
Those WEG motors and VFD's are really quite good for the money, or were when I was putting them in 15 years ago. Last time I looked they seemed to be quite a bit more expensive, now they have their feet under the table.
I'm astonished that you are managing to keep going on so well Matty, with everything else that's going on, more power to you mate. I mean getting that new motor in on on your own, that would have taken me a couple of days and there's not a lot wrong with me at the moment. Anyway all the bestcand keep up the good work.
Gday, As the treatments go on the worse Im feeling, its important to stay active but that takes its toll to so its a fine line to follow, Jobs that would normally take a day is taking 3, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
Gday, Once I get my head around the vfd ill look at a remote switch setup possibly, its nice being able to vary the rpm's thats for sure, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
That Cincinnati loves the new motor. ❤❤ Your videos are good. No worries. When I had my shop spray foam insulated, I couldn’t hear the rain anymore. I have to lookout the window to see if it’s raining. LoL. Get well and rest.
@@MattysWorkshop I hear ya. It's been expensive to build my shop and that was the first thing I decided to do. It freezes here in the winter and the freeze will destroy the motors in the machines and other tools. So, I had to keep the shop above freezing in winter and if I didn't insulate, it would be a huge utility bill each month. I'm glad I did and it was the only thing I've had to have done by someone else in my shop. Everything I've done on my own.
The fact that you now basically have a throttle and transmission, as well as reverse, makes the 3-phase/VFD conversion worth it on its own. Much more flexibility in spindle speeds, which gets you out of tool chatter in more situations.
Gday Everrett, so far the little bit ive done with the mill im super impressed, its much quieter now and having the option of varying the speed is brilliant, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
Hi Matty, I appreciate every video you make, alot of people would have stopped with what you are going through, and I'm sure other will agree, the fact you are still making them makes me us appreciate them even more. Keep fighting mate and you will beat it, but never worry about the quality of what you are putting out, it all good viewing.
My first cheap EBay VFD died. I replaced it with in from Conon Motors and have since added 3ph motors and VFD's to 2 other machines. I've got remote control panels on the most recent 2 which is really handy. VFD's sit close to the motors with a network cable connecting thd remotes to thr VFD's.
Matt, for the heavy grunt work, you've got TWO tough lads to do the lifting. You just do the fine and technical work. Better still, go and put your feet up and give Bec a big cuddle. 😆😂😆
I stuck a 3 phase motor and VFD on my Myford ML7 last year and its completely changed the machine. I did make a remote box up for stop/start, speed and reverse using a potentiometer and a couple of cheap switches, so much easier than reaching up for the VFD controller. Take it easy mate and don't push too much, give yourself time to heal.
Where your vid said "Title goes here" you could have put "Here you go, brothers and sisters! Thanks from Matty". Soldier on, Digger. It's nice hearing rain on the roof, but not torrential stuff. ... Thanks Matty.
You can only do the best you can if people dont like it thats on them. Your contents always been more then just good . Do your best and nothing else matters. I only wish I could get out of my bed and into my shop where I spent forty yrs building things and doing repairs to survive. My spine pain put my down. God bless you
G’day Matty. Nothing wrong with the video mate, showed us everything ya did. Sorry to hear ya knocking up a bit. Just take it easy and keep plodding along (it’s worked for me for the last 8 years). Anyhow, thanks mate and have a good one 👍🇦🇺
I love the sound of rain on a metal roof. It's even better with some thunder. There are RU-vid channels dedicated to it. You might consider recording it. Many people use it to sleep.
Hi Matty. Nice to see you have rain in Oz thought that was only us in Auckland New Zealand. I'm a sparky and love VFD's and 3 phase motors. They run much smoother than single phase ones. Cheers Mike
Good on ya Matty that's how I roll too just get all the bits and then make it work it's the best way sometimes. Don't worry about the video quality you can't help the bad weather just good to see you keep on going.
Well Matty you are doing far better than I did with the treatment. That 3HP motor would pull a train. Each rotation gives 3 pushes to the 1 on single phase. They are so much smoother too. Great video. Catch you on the next one. Steve.
That's a good upgrade Matty, more grunt and variable speed, you can get extension sleeves for the Motor Shaft to move the Pulley out, sorry you're feely crap mate hope you feel better soon.
Great video! Glad you’re able to get out in the shop. Hang in there! Your Flogging rain sounds like what my step-father called a Frog Strangler! When it rains so hard the frogs drown!😁Keep up the good work and Stay Safe.
another excellent video, l don't see any lacking in quality. keep up the good work, your health is more important than anything we are watching, take as long as it take, we'll all be here watching . be well.
