Hey Dudes, Blackmagic design is on the precipice of launching a brand new Ursa Mini Pro G2 cinema camera.
If not in the next week, most certainly in the coming months. Im hoping that the G2 version of the Ursa Mini Pro (UMPG212k) will be announced at Cine Gears 2022.
The big question is really the design / form factor that BMD will go with. Will they stick with the same body design since 2015, or do a major overhaul.
Its clear that a lot of people want a cube or box styled camera and it would be logical for BMD to use their best sensor in it. That being the 12k URSA MINI Pro sensor design.
But its the recent announcement of 12k complaint CFexpress cards from Angelbird and Exascend that I believe to be the biggest sign of a new digital cinema release from Blackmagic design.
As the Ursa mini Pro 12k is the only 12k cinema camera on the market, could the release of these cards be the tell tale sign of what is coming?
Well lets discuss it.....
Affectionate known as the UMP12k, The Ursa Min Pro 12k G2 will be the best cinema camera that Blackmagic design will have released to date.
What will Blackmagic design's next cinema camera release be. We think history shows us that the Ursa Mini Pro 12k will be upgraded to a G2 (second generation version) and the pocket 4k will be upgraded with the 4.6k sensor and the 6k pro body.
The pocket 4.6K pro would then be in line with the pocket 6k pro with built electronic ND filters, longer battery life, tilt screen, removable EVF and will receive a media card upgrade to CFexpress cards.
We see the 12k G2 also adopting the electronic ND filters from the pocket 6k Pro, while also receiving a CFexpress media card upgrade.
The media card upgrade alone would breathe a huge amount of life into the ageing body design. And would give the Ursa Mini Pro 12k Pro g2 to possibly shoot at 300 fps in 4k. Possibly higher. Or shoot in less compressed formats at say a 16 bit depth.
Anyway this is a fun video for BMD cinema camera fanboys like.

Some articles I’ve read has intrigued me about BMD’s custom sensor. I’m curious what’s the next camera of theirs to receive their own sensor, built for the 12K. I won’t be surprised if the G2 gets updated with the new sensor.
@cinechimp

@@DANAMIONLINE Yes I too think that the BMD custom sensor is going to become their default sensor in their cinema cameras. I mean why wouldnt they? Blackmagic Design would have spent a lot of money engineering that sensor, so it wont be tossed aside.

That's a long shot, but... the later release of the 4.6k Alexa35 w 17 stops DR due to the DGO sensor made me wonder: What about if BM was awaiting this and not the NAB 22 nor Canon's new camera? They would be entering a whole new niche w a Ursa 4.6k G3 w DGO sensor and C2C allready built in. One step closer to the industry standard. That's my wishfull thinking...

I personally really love the design of the mini pro. It’s ergonomically fantastic. The DSLR design of video cameras needs to stop! They’re totally uncomfortable to use once rigged. Which literally defeats their selling point, their lightness. Keep the design the same, add higher frame rates. Add another 2 drops of DR. Add 16 bit Raw. And add Prores!!! Improve the quality of the dials!!!! And of course EXPRESS TYPE B implementation. I’ll be an early investor again. I’ve been totally happy with my URSA 12K.
@cinechimp
@cinechimp 2 года назад
Brother I couldn't agree more. The Ursa Mini Pro Design is fantastic for shoulder mounting. I think we can all agree that more Dynamic Range on any camera is a welcome addition. And yes the DSLR rigging situation is a nightmare. I big gripe with it is all the cameras are designed with the I/O ports on the operators side. So when you shoulder mount the camera the cables are all up in your face. There is a reason why cameras are designed the way they are....right?

@@cinechimp absolutely! I’ve recently just bought myself the Canon XF605. I can’t begin to tell you how well it has been designed! The specs are fantastic. And if being honest, 99% of my customers wouldn’t even notice the difference in quality. @@cinechimp I bought the 6K Pro as well, in fact two of them. I ended up returning the one and selling the other. The 12K definitely has a more filmic substance to it. The pockets are nice cameras and have their place. But the 605 is just such a beast. The auto focus, stabiliser and reach of the zoom are just ridiculously handy. If I hadn’t just invested In the m1 Ultra, I’d pick up another 605 to run them in tandem. The buttons make the camera seem daunting, but literally after 2 days I find myself flying with it. BM needs to shrink not only their name but their pocket cameras too, make them the same size as Sony a7. now they are going the oposite route than the rest of the industry pretty soon they gonna have one body for all their cameras (pocket ursa) Blackmagic Indy 6K - 8k (pocket) and Ursa Cine G3 BlackMagic Cine Pro 12k

Oh I totally agree about the naming schemes. The Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro G2, Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 12k, the blackmagic design pocket cinema camera 6k pro....who comes up with this stuff right? But you could very well be right. BMD does lean right into that Apple playbook of design of long revision times and recycling of parts. And that does seem to be the way the tech world is going. Maybe this is being driven by component shortages and companies want more out of their bottom lines....

The current form factor is fine but... #1-get it on the Netflix list. What does it need? More DR? 444? WTF? Autofocus "option" would be nice to compete with the Sonys and Canons. I have 10k burning a hole thru my pocket and I own 2 p6K's. Don't make me get a Komodo.

Great question. If we remove the cost, amazing digital cinema camera. I would be interested to side by side the Arri 35 vs the red Vraptor to compare and contrast both companies claims to 17 stops or DR. Im a bit skeptical of Red's claim, but Im sure the Arri claim is understated. Theres a lot of things to love, which aren't worth discussing, because when it ships it will be the best cinema camera on the market and the new standard that other companies, like Sony & BMD will chase. But Im not sure I like the design language, that side screen looks very cheap for a 70K camera. Like something from a 1980s gameboy. Strategy wise, I like they removed all the additional option fees, but dont like the modules. Audio should never be an add on module. I dont like admitting this a DP, audio is important.
@elvisripley
@elvisripley Год назад
Just started thinking about getting a couple 12k cameras and media was one of the main things that seem out of date. The ssd reader seems like a nice choice but that little usb-c connector does not fill me with confidence about surviving a bump. Internal cfexpress type b seems obvious. 2 or even 4 slots. The other was the mount. It would be great to have L mount or something else. Canon doesn’t make EF lenses any more. It’s an old mount. Coming from Sony the lens options aren’t that exciting. L would get back adapters and newly developed lenses. I guess full frame would be awesome too. Or maybe just bigger than s35. I wonder if they could do a sensor that could record 12k but technically be higher resolution in full frame but down scaled in camera. Maybe a 16k sensor that you can only get 12k out of. Seems like most people record 8k or 4k out of the 12k anyway.
@cinechimp
@cinechimp Год назад
You raise some great points Elvis. I will say this BMD will eventual shift to CFexpress type of media. They may be waiting on CFexpress type C which are larger, fast and will offer higher capacities. The trend by companies (apart from Stills camera manufactures) is to sensor stitch two smaller sensors together. It wouldn't surprise me if BMD did this, but it wouldn't also not surprise me if they never went full frame. I say this because even though BMD has great cinema camera like the pocket 4k, pocket6k, 6k pro, Ursa Mini Pro 4.6 and 12k - most of their other equipment is for broadcast or live production, where smaller sensors are the preference. If Blackmagic design could achieve a 16k to super sample a 12k/8k image that would be rather impressive though. In terms of lens mount - it would be nice to see the range of cameras opened up to L or E mount lens options. Then we users would have 6 native options to choose from, which would be awesome.
@elvisripley
@elvisripley Год назад
Cfexpress B has the benefit of being the one normal card right now. That gives it the advantage for Blackmagic over trying to push C and being one of the few to use it. For sensor size it would be a good way to signal they are a cinema camera and not just broadcast+. Maybe just a big s35 like Red does where their sensors are a little extra wide.