The rain…😱 We’ve been getting the leftovers up here in Sydney mate.., but WOW 🤣🤣 That’s genuinely podding down mate ‼️ Anyhoo…. She’s a lot quieter now Matty 👍 That single belt will be ok too I think.. Keep Punchin’ Matty, Regards Robert
Gday Robert, we ended up with over 200mm and it was pissing down, made it hard to do any filming with the noise, I've only ran one belt on the Cincinnati so it should be right until I make a new pulley, well thats the plan mate, Thanks for watching, Cheers
G'day Matty, as fr as I'm concerned a three phase motor controlled by a vfd is a very good way of powering a machine on a single phase supply. Your advantage is that you still have a geared machine, and with the vfd you can fine tune your speeds ,( but not your feeds as they are directly related to spindle speed) and can get the sweet spot where you get a nice finish. I've put brand new three phase motors on both my wood lathe and my metal lathe/ mill combo. My metal lathe has no back gear so low speed turning can be a problem as three phase motors don't have a lot of torque at low rpm's and it's easy to stall one with a moderately heavy cut at less than 50% frequency ( depending on what frequency range you set the vfd up on) mines set up on 25-100Hz. I have a servo driven lead screw, so my feeds are completely independent of the machine unless I'm screw cutting through the change wheels, and then I just slip off the servo belt and work normally. So your set up will work fine, as long as the vfd hold up. If it does fail ( and mine did under warranty, but that's another story lol) then buy a good quality of a known brand and not one out of China. I've had my second vfd now around 20 months with no trouble whereas the chink one lasted barely seven months before it exploded half of one of the boards. You take care mate. If your knackered then rest. You can only do what your body will allow you to do while you're fighting the rust Matty. Take care, Sam from the UK
The 3 phase motor should be a vast improvement over a similar single phase unit. The overlapping 120 degree phases are far smoother power delivery and greater torque than the single phase equivalent. On the matter of controls for forward/reverse and speed you should look into a pendant remote control...far easier to deal with than messing about with the little button/knobs on the actual VFD unit. When you mention being surprised at how little noise comes from the VFD it is probably because it is dialled in to that motor pretty closely. Noisy VFDs usually indicate that the setable parameters haven't been adjusted correctly and that can produce all sorts of weird sounds from heavy buzzing to high pitched whistling sounds. I think you've made the right choice going for a 3 phase VFD drive.
Gday, I did go through the parameters with some guidance from a mate who has done a few vid's, in the near future ill be looking at doing a remote switch setup, appreciate you watching mate, cheers
Nice and. Neat install Matty. I love both of my VFD, and being quieter is a big plus. Boy, if Tecas could only get ,50,mm of rain, we would all be out dancing a jig,🤪. That new motor laughed st the 8mil cut 😁
Matty I have the same VFD on my smaller lathe with a 2 hp 3 phase motor. For very little I put a Toggle switch and a Potentiometer on the lathe remote from the VFD wo I can control the speed of the spindle and also switch FWD to REV. Mine works great. I also have a Fugi Frenic Mini VFD on my 3hp Bridgeport Clone mill and did the same with mounting the remote switches within easy reach..
Please don't over do and over work. It's ok that you take things a little slower. We continue to lift you in prayer for your health and the doctors who are treating you and yes, for you Honey who watches over you. Glad you have a better motor for your lathe.
Hi Matty I find that anything electrical has hidden complexities and always takes a while. Nice conversion on a beefy mill. Feeling poorly ain't no fun. Just need to get through it..... Cheers
Matty, Every day that you wake up without a toe tag is a good day. Do what you can do but realize that pushing the envelope is no longer advisable. If you get 15 minutes work done, that maybe it. You get very frustrated. Boy, do I know that one. You never feel that great and sometimes you feel just horrible. Know that one too. The quality of your work is not up to what you want. I've made it a lot longer than I was supposed to. So, you just do the best you can and it will just have to be good enough.
Gday, a the moment I get get roughly half a day in then its time for a nap, its extremely frustrating and theres nothing I can do about it mate, appreciate you watching, Cheers
@@MattysWorkshop Matty, I get maybe two hours a day every other day. I totally understand frustrating. Just have to make the time you have count, Never give up.
G'day Matty. Holy hectapascals batman, that's a big arse motor that you installed on that mill. Good work on getting that VFD up and running. I've never done one before, but I know they can be a head faaaark to set up lol. Cheers mate, Aaron.
Gday Aaron, it should have enough grunt now to handle anything I throw at it, the vid takes some nutting out ill give ya the tip, Thanks for watching, mate, Cheers
Glad you got rid of that noisy power hungry inefficient split phase motor. I converted my 2 lathes, mill, drill press and even my compressor to 3 phase via VFD's. Vastly more economical to run and smooth and quiet with the added benefit of variable speed, not for the compressor of course.
I've just picked up an Old South Bend 10L lathe with an under the headstock drive. I only have to upgrade the motor wiring and I have no idea how I'm going to get myself into the motor bay. The doors aren't all that big and nothing seems to be positioned for convenience of service. Like you, I'll manage but it wont be pretty. I suspect the swear jar will get topped off by the end of the job.
G'day Matty. We Sue & I await each and every video, found nothing wrong with last nights video at all other than it was not long enough. Still that Matty superior quality, as others have said many of us would have and do duck for cover at far lesser things. We all understand if you need to R&R I'm no different and atm it's the humidity/heat knocking me about but slowly does it. As for that new motor why not turn up and extension shaft to suit length and current pulleys?? Should give you something to do LOL, other than brag about those beaut old machines.
Gday, it hasn't been easy over the past few months but I thinks its important to stay motivated and active, somedays are harder then others, Im planing on making a complete new pulley at this stage if all goes to plan, Thanks for watching mate,. Cheers
Fuck about Matty! Great job buddy, and as already mentioned, you're a star, going through that shit and keeping on with these jobs, is I'm guessing a blessing some days and a curse others If you're enjoying it do it, if not fuck it off 😂 Best wishes to you my mate
Gday Ralfy, it hasn't been easy thats for sure, somedays I can't stand the sight of the place because I feel like complete shit, I think its important to stay active and motivated, i'm finally off the bloody tablet to, you know which one mate, Cheers
Hopefully with a little work you can get more belts on it so you can take heavy cuts and let the old girl eat some metal. Of course you might dim the lights in Eden when you do it. 😀
G'day mat, yes, I've had radiation, kemo and amunotheropie, I am two years in with lung and brain cancer. It knocked me about badly, but now I'm stable, scans every three months. Fxxk cancer, stay strong, I'm here. Hooroo mate se ya later 👍