Dunno why everyone in this space seems to prefer using cards over hard drives. A Usb-C 3.2/thunderbolt 4 Nvme drive would be so much faster than any CFExpress cards as well as having a far larger storage space capability. BMD is dead to me. Those new switchers are crap. They should have made the ATEM mini pro extreme iso into a rackmount version with XLR inputs. Or update that television studio HD. I do use their PCIe cards though.

I believe a black magic design cameras use a 12-bit analog to digital converter so changing the codec to 16 bit wouldn't be possible without a fairly major hardware redesign. A frame rate boost seems more possible but that's also dependent on the sensor readout speed. That's why the Ursa mini pro G2 was able to record higher frame rates without a change to the recording media. I know the 12K has a good readout speed, but I have no idea what the math would be to figure out the theoretical limit.
@cinechimp

Yes its very intriguing how this stuff all mathematically plays out. And with the new Arri 35 in the mix (I know the price difference is insane) with 17+ stops of dynamic range, I wonder how this is going to affect manufactures like Blackmagic design. Will the Ursa 12k pro be enough even if it is improved moving forward? Lots of questions from the last couple of weeks ....

@@cinechimp I'm hoping black magic takes a page out of Arri's book and focuses on perfecting their color space and tonal curve for 12-bit log. Arri made a pretty big deal about their color space and how their tonal curve helps with the distribution of information for their highlights. I hope other manufacturers follow suit. Arri did have to make the jump to 13-bit for the new camera. But I think black magic taking a similar approach can still do a lot within their 12-bit log
@cinechimp

@@nickxc Thats right 13 BIT from a 18 Bit source. Imagine if they had stay with 18 bit 4.6k and piped that into ARRI RAW. The files would have been ginormous. As yes I also hope BMD follows ARRIs chase of better pixels and more dynamic range over resolution like red.
@nickxc
@nickxc 2 года назад
@@cinechimp holy crap! I missed the bit about the 18 bit source. Goes to show just how much data can fit in log over linear. I'm hoping the same. The Ursa 12K is a very good camera but not really what a lot of us are looking for. It wasn't much of an image upgrade outside of resolution and the loss of prores is painful. Thanks for all the great content and being so responsive!
@cinechimp
@cinechimp 2 года назад
@@nickxc Oh thanks brother, thats nice of you to say. Yeah that 18bit linear source in the new ARRI 35, will be what is providing the extra dynamic range. But even with the ARRI, I wish we got the 18 bit linear to make the create decision with later. You know what I mean?

I need a small box form factor B cam that has an updated sensor over the pockets, to match my Ursa 12k. It would come in handy to put on lightweight gimbals. BMD needs to stop playing around. Full frame would be nice too. lol

@@cinechimp I'm not interested in older sensors so I would want a newer sensor, that's the biggest thing for me. I don't like to purchase old Tech. So if they put a 12k sensor in a smaller body, i would purchase it immediately; because that would be the sidekick camera that I am looking for.

@@SaintProductions1 Fair point. Im just wondering after seeing how much cooling makes up the new Alexa 35, if BMD could even get the Ursa Mini Pro sensor to run cooler in a smaller than URSA body. Interesting

@@SaintProductions1 I hear you. Fingers crossed that BMD design keeps delivering awesome cameras like the UMP, so eventually they will make a camera equal to an alexa without the 70K price tag.

The new Alexa 35 puts tons of pressure on everyone to improve their sensor capabilities. I’m curious to see how much more DR the RGBW sensor design can accommodate and 12k onto a single card would of course simplify the high res workflow for effects plates and such. And who doesn’t want a box design as an alternative for compact rigging? It will be interesting to watch.

Man you are spot on about the Arri 35 shaking up the market. And, yes it is going to be super interesting to watch and see what happens. What it does mean is now is a good time to sell off any cameras and still get a good return before they obsolete.

Hey you may be right about that. I gather you are thinking something like what Kinefinity has done with their new kinemags? That would actually follow BMD M.O for keeping things cheap and easily accessible. And make a l ot of sense for a more expensive camera in their range, like the Ursa 12k G2
